A review on promising phytochemical, nutritional and glycemic control studies on Moringa oleifera Lam. in tropical and sub-tropical regions显示文摘Plants have provided sources to find novel compounds. These plants are being used as therapeutic purposes since the birth of mankind. The traditional healers normally utilize medicinal plants as crude drugs while scientists using the folk claim as guides to explore medicinal plants. Moringa oleifera is a famous edible plant having therapeutic and nutritive values. The present study was designed to cumulate the research data regarding to what extent, phytochemical, nutritional and glycemic control studies has been explored using its different extracts. The articles indicated that the powder, aqueous, methanol and ethanol extracts of Moringa oleifera(leaves, pods, seeds, stem and root bark) have significant therapeutic herbal potential to treat diabetes mellitus. Collectively, the mechanism behind is intestinal glucose inhibition, insulin release as well as decrease in insulin resistance probably regeneration of b-cells of pancreas, increase in glutathione and reduction in malondialdehyde. Conclusively, this article give descriptive information about antidiabetic effect, claimed marker compounds and proposed antihyperglycemic mechanism of a single plant. It can be suggested a potential herbal source to treat diabetes mellitus as being widely accepted by major population as nutrition and therapeutic agent. | Hafiz Irfan Muhammad Mohd Zaini Asmawi Nurzalina Abdul Karim Khan | 2016 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,10: | 8
Microwave-assisted solvent extraction of castor oil from castor seeds显示文摘This study was aimed at evaluating the physicochemical properties and oxidation stability of castor oil using microwave-assisted solvent extraction(MAE). MAE was performed using 5% ethanol in hexane as solvent at different extraction times, power intensities and solvent-to-feed(S/F, ml of solvent to gram of feed) ratios. The process parameters were optimized by statistical approach using historical data design of response surface method(RSM). The oils were characterized for yield, physicochemical properties, dielectric properties and oxidation stability, and comparison was also made with oil extracted using Soxhlet method. Results show that the maximum oil yield of 37% was obtained at 20 min with microwave power intensity of 330 W and S/F ratio of 20. The main fatty acid composition of castor oil is ricinoleic acid. The density, refractive index, dielectric properties and oxidation stability of oils are not affected by the extraction methods and extraction parameters of MAE. However, the MAE-extracted oil is more viscous compared to that by Soxhlet method. With extra caution on oil oxidation, MAE could be a promising solvent extraction method with an 86% less in processing time and a higher yield. | Nur Atirah Ibrahim Muhammad Abbas Ahmad Zaini | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,12: | 4
Antioxidants in aqueous extract of Myristica fragrans(Houtt.) suppress mitosis and cyclophosphamide-induced chromosomal aberrations in Allium cepa L.cells显示文摘In this study,freeze-dried water extract from the leaves of Myristica fragrans(Houtt.) was tested for mutagenic and antimutagenic potentials using the Allium cepa assay.Freeze-dried water extract alone and its combination with cyclophosphamide(CP)(50 mg/kg) were separately dissolved in tap water at 500,1000,2000,and 4000 mg/kg.Onions(A.cepa) were suspended in the solutions and controls for 48 h in the dark.Root tips were prepared for microscopic evaluation.2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radicals' scavenging power of the extract was tested using butylated hydroxyanisole(BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT) as standards.Water extract of Myristica fragrans scavenged free radicals better than BHA,but worse than BHT.The extract alone,as well as in combination with CP suppressed cell division, and induced chromosomal aberrations that were insignificantly different from the negative control(P≤0.05).However,cytotoxic and mutagenic actions of CP were considerably suppressed. The observed effects on cell division and chromosomes of A.cepa may be principally connected to the antioxidant properties of the extract. The obtained results suggest mitodepressive and antimutagenic potentials of water extract of the leaves of M.fragrans as desirable properties of a promising anticancer agent. | Akeem AKINBORO Kamaruzaman Bin MOHAMED Mohd Zaini ASMAWI Shaida Fariza SULAIMAN Othman Ahmad SOFIMAN | 2011 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2011,12,11: | 4
Characteristics of fast-growing wood impregnated with nanoparticles显示文摘Falcataria moluccana or sengon is one of the fast-growing wood species widely grown in Indonesia. However, its wood is low quality with low density, and poor strength, durability, and dimensional stability. This study determined the effects of impregnation with monoethylene glycol(MEG)and nano-SiO2 on the characteristics of sengon wood, including its dimensional stability and density.Impregnation with MEG and nano-SiO2 had a significant effects on dimensional stability in terms of the weight percent gain,anti-swelling efficiency, water uptake, bulking effect, and density. The impregnated wood was examined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that MEG and nano-SiO2 were distributed homogeneously into cell walls of wood treated with 0.5%MEGSiO2. | Istie Rahayu Wayan Darmawan Lukmanul Hakim Zaini Esti Prihatini | 2020 | Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,2: | 2

Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Litsea elliptica Blume and Litsea resinosa Blume(Lauraceae)显示文摘Objective:To investigate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of two plant species,Litsea elliptica(L elliptica) and Litsea resinosa(L resinosa). Methods:In vitro method-2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay was conducted for antioxidant activity detennination while antimicrobial assay consisted of agar well diffusion assay and mycelial radial growth assay. Results:Methanol extracts of root and stem of L elliptica and L resinosa exhibited the highest antioxidant activity with EC_(50)of 23.99,41.69,11.22 and 33.48 mg/l.respectively.All methanol extracts of L resinosa as well as root extracts from L elliptica showed significant scavenging activity.Hexane extract from stem of L resinosa presented the largest inhibition zone in Gramnegative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli while chloroform extract from inner bark of L resinosa showed major inhibition towards Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis.Essential oils from the root of both species showed significant antifungal activities which are 80.11%and 66.85%respectively.Conclusions:Overall,methanol extracts from root and stem of both species showed antioxidant activity comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene.Extracts from L resinosa demonstrated stronger antimicrobial properties compared to that from L elliptica. | Mui-Hung Wong Li-Fang Lim Fasihuddin bin Ahmad Zaini bin Assim | 2014 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,5: | 1
