Tool Life and Surface Integrity in High-speed Milling of Titanium Alloy TA15 with PCD/PCBN Tools显示文摘Titanium alloys are widely used in aeronautics that demand a good combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance and low mass. The mechanical properties lead to challenges in machining operations such as high process temperature as well as rapidly increasing tool wear. The conventional tool materials are not able to maintain their hardness and other mechanical properties at higher cutting temperatures encountered in high speed machining. In this work, the new material tools, which are polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tools, are used in high-speed milling of Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V (TA15) alloy. The performance and wear mechanism of the tools are investigated. Compared to PCBN tool, PCD tool has a much longer tool life, especially at higher cutting speeds. Analyses based on the SEM and EDX suggest that attrition, adhesion and diffusion are the main wear mechanisms of PCD and PCBN tools in high-speed milling of TA15. Oxidation wear is also observed at PCBN tool/workpiece interface. Roughness, defects, micro-hardness and microstructure of the machined surface are investigated. The recorded surface roughness values with PCD/PCBN tools are bellow 0.3 μm at initial and steady cutting stage. Micro-hardness analysis shows that the machined surface hardening depth with PCD and PCBN tools is small. There is no evidence of sub-surface defects with PCD and PCBN tools. It is concluded that for TA15 alloy, high-speed milling can be carried out with PCD/PCBN tools. | SU Honghua LIU Peng FU Yucan XU Jiuhua | 2012 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2012,25,5: | 39

Comparative investigation on high-speed grinding of TiCp/Ti–6Al–4V particulate reinforced titanium matrix composites with single-layer electroplated and brazed CBN wheels显示文摘In order to develop the high-efficiency and precision machining technique of Ti Cp/Ti–6Al–4V particulate reinforced titanium matrix composites(PTMCs), high-speed grinding experiments were conducted using the single-layer electroplated cubic boron nitride(CBN) wheel and brazed CBN wheel, respectively. The comparative grinding performance was studied in terms of grinding force, grinding temperature, grinding-induced surface features and defects. The results display that the grinding forces and grinding temperature obtained with the brazed CBN wheel are always lower than those with the electroplated CBN wheel. Though the voids and microcracks are the dominant grinding-induced surface defects, the brazed CBN wheel produces less surface defects compared to the electroplated wheel according to the statistical analysis results. The maximum materials removal rate with the brazed CBN wheel is much higher than that with the electroplated one. All above indicate that the single-layer brazed CBN super-abrasive wheel is more suitable for high-speed grinding of PTMCs than the electroplated counterpart. | Li Zheng Ding Wenfeng Shen Long Xi Xinxin Fu Yucan | 2016 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2016,29,5: | 11

Grinding behavior and surface appearance of(TiC_p+ TiB_w)/Ti-6Al-4V titanium matrix composites显示文摘(TiCp+ TiBw)/Ti-6Al-4V titanium matrix composites(PTMCs) have broad application prospects in the aviation and nuclear field. However, it is a typical difficult-to-cut material due to high hardness of the reinforcements, high strength and low thermal conductivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy matrix. Grinding experiments with vitrified CBN wheels were conducted to analyze comparatively the grinding performance of PTMCs and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Grinding force and force ratios, specific grinding energy, grinding temperature, surface roughness, ground surface appearance were discussed. The results show that the normal grinding force and the force ratios of PTMCs are much larger than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Low depth of cut and high workpiece speed are generally beneficial to achieve the precision ground surface for PTMCs. The hard reinforcements of PTMCs are mainly removed in the ductile mode during grinding. However, the removal phenomenon of the reinforcements due to brittle fracture still exists, which contributes to the lower specific grinding energy and grinding temperature of PTMCs than Ti-6Al-4V alloy. | Ding Wenfeng Zhao Biao Xu Jiuhua Yang Changyong Fu Yucan Su Honghua | 2014 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2014,27,5: | 8
Tool Wear in Turning of Titanium Alloy after Thermohydrogen Treatment显示文摘The influence of hydrogen contents on the tool wear has been mainly focused on the flank wear of the common tool, and the influence of hydrogen contents on the rake crater wear(main wear type) of the tool, particularly for the fine granular material tool, has been less investigated comprehensively. In this paper, for the purpose of researching the influence of hydrogen contents on tool wear, the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is hydrogenated at 800 ℃ by thermohydrogen treatment technology and the turning experiments are carried out by applying uncoated WC-Co cemented carbide tool. The three-dimensional video microscope is used to take photos and measure tool wear. The results show that both of crater wear depth(KT) and average flank wear width(VB) firstly decreases and then increases with the increasing of hydrogen content. The maximum reducing amplitude of KT and VB is about 50% and 55%,respectively.Under the given conditions, the optimum hydrogen content is 0.26%.It is considered that the reduction of cutting temperature is an important factor for improving tool wear after the Ti-6Al-4V alloy is properly hydrogenated.Furthermore, the reasons of hydrogen effect on the tool wear are chiefly attributed to comprehensive effect of hydrogen contents on microstructure, physical properties and dynamic mechanical properties of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The proposed research provides the basic data for evaluating the machinability of hydrogenation Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and promotes practical application of thermohydrogen treatment technology in titanium alloys. | WEI Weihua XU Jiuhua FU Yucan YANG Shubao | 2012 | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2012,25,4: | 5
An investigation on adaptively machining the leading and tailing edges of an SPF/DB titanium hollow blade using free-form deformation显示文摘Titanium hollow blades are characterized with lightweight and high structural strength, which are widely used in advanced aircraft engines nowadays.Superplastic forming/diffusion bonding(SPF/DB) combined with numerical control(NC) milling is a major solution for manufacturing titanium hollow blades.Due to the shape deviation caused by multiple heat and pressure cycles in the SPF/DB process, it is hard to manufacture the leading and tailing edges by the milling process. This paper presents a new adaptive machining approach using free-form deformation to solve this problem. The actual SPF/DB shape of a hollow blade was firstly inspected by an on-machine measurement method. The measured point data were matched to the nominal SPF/DB shape with an improved ICP algorithm afterwards, by which the point-pairs between the measurement points and their corresponding points on the nominal SPF/DB shape were established, and the maximum modification amount of the final nominal shape was constrained.Based on the displacements between the point-pairs, an accurate FFD volume was iteratively calculated.By embedding the final nominal shape in the deformation space, a new final shape of the hollow blade was built. Finally, a series of measurement and machining tests was performed, the results of which validated the feasibility of the proposed adaptive machining approach. | Zhengcai ZHAO Jiuhua XU Yucan FU Zhiqiang LI | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2018,31,1: | 5
Biodegradation of N,N-dimethylacetamide by Rhodococcus sp.strain B83 isolated from the rhizosphere of pagoda tree显示文摘The biodegradation characteristic and potential metabolic pathway for removal of environmental N,N-dimethylacetamide(DMAC) by Rhodococcus sp. strain B83 was studied.Rhodococcus sp. strain B83 was isolated from the rhizosphere of a pagoda tree and proved capable of utilizing DMAC as sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Batch culture studies showed that strain B83 could tolerate up to 25 g/L DMAC and showed distinct growth on possible catabolic intermediates except for acetate. The nitrogen balance analysis revealed that approximately 71% of the initial nitrogen was converted to organic nitrogen. DMAC degradation has led to accumulation of acetate and organic nitrogen, meanwhile traces of nitrate and ammonia was build-up but without nitrite. The growth of strain B83 could be inhibited by adding exogenous acetate. By means of the assay of enzymatic degradation of DMAC, several catabolic intermediates at different intervals were observed and identified.Based on the results obtained from culture solution and enzymatic degradation assay, a detailed pathway is proposed for DMAC biodegradation. | Xingdu Chen Chengjian Yang Weiwei Wang Bizhou Ge Jun Zhang Yucan Liu Yaping Nan | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,3: | 3

Machinability of damage-tolerant titanium alloy in orthogonal turn-milling显示文摘The damage-tolerant titanium alloy TC21 is used extensively in important parts of advanced aircraft because of its high strength and durability. However, cutting TC21 entails problems, such as high cutting temperature, high tool tip stress, rapid tool wear, and difficulty guaranteeing processing quality. Orthogonal turn-milling can be used to solve these problems. In this study, the machinability of TC21 in orthogonal turn-milling is investigated experimentally to optimize the cutting parameters of orthogonal turn-milling and improve the machining efficiency, tool life, and machining quality of TC21. The mechanism of the effect of turn-milling parameters on tool life is discussed, the relationship between each parameter and tool life is analyzed, and the failure process of a TiAlN-coated tool in turn-milling is explored. Experiments are conducted on the integrity of the machined surface (surface roughness, metallographic structure, and work hardening) by turn-milling, and how the parameters influence such integrity is analyzed. Then, reasonable cutting parameters for TC21 in orthogonal turn-milling are recommended. This study provides strong guidance for exploring the machinability of difficult-to-cut-materials in orthogonal turn-milling and improves the applicability of orthogonal turn-milling for such materials. | Tao SUN Lufang QIN Junming HOU Yucan FU | 2020 | Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering2020,15,3: | 1
