Toxicity assessment of polyethylene microplastics in combination with a mix of emerging pollutants on Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles显示文摘Studies in recent years have shown that aquatic pollution by microplastics(MPs)can be considered to pose additional stress to amphibian populations. However, our knowledge of how MPs affect amphibians is very rudimentary, and even more limited is our understanding of their effects in combination with other emerging pollutants. Thus,we aimed to evaluate the possible toxicity of polyethylene MPs(PE-MPs)(alone or in combination with a mix of pollutants)on the health of Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles. After 30 days of exposure, multiple biomarkers were measured, including morphological, biometric, and developmental indices, behavioral parameters, mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, antioxidant and cholinesterase responses,as well as the uptake and accumulation of PE-MPs in animals.Based on the results, there was no significant change in any of the parameters measured in tadpoles exposed to treatments, but induced stress was observed in tadpoles exposed to PE-MPs combined with themixture of pollutants, reflecting significant changes in physiological and biochemical responses.Through principal component analysis(PCA)and integrated biomarker response(IBR)assessment, effects induced by pollutants in each test group were distinguished, confirming that the exposure of P.cuvieri tadpoles to the PE-MPs in combination with a mix of emerging pollutants induces an enhanced stress response, although the uptake and accumulation of PE-MPs in these animalswas reduced. Thus, our study provides newinsight into the danger to amphibians of MPs coexisting with other pollutants in aquatic environments.Amanda Pereira da Costa Araújo Thiarlen Marinho da Luz Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed Mir Mohammad Ali Md.Mostafizur Rahman Bojan Nataraj Daniela de Melo e Silva DamiàBarceló Guilherme Malafaia 2023Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,5:2

The TNFα/TNFR2 axis mediates natural killer cell proliferation by promoting aerobic glycolysis显示文摘Natural killer(NK)cells are predominant innate lymphocytes that initiate the early immune response during infection.NK cells undergo a metabolic switch to fuel augmented proliferation and activation following infection.Tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNFα)is a well-known inflammatory cytokine that enhances NK cell function;however, the mechanism underlying NK cell proliferation in response to TNFαis not well established. Here,we demonstrated that upon infection/inflammation,NK cells upregulate the expression of TNF receptor 2(TNFR2),which is associated with increased proliferation, metabolic activity, and effector function.Notably,IL-18 can induce TNFR2 expression in NK cells, augmenting their sensitivity toward TNFα.Mechanistically,TNFα-TNFR2 signaling upregulates the expression of CD25(IL-2Rα)and nutrient transporters in NK cells, leading to a metabolic switch toward aerobic glycolysis.Transcriptomic analysis revealed significantly reduced expression levels of genes involved in cellular metabolism and proliferation in NK cells from TNFR2 KO mice.Accordingly, our data affirmed that genetic ablation of TNFR2 curtails CD25 upregulation and TNFα-induced glycolysis, leading to impaired NK cell proliferation and antiviral function during MCMV infection in vivo.Collectively, our results delineate the crucial role of the TNFα-TNFR2 axis in NK cell proliferation, glycolysis, and effector function.Abrar Ul Haq Khan Alaa Kassim Ali Bryan Marr Donghyeon Jo Simin Ahmadvand Claire Fong-McMaster Saeedah Musaed Almutairi Lisheng Wang Subash Sad Mary-Ellen Harper Seung-Hwan Lee 2023Cellular & Molecular Immunology2023,20,10:0
Properties of Chemically Synthesized Nano-geopolymer Cement based Self-Compacting Geopolymer Concrete(SCGC)显示文摘The physical and mechanical properties of self-compacting geopolymer concrete(SCGC) using chemically synthesized nano-geopolymer cement was investigated. Nano-geopolymer cement was synthesized using nano-silica, alkali activator, and sodium aluminate in the laboratory. Subsequently, nine nanogeopolymer cement sbased SCGC mixes with varying nano-geopolymer cement content, alkali activator content, coarse aggregate(CA) content, and curing temperature were produced. The workability-related fresh properties were assessed through slump flow diameter and slump flow rate measurements. Mechanical performances were evaluated through compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity measurements. In addition, rapid chloride penetration test, water absorption, and porosity tests were also performed. It was assessed that all mix design parameters influenced the fresh and hardened properties of SCGC mixes. Based on test results, it was deduced that nano-geopolymer cement SCGC performed fairly well. All the SCGC mixes achieved the 28-day compressive strength in the range of 60-80 MPa. Additionally, all mixes attained 60% of their 28-day strength during the first three days of elevated temperature curing. FTIR and SEM analyses were performed to evaluate the degree of polymerization and the microstructure respectively for SCGC mixes.Muhammad Ali Sikandar Byung Wan Jo Zafar Baloch Muhammad Asad Khan 2019Journal of Wuhan University of Technology(Materials Science)2019,34,1:0
Feasibility and physics potential of detecting ^(8)B solar neutrinos at JUNO显示文摘The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory(JUNO)features a 20 kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent location for^8B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, high energy resolution compared with water Cherenkov detectors, and much larger target mass compared with previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper,we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting^8B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process.A reduced 2 MeV threshold for the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable, assuming that the intrinsic radioactive background^(238)U and^(232)Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10^(-17)g/g.With ten years of data acquisition, approximately 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the inconsistency between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework.IfDelta m^(2)_(21)=4.8times10^(-5);(7.5times10^(-5))eV^(2),JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at approximately the 3sigma(2sigma)level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moreover,JUNO can simultaneously measureDelta m^2_(21)using^8B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20% or better, depending on the central value, and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos.A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help understand the current mild inconsistency between the value of Delta m^2_(21)reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.Angel Abusleme Thomas Adam Shakeel Ahmad Sebastiano Aiello Muhammad Akram Nawab Ali Fengpeng An Guangpeng An Qi An Giuseppe Andronico Nikolay Anfimov Vito Antonelli Tatiana Antoshkina Burin 19Prevalence of influenza vaccination coverage amongst the first and third generation Asian adults in California, United States of America显示文摘The Asian population comprises the third largest ethnic minority in the state of California. However, influenza vaccination coverage amongst the overall Asian population, and the first and third-generation Asian’s have not been widely studied.Previous literature exploring generational status as a corelate of influenza immunization amongst Mexican identified Latino adults confirms disparities in influenza vaccination coverage by generation. This study aims to report on the prevalence of influenza vaccination coverage amongst the overall, first and third-generation Asians in California, and examine the correlates of influenza vaccination coverage in the aforementioned population.Methods:Cross-sectional data from the California Health Interview Survey 2016 for Asian adults was analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0 for Mac.Descriptive statistics were utilized for reporting the frequencies and percentages of the selected variables.Weighted multivariable binary logistic regression was used to obtain adjusted odds ratios(95%confidence interval)and determine independent association between socioeconomic determinants and influenza vaccination coverage amongst the first and third-generation Asians at P<0.05.The analysis was adjusted for“visit to the doctor”and“insurance status”.Results:Thirteen point one percent(n=2,761)of the survey respondents(N=21,055)identified as Asians. The first-generation(n=1,857,67%)comprised the highest proportion of the Asian ethnic group.Influenza vaccination coverage was reported as 61.2%amongst the overall,61.1%amongst the first-generation and 70.9%amongst the third-generation respectively. All predictor variables were significant amongst the first-generation,however amongst the third-generation all variables except for location and living in a household of 3 and more, were significant predictors of influenza vaccination coverage. Conclusion:Compared to the other ethnic groups in California, the Asian respondents reported a higher percentage of influenza vaccination coverage.Influenza vaccination coverage was the highest amongst the third-generation Asians.Increased influenza vaccination coverage amongst the Asian ethnic group can be ascribed to higher educational attainment,a higher proportion choosing to visit a doctor as well as increased insurance coverage.Rabia Ali Khan Jo Brown Dono Widiatmoko 2021Life Research2021,4,2:0
Tribological properties of hierarchical micro-dimples produced on a cylindrical surface by dual-frequency texturing显示文摘An experimental investigation was performed for investigating the tribological performance of micro-dimple surface texture patterns on a cylindrical surface in a realistic operating environment of starved lubrication. Micro-dimples were generated by a dual-frequency surface texturing method, in which a high-frequency (16.3 kHz) three-dimensional (3D) vibration and a low-frequency (230 Hz) one-dimensional (1D) vibration were applied at the tool tip simultaneously, resulting in the generation of the hierarchical micro-dimples in a single step. Rotating cylinder-on-pin tribological tests were conducted to compare the tribological performance of the non-textured reference specimen and micro-dimple samples. The effect of surface textures generated with various shape parameters (long drop and short drop), dimension parameters (length and surface texture density), and operation parameters (load and sliding velocity) on the tribological performance was evaluated. Stribeck curves indicate that the hierarchical micro-dimples exhibit a lower coefficient of friction than the reference specimen in the high contact-pressure regions. It is also observed that variation in the length of a micro-dimple, the shape effect, is the major factor affecting the friction response of the textured surfaces. The generation of additional hydrodynamic pressure and lift effect by hierarchical structures is the main reason for the improved performance of hierarchical micro-dimple surfaces.Saood ALI Rendi KURNIAWAN Park Gun CHUL Tae Jo KO 2023Friction2023,11,2:0
