Greenhouse gases fluxes and soil thermal properties in a pasture in central Missouri显示文摘Fluctuations of greenhouse gases emissions and soil properties occur at short spatial and temporal scales, however, results are often reported for larger scales studies. We monitored CO2, CH4, and N2O fluxes and soil temperature (T), thermal conductivity (K), resistivity (R) and thermal diffusivity (D) from 2004 to 2006 in a pasture. Soil air samples for determination of CO2, CH4 and N2O concentrations were collected from static and vented chambers and analyzed within two hours of collection with a gas chromatograph. T, K, R and D were measured in-situ using a KD2 probe. Soil samples were also taken for measurements of soil chemical and physical properties. The pasture acted as a sink in 2004, a source in 2005 and again a sink of CH4 in 2006. CO2 and CH4 were highest, but N2O as well as T, K and D were lowest in 2004. Only K was correlated with CO2 in 2004 while T correlated with both N2O (r = 0.76, p = 0.0001) and CO2 (r = 0.88, p = 0.0001) in 2005. In 2006, all gases fluxes were significantly correlated with T, K and R when the data for the entire year were considered. However, an in-depth examination of the data revealed the existence of month-to-month shifts, lack of correlation and differing spatial structures. These results stress the need for further studies on the relationship between soil properties and gases fluxes. K and R offer a promise as potential controlling factors for greenhouse gases fluxes in this pasture. | Nsalambi Vakanda Nkongolo Shane Johnson Kent Schmidt Frieda Eivazi | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,7: | 3

Pathological factors affecting gastric adenocarcinoma survival in a Caribbean population from 2000-2010显示文摘AIM: To investigate pathological factors related to long term patient survival post surgical management of gas-tric adenocarcinoma in a Caribbean population.METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational study of all patients treated surgically for gastric adenocarci-noma from January 1st 2000 to December 31 st 2010 at The University Hospital of the West Indies, an urban Jamaican hospital. Pathological reports of all gastrecto-my specimens post gastric cancer resection during the specified interval were accessed. Patients with a final diagnosis other than adenocarcinoma, as well as pa-tients having undergone surgery at an external institu-tion were excluded. The clinical records of the selected cohort were reviewed. The following variables were analysed; patient gender, patient age, the number of gastrectomies previous performed by the lead surgeon, the gross anatomical location and appearance of the tumour, the histological appearance of the tumour, infil-tration of the tumour into stomach wall and surround-ing structures, presence of Helicobacter pylori and the presence of gastritis. Patient status as dead vs alive was documented for the end of the interval. The effect of the aforementioned factors on patient survival were analysed using Logrank tests, Cox regression models, Ranksum tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests and Kaplan-Meier curves.RESULTS: A total of 79 patients, 36 males and 43 fe-males, were included. Their median age was 67 years(range 36-86 years). Median survival time from surgery was 70 mo with 40.5% of patients dying before the termination date of the study. Tumours ranged from 0.8 cm in size to encompassing the entire stomach speci-men, with a median tumour size of 6 cm. The median number of nodes removed at surgery was 8 with a maximum of 28. The median number of positive lymph nodes found was 2, with a range of 0 to 22. Patients' median survival time was approximately 70 mo, with 40.5% of the patients in this cohort dying before the terminal date. An increase in the incidence of cardiac tumours was noted compared to the previous 10 year interval(7.9% to 9.1%). Patients who had serosal involvement of the tumour did have a significantly shorter survival than those who did not(P = 0.017). A significant increase in the hazard ratio(HR), 2.424, for patients with circumferential tumours was found(P = 0.044). Via Kaplan-Meier estimates, the presence of venous infiltration as well as involvement of the circum-ferential resection margin were found to be poor prog-nostic markers, decreasing survival at 50 mo by 46.2% and 36.3% respectively. The increased HR for venous infiltration, 2.424, trended toward significant(P = 0.055) Age, size of tumour, number of positive nodes found and total number of lymph nodes removed were not useful predictors of survival. It is noted that the results were mostly negative, that is many tumour character-istics did not indicate any evidence of affecting patient survival. The current sample, with 30 observed events(deaths), would have about 30% power to detect a HR of 2.5.CONCLUSION: This study mirrors pathological factors used for gastric cancer prognostication in other popu-lations. As evaluation continues, a larger cohort will strengthen the significance of observed trends. | Patrick O Roberts Joseph Plummer Pierre-Anthony Leake Shane Scott Tamara G de Souza Ayesha Johnson Tracey N Gibson Barrie Hanchard Marvin Reid | 2014 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2014,6,6: | 0
Separation and Visualization of Arteries and Heart in3D Computed Tomography Angiography Images显示文摘The visualization of arteries and heart usually plays a crucial role in the clinical diagnosis, but researchers face the problems of region selection and mutual occlusion in clinical visualization. Therefore, the arteries and the heart cannot be easily visualized by current visualization methods. To solve the problems, we propose a new framework for arteries and cardiac visualization by combining a priori knowledge and the set operations.Firstly, a suitable region can be easily determined in the transfer function space with a priori knowledge and the visual feedback results. Secondly, the arteries and the heart can be directly extracted by the marked seed point. Finally, the arteries and the heart are separated for solving mutual occlusion through the set operations. This framework can easily solve the mutual occlusion problem in clinical visualization and greatly improve the region selection method in the transfer function space. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated on the basis of many experimental results. | 兰守忍 崔超毅 刘鑫 JOHNSON Shane 苏佳良 陈本智 王利生 | 2017 | Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong university(Science)2017,22,1: | 0
Effect of Skin on Finite Element Modeling of Foot and Ankle During Balanced Standing显示文摘Experimental measurements of stresses and strains for lower extremity injuries(LEI) are invasive, and therefore, predictions require physiologically accurate 3D finite element(FE) models of the foot and ankle. In previous models, skin is typically neglected. However, experimental studies have shown that skin is much stiffer than soft tissue. In this study, the material sensitivity of skin on foot arch deformation is investigated. A finite element model of the foot is developed, incorporating bones, soft tissue, ligament, articulating surfaces, plantar aponeurosis, skin and plantar plate. Balanced standing is simulated without skin or with three different skin mechanical properties. By including different skin models, the foot static vertical stiffness, navicular displacement and plantar aponeurosis strain change significantly, when compared with the model without skin. The study shows that skin, showing a much stiffer behaviour than soft tissue, should not be neglected in the foot modelling. Further, the plantar plate considered in this model can give merit to modelling injuries such as plantar plate tearing. | 欧海华 QAISER Zeeshan 康利平 JOHNSON Shane | 2018 | Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong university(Science)2018,23,1: | 0
Smart passive gait retraining intervention via pebbles for reducing peakplantar pressure: Short-term results显示文摘Recently, there has been a growing interest in gait retraining to alter the gait parameters of different populations. In these gait retraining, peak plantar pressure (PPP) was considered as an important parameter of the footbiomechanics. It has been found that high PPP correlates to the common foot deformities including pes planus/cavus. However, previous studies utilized excessive electronics in gait retraining, which is challenging toimplement daily especially when device cleaning, flexibility and portability are considered. Therefore, this studyinvestigated feasibility of a novel unpowered gait retraining for reducing high PPP. Twelve potential participantsidentified for investigation through a baseline PPP evaluation with Novel Pedar-x system. Participants received asingle session for the gait retraining with pebbles in the form of rigid spherical inserts (RSI) placed in locations ofhigh PPP inside the deformable insole. This provides tactile cues alerting the participants to alter their gait toreduce excess PPP. The PPP values were tracked in weekly follow-up sessions for 6 weeks. The results demonstrated that participants responded to RSI altering their gait to reduce PPP and maximum force by 14% and 10.5%after six weeks respectively. This study is valuable for physicians in reducing PPP when non-electronics arerequired. | Fatemeh Farhadi Haihua Ou Peter Shull Shane Johnson | 2023 | Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices2023,,3: | 0
