| 1 | Strength behaviour of a model rock intersected by non-persistent joint显示文摘Several constructions in the field of civil engineering quite often need to deal with rocks.Strength behaviour of rock intersected by a discontinuity or a set of discontinuities has been a topic of keen interest for engineering community. The popular attributes of discontinuities that have been given due importance are their frequency, orientation and surface characteristics.Non-persistency,however,has been given little attention. This article presents an experimental study wherein focus has been made on the effect of non-persistency of the joint on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of a model rock for various geometries such as orientation, discontinuity length ratio and number of joint segments. The applicability of single plane of weakness theory(SPWT)to assess the strength of jointed specimens has also been evaluated. It has been noticed that SPWT captures the strength behaviour only for a narrow range of discontinuity orientations. As an improvement,an approach is suggested by extending concepts of degree of persistence and joint factor to have a better understanding towards strength behaviour of rocks intersected by non-persistent joints. | Divya Shaunik Mahendra Singh | 2019 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,6: | 4 |
| 2 | Bearing capacity of foundations on rock slopes intersected by non-persistent discontinuity显示文摘Rocks encountered in foundations of heavy structures are invariably intersected by discontinuities(joints). In the past, several studies have been performed by researchers to incorporate the effect of fully persistent joints in the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of rocks. However,in the field, the joints are non-persistent,and an assumption of full persistency will underestimate the capacity.Recently,Shaunik&Singh have studied the influence of non-persistency,number of joint segments and discontinuity orientation on the strength behaviour of rock specimens(Shaunik and Singh,2019).Bell’s approach can be used to obtain the bearing capacity of shallow foundations placed in jointed rocks. In the present study, results of the experimental work(Shaunik and Singh,2019)conducted by Shaunik&Singh have been used to suggest expressions by extending Bell’s approach for computing bearing capacity of the foundation placed near the crown of a rock slope.Easy to use design charts are also presented for field application. Finally,a real-life problem from Indian Garhwal Himalayas is considered, and the approach suggested in this study is utilised to obtain the bearing capacity of a bridge foundation as a function of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of intact rock, joint friction, spacing and orientation of joint, nonpersistency and number of joint segments. | Divya Shaunik Mahendra Singh | 2020 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,5: | 3 |

| 12 | Genetic diseases conferring resistance to infectious diseases显示文摘This review considers available evidence for mechanisms of conferred adaptive advantages in the face of specific infectious diseases. In short,we explore a number of genetic conditions, which carry some benefits in adverse circumstances including exposure to infectious agents. The examples discussed are conditions known to result in resistance to a specific infectious disease,or have been proposed as being associated with resistance to various infectious diseases. These infectious diseasedgenetic disorder pairings include malaria and hemoglobinopathies, cholera and cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis and Tay-Sachs disease, mycotic abortions and phenylketonuria, infection by enveloped viruses and disorders of glycosylation, infection by filoviruses and NiemannePick C1 disease,as well as rabies and myasthenia gravis. We also discuss two genetic conditions that lead to infectious disease hypersusceptibility, although we did not cover the large number of immunologic defects leading to infectious disease hypersusceptibilities.Four of the resistance-associated pairings(malaria/hemogloginopathies,cholera/cystic fibrosis,tuberculosis/Tay-Sachs,and mycotic abortions/phenylketonuria)appear to be a result of selection pressures in geographic regions in which the specific infectious agent is endemic. The other pairings do not appear to be based on selection pressure and instead may be serendipitous.Nonetheless, research investigating these relationships may lead to treatment options for the aforementioned diseases by exploiting established mechanisms between genetically affected cells and infectious organisms. This may prove invaluable as a starting point for research in the case of diseases that currently have no reliably curative treatments,e.g.,HIV,rabies,and Ebola. | Isabelle C.Withrock Stephen J.Anderson Matthew A.Jefferson Garrett R.McCormack Gregory S.A.Mlynarczyk Aron Nakama Jennifer K.Lange Carrie A.Berg Sreemoyee Acharya Matthew L.Stock Melissa S.Lind K.C.Luna Naveen C.Kondru Sireesha Manne Bhavika B.Patel Bierlein Mde la Rosa Kuei-Pin Huang Shaunik Sharma Hilary Z.Hu Sri Harsha Kanuri Steve A.Carlson | 2015 | Genes & Diseases2015,2,3: | 0 |
| 13 | 盆腔器官蝇蛆病显示文摘BACKGROUND: Myiasis is infestation with dipterous larvae, which feed on the host’s dead or living tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food. CASE: A 76-year-old, multiparous woman presented at a tertiary care hospital in India with vaginal discharge and itching for 3 weeks. The patient had a health care attendant who apparently failed to notice the problems she was experiencing. Pelvic examination revealed grade 2 uterine prolapse. Vaginal discharge was purulent, foul smelling, and contained several 8-10-mm white maggots of Musca domestica(housefly). Turpentine oil was instilled locally, and maggots were removed manually. The patient was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics. Maggot removal was repeated weekly for 3 weeks until no further maggots were present. Hysteroscopy was normal. The prolapsed uterus was replaced in its anatomic position with vaginal pessary. CONCLUSION: Decreased physical and mental capabilities due to old age and poor care by health providers can lead to maggot infestation of prolapsed pelvic organs. | Shaunik A. 柳蕴 | 2006 | 世界核心医学期刊文摘(妇产科学分册)2006,0,10: | 0 |
