Type 2 diabetes mellitus:From a metabolic disorder to an inflammatory condition显示文摘Diabetes mellitus is increasing at an alarming rate and has become a global challenge.Insulin resistance intarget tissues and a relative deficiency of insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells are the major features of type 2 diabetes(T2D).Chronic low-grade inflammation in T2 D has given an impetus to the field of immuno-metabolism linking inflammation to insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Many factors advocate a causal link between metabolic stress and inflammation.Numerous cellular factors trigger inflammatory signalling cascades, and as a result T2 D is at the moment considered an inflammatory disorder triggered by disordered metabolism.Cellular mechanisms like activation of Tolllike receptors,Endoplasmic Reticulum stress, and inflammasome activation are related to the nutrient excess linking pathogenesis and progression of T2 D with inflammation. This paper aims to systematically review the metabolic profile and role of various inflammatory pathways in T2 D by capturing relevant evidence from various sources. The perspectives include suggestions for the development of therapies involving the shift from metabolic stress to homeostasis that would favour insulin sensitivity and survival of pancreatic β-cells in T2 D. | Iqra Hameed Shariq R Masoodi Shahnaz A Mir Mudasar Nabi Khalid Ghazanfar Bashir A Ganai | 2015 | World Journal of Diabetes2015,6,4: | 36
Anti-mycobacterial screening of five Indian medicinal plants and partial purification of active extracts of Cassia sophera and Urtica dioica显示文摘Objective:To find out the anti-mycobacterial potential of Cassia sophera(C.sophera),Urtica dioica(U.dioica),Momordica dioica,Tribulus terrains and Coccinia indica plants against multidrug resistant(MDR) strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M.tuberculosis).Methods:Plant materials were extracted successively with solvents of increasing polarity.Solvent extracts were screened for anti-mycobacterial activity against fast growing,non-pathogenic mycobacterium strain,Mycobacterium semegmatis,by disk diffusion method. The active extracts were tested against MDR and clinical isolates of M.tuberculosis by absolute concentration and proportion methods. The active extracts were subjected to bio-autoassay on TLC followed by silica column chromatography for isolation of potential drug leads. Results:Hexane extract of U.dioica(HEUD) and methanol extract of C.sophera(MECS) produced inhibition zone of 20 mm in disc diffusion assay and MIC of 250 and 125μg/mL respectively in broth dilution assay against Mycobacterium semegmatis.Semipurified traction F2 from MECS produced 86%inhibition against clinical isolate and 60%inhibition against MDR strain of ilf.tuberculosis.F18 from HEUD produced 81%inhibition against clinical isolate and 60%inhibition against MDR strain of M.tuberculosis.Phytochemical analysis indicated that anti-mycobacterial activity of MECS may be due to presence of alkaloids or flavonoids and that of HEUD due to terpenoids.Condosions:C.sophera and U.dioica plant extracts exhibited promising anti-mycobacterial activity against MDR strain of M.tuberculosis. This is the first report of anti-mycobacterial activity form C.sophera.This study showed possibility of purifying novel anti-mycobacterial compound(s) from C.sophera and U.dioica. | Rambir Singh Shariq Hussain Rajesh Verma Poonam Sharma | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,5: | 4

Percutaneous aspiration and drainage with adjuvant medical therapy for treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts显示文摘AIM:To determine the efficacy and success of percutaneous aspiration irrigation and reaspiration(PAIR) in the management of hepatic hydatidosis.METHODS:Twenty-six patients with 32 hepatic hydatid cysts had PAIR.Twenty-two patients received at least 2 wk of drug therapy before the procedure was carried out to reduce the risk of recurrence from spillage during the procedure. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia with a 19-gauge 20 cm long needle, the cyst was punctured, cystic content(approximately 30 mL) was aspirated by a 12-14 F pigtail catheter and aspirated fluids were sent for analysis.Once the cyst was almost empty,two-thirds of the net amount of material aspirated was replaced by hypertonic saline and left in the cavity for about 30 min, with the catheter left in place for reaspiration of most of the fluid. When the amount of fluid drained was less than 10 mL per 24 h,the drainage catheter was removed.RESULTS:All 32 cysts showed evidence of immediate collapse after completion of the procedure, and before discharge from hospital, ultrasound examination showed fluid reaccumulation in all cysts.Serial follow-up showed a progressive decrease in the size and change in the appearance of cysts. To confirm the sterility of these cystic cavities, seven cysts were reaspirated on average 3 mo after the procedure.Investigations revealed no viable scolices.CONCLUSION:PAIR using hypertonic saline is very effective and safe with proper precautions. | Mohammed I Yasawy Abdelrahman E Mohammed Sammak Bassam Mohammed A Karawi Sohail Shariq | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,5: | 3

Damage response of conventionally reinforced two-way spanning concrete slab under eccentric impacting drop weight loading显示文摘Reinforced concrete(RC)structures are generally designed to carry quasi-static gravity loads through almost indispensable components namely slab, however,it may be subjected to high intense loads induced from the impact of projectiles generated by the tornado, falling construction equipment, and also from accidental explosions during their construction and service lifespan.Impacts due to rock/boulder falls do occur on the structures located especially in hilly areas.Such loadings are not predictable but may cause severe damage to the slab/structure.It stimulates structural engineers and researchers to investigate and understand the dynamic response of RC structures under such impulsive loading. This research work first investigates the performance of 1000×1000×75 mm^(3)conventionally reinforced two-way spanning normal strength concrete slab with only tension reinforcement(0.88%)under the concentric impact load(1035 N)using the finite element method based computer code,ABAQUS/Explicit-v.6.15.The impact load is delivered to the centroid of the slab using a solid-steel cylindroconical impactor(drop weight)with a flat nose of diameter 40 mm,having a total mass of 105 kg released from a fixed height of 2500 mm.Two popular concrete constitutive models in ABAQUS namely;Holmquist-Johnson-Cook(HJC)and Concrete Damage Plasticity(CDP),with strain rate effects as per fib MODEL CODE 2010,are used to model the concrete material behavior to impact loading and to simulate the damage to the slab. The slab response using these two models is analyzed and compared with the impact test results. The strain rate effect on the reinforcing steel bars has been incorporated in the analysis using the Malvar and Crawford(1998)approach.A classical elastoplastic kinematic idealization is considered to model the steel impactor and support system. Results reveal that the HJC model gives a little overestimation of peak displacement, maximum acceleration, and damage of the slab while the predictions given by the CDP model are in reasonable agreement with the experimental test results/observations available in the open literature.Following the validation of the numerical model, analyses have been extended to further investigate the damage response of the slab under eccentric impact loadings. In addition to the concentric location(P1)of the impacting device, five locations on a quarter of the slab i.e.,two along the diagonal(P2&P3),the other two along the mid-span(P4&P5),and the last one(P6)between P3 and P5,covering the entire slab, are considered.Computational results have been discussed and compared, and the evaluation of the most damaging location(s)of the impact is investigated. It has been found that the most critical location of the impact is not the centroid of the slab but the eccentric one with the eccentricity of 1/6th of the span from the centroid along the mid-span section. | S.M.Anas Mehtab Alam Mohd Shariq | 2023 | Defence Technology(防务技术)2023,19,1: | 1

Effect of erosion on corrosion of API X120 steel in relation to erodent particle size显示文摘The nature of the solid erodent particles present in corrosive petroleum fluid can cause transporting pipeline to experience severe erosion and corrosion damages. The effect of erosion on corrosion behavior of API X120 steel was investigated using aluminum oxide and silicon carbide particles with different sizes as erodent and 3.5wt.% NaCl aqueous solution saturated with carbon dioxide as a corrosive medium. The effect of the erodent particle size on the corrosion behavior of the steel material at different particle speeds and impact angles was investigated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and surface analysis techniques. The erosion results confirmed that the material damage increased with increasing particle speed. It was observed that in carbon dioxide-saturated saline solution, deposition of protective iron carbonate film occurred on the steel surface. It was found that the corrosion film can provide better protection at lower particle speed than at higher speed. The ratio of total erosion-corrosion (S)/effect of erosion on corrosion (T) analysis confirmed that at higher S/T ratio, the particle speed and material removal rate are low and vice versa at lower S/T ratio. Lower S/T values for the combined erosion and corrosion tests performed with erodent silicon carbide particle compared to erodent aluminum oxide particle showed that erosion enhancement of corrosion is more evident in the test performed using aluminum oxide particle than using silicon carbide particle. The result also suggests that when subjected to larger size erodent particle, the damage to pipeline due to effect of erosion on corrosion process can be more significant compared to smaller size erodent particle. | Paul C.Okonkwo Said Grami Srinivasan Murugan Shariq Khan | 2020 | Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2020,27,6: | 1
