1Cell Death Mechanisms Induced by Cytotoxic Lymphocytes显示文摘One of the functions of the immune system is to recognize and destroy abnormal or infected cells to maintain homeostasis. This is accomplished by cytotoxic lymphocytes. Cytotoxicity is a highly organized multifactor process. Here,we reviewed the apoptosis pathways induced by the two main cytotoxic lymphocyte subsets,natural killer(NK) cells and CD8+ T cells. In base to recent experimental evidence,we reviewed NK receptors involved in recognition of target-cell,as well as lytic molecules such as perforin,granzymes-A and-B,and granulysin. In addition,we reviewed the Fas-FasL intercellular linkage mediated pathway,and briefly the cross-linking of tumor necrosis factor(TNF) and TNF receptor pathway. 2Mediterranean Berries as Inhibitors of Lipid Oxidation in Porcine Burger Patties Subjected to Cooking and Chilled Storage显示文摘The efficiency of extracts from Arbutus unedo L.(AU),Crataegus monogyna L.(CM),Rosa canina L.(RC),and Rubus ulmifolius Schott.(RU)to inhibit lipid oxidation in raw,cooked and cooked and chilled(2°C/12 d)porcine burger patties,was investigated.The modification of the fatty acid profile during processing treatments(cooking and chilling),the quantitative measurements of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBA-RS),and lipid-derived volatiles,were used as indicators of lipid oxidation.Polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA)gradually decreased during cooking and the subsequent storage of cooked burger patties with this decrease being significantly greater(P<0.05)in control patties than in those with added berry extracts.In accordance,the control patties showed significantly higher TBA-RS numbers and counts of lipid-derived volatiles in all treatments when compared to the berry-added counterparts(P<0.05).Results from the present work show,for the first time,that extracts from A.unedo,C.monogyna,R.canina,and R.ulmifolius are promising antioxidants which could enhance the nutritional,safety and sensory properties of porcine burger patties.Rui Ganho Mario Estévez Mónica Armenteros David Morcuende 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:16
3Proteomics for discovery of candidate colorectal cancer biomarkers显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Europe and other Western countries,mainly due to the lack of wellvalidated clinically useful biomarkers with enough sensitivity and specificity to detect this disease at early stages.Although it is well known that the pathogenesis of CRC is a progressive accumulation of mutations in multiple genes,much less is known at the proteome level.Therefore,in the last years many proteomic studies have been conducted to find new candidate protein biomarkers for diagnosis,prognosis and as therapeutic targets for this malignancy,as well as to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of colorectal carcinogenesis.An important advantage of the proteomic approaches is the capacity to look for multiple differentially expressed proteins in a single study.This review provides an overview of the recent reports describing the different proteomic tools used for the discovery of new protein markers for CRC such as two-dimensional electrophoresis methods,quantitative mass spectrometry-based techniques or protein microarrays.Additionally,we will also focus on the diverse biological samples used for CRC biomarker discovery such as tissue,serum and faeces,besides cell lines and murine models,discussing their advantages and disadvantages,and summarize the most frequently identified candidate CRC markers.Paula lvarez-Chaver Olalla Otero-Estévez María Páez de la Cadena Francisco J Rodríguez-Berrocal Vicenta S Martínez-Zorzano 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,14:7

5Application of Natural Antioxidants from Strawberry Tree(Arbutus unedo L.) and Dog Rose(Rosa canina L.) to Frankfurters Subjected to Refrigerated Storage显示文摘The effect of the addition of natural antioxidants from strawberry tree(Arbutus unedo L.;AU)and dog rose(Rosa canina L.;RC),in frankfurters elaborated with or without the addition of antioxidant additives(sodium ascorbate and nitrite)was studied.Six different types of experimental frankfurters were prepared depending on the addition of phenolic-rich extracts from RC and AU and the presence(P)or absence(C)of antioxidant additives.Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS)-numbers significantly increased during chilled storage of C-frankfurters while additives and fruit phenolics inhibited lipid oxidation in P-frankfurters.The amount of protein carbonyls significantly increased in all treatments except in P-AU frankfurters.The discoloration process that occurred during the chilled storage was reduced by the addition of substances with proven antioxidant activity(P-frankfurters).Texture characteristics as hardness,springiness,cohesiveness and gumminess also suffered a significant deterioration in C-frankfurters.The use of phenolic fruit extracts in combination with traditional antioxidant additives is a successful strategy to enhance the oxidative stability of frankfurters without modifying their color and texture properties.Mónica Armenteros David Morcuende Sonia Ventanas Mario Estévez 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:4
6Tolerance of Chrysantemum maximum to heavy metals:The potential for its use in the revegetation of tailings heaps显示文摘To find if ornamental plants are applicable to the remediation of metal-polluted areas, the tolerance of chrysanthemum plants (Chysanthemum maximum) var. Shasta to different metals under hydroponic conditions was studied. Their responses as influenced by the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe BEG25 on substrates containing mine residues were also investigated. Our results showed that chrysanthemum is a metal-tolerant plant under hydroponic conditions, plants behaving as Pb-excluders, whereas Cd, Cu and Ni were accumulated in roots. Low accumulation in flowers was observed for Cd and Cu but it was concentration-dependent. Ni and Pb were not translocated to flowers. Shoot biomass was not significantly affected by the different rates of mine residue addition for both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal plants accumulated less Pb and Cu in both shoots and roots than non-mycorrhizal plants. 7Highly Fluorescent Dye-Doped Silica Nanoparticles Increase Flow Cytometry Sensitivity for Cancer Cell Monitoring显示文摘Early and accurate diagnosis and treatment of cancer depend on rapid,sensitive,and selective detection of tumor cells.Current diagnosis of cancers,especially leukemia,relies on histology and fl ow cytometry using single dye-labeled antibodies.However,this combination may not lead to high signal output,which can hinder detection,especially when the probes have relatively weak affi nities or when the receptor is expressed in a low concentration on the target cell surface.To solve these problems,we have developed a novel method for sensitive and rapid detection of cancer cells using dye-doped silica nanoparticles(NPs)which increases detection sensitivity in fl ow cytometry analyses between 10-and 100-fold compared to standard methods.Our NPs are~60 nm in size and can encapsulate thousands of individual dye molecules within their matrix.We have extensively investigated surface modifi cation strategies in order to make the NPs suitable for selective detection of cancer cells using fl ow cytometry.The NPs are functionalized with polyethylene glycol(PEG)to prevent nonspecifi c interactions and with neutravidin to allow universal binding with biotinylated molecules.By virtue of their reliable and selective detection of target cancer cells,these NPs have demonstrated their promising usefulness in conventional fl ow cytometry.Moreover,they have shown low background signal,high signal enhancement,and effi cient functionalization,either with antibody-or aptamer-targeting moieties.M.-Carmen Estévez Meghan B.OʼDonoghue Xiaolan Chen Weihong Tan 2009Nano Research2009,2,6:3

9Mercury removal using ground and calcined mussel shell显示文摘We determined mercury retention on calcined and ground mussel shell, in presence and absence of phosphate, using batch and stirred flow chamber experiments. In batch experiments the calcined shell exhibited higher Hg adsorption, with good fitting to Freundlich equation(R2: 0.925–0.978); the presence of phosphate increased Hg adsorption; mercury desorption was 13% or lower, diminishing up to 2% under the presence of phosphates. In stirred flow chamber experiments calcined shell retained more Hg than ground shells(6300 vs. 4000–5200 μmol/kg); Hg retention increased an additional 40% on calcined shell and up to an additional 70% on ground shells when phosphates were present; mercury desorption was quite similar in all shell types(20%–34%), increasing up to 49%–60% in ground shells when phosphates were present. The higher Hg adsorption on calcined shell would be related to its calcite and dolomite concentrations; mercury-phosphate interactions would cause the increase in Hg retention when phosphates are present. Data on Hg desorption suggest that Hg retention was not easily reversible after batch experiments, increasing in the stirred flow chamber due to convective flow. 10Effect of femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery on the optic nerve head and the macula显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery(FLALS;cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange) on the structure of the optic nerve head and the macula.METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included healthy eyes undergoing FLALS. Eyes with glaucoma or any other ocular disease that could alter optical coherence tomography results were excluded. Retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL), Bruch’s membrane opening-minimum rim width(BMO-MRW) and macular thickness(MT) were measured preoperatively, 1 and 6 mo after surgery using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT). Changes between preoperative and postoperative values were evaluated.RESULTS: A total of 87 eyes of 46 patients were included in this study. Preoperative RNFL, BMO-MRW and MT in microns(μm) were 100.77±10.39, 330.31±49.99 and 276.30±33.39, respectively. Postoperative RNFL, BMO-MRW and MT were 104.74±11.55, 348.32±54.05 and 279.83±22.65 1 mo after surgery and 102.93±11.17, 343.11±53.4 and 278.90±22.19 6 mo after surgery, respectively;which equals an increase of 3.93%, 5.45% and 1.27%,respectively, 1 mo after surgery, and 2.14%, 3.87% and 0.94% 6 mo after surgery. The differences between the preoperative and the postoperative RNFL and BMO-MRW values were statistically significant(P<0.001). Regarding MT values, there were not statistically significant differences(P=0.26).CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that FLALS does not have a negative impact on the structural status of the optic nerve head in healthy eyes, assessed by SD-OCT. 11Slope Instability on Pyroclastic Deposits: Landslide Distribution and Risk Mapping in Zacapoaxtla, Sierra Norte De Puebla, Mexico显示文摘In October 1999, rainfall induced landslides devastated different communities of the Sierra Norte, Puebla, causing more than 250 victims and economic losses greater than $ 450 million. The town of Zacapoaxtla was one of the sectors most affected by slope instability due to the existing geological features and geomorphic characters determined by material properties, landforms and processes. Extensive areas formed by pyroclastic piedmonts developed on the Quaternary volcanic ignimbrite deposits highly dissected by marginal gully erosion combined with an extreme rainfall event played a significant role as an ideal scenario for the occurrence of landsliding. Distribution of landslides triggered by rainfall within the main sector of the Zacapoaxtla municipality was analyzed by using IKONOS images in terms of exploring the likely relationship between mass movement incidence and levels of vegetation density. The later was undertaken by means of producing an NDVI and applying a fragmentation algorithm. Finally, a map of potential areas of mass movements risk was produced based on the combination of a socio-economic vulnerability index, geologic and geomorphological maps and the spatial landslide distribution.Borja-Baeza R.C.
