2The significance of the posted minimum speed limits along interstate highways in South Carolina on traffic operation and safety显示文摘This paper evaluated the significance of the posted differential speed limits(DSL)on traffic safety and operation along interstate highways in South Carolina. This paper defines DSL as the difference between the posted maximum and minimum speed limits. The paper used vehicle speed and traffic crashes for analysis. The evaluation results showed over 99%of all vehicles complied with the posted 45 mph minimum speed limit and more than 50%of drivers drove above the posted maximum speed limit regardless of the posted maximum speed limits. The results also indicated that speed variations increased as the DSL increased. However, the safety evaluation showed conflicting results on the impacts of the DSL on safety. The results showed the DSL had negative implications on crashes per AADT per lane. This is attributed to increased interactions between slower and faster-moving vehicles in the traffic stream. On the contrary,it was observed that segments with higher DSL had fewer crashes per mile per lane than the segments with the lower DSL.These results suggest there is a need to conduct more research to quantify the efficacy of posting the minimum speed limit because there were no problems observed with motorists driving too slowly on interstate highways. The results provide important information on the efficacy of posting minimum speed limits to improve the uniformity of traffic flow and safety.Saidi Siuhi Md Mahmud Hasan Mamun Judith Mwakalonge 2021Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2021,8,5:1
3Application of Polygonum minus Extract in Enhancing Drought Tolerance in Maize by Regulating Osmotic and Antioxidant System显示文摘Drought stress is a major factor affecting plant growth and crop yield production.Plant extracts as natural biostimulants hold great potential to strengthen plants to overcome drought impacts. To explore the effect of Polygonum minus extract(PME)in enhancing drought tolerance in plants,a study was set up in a glasshouse environment using 10 different treatment combinations.PME foliar application were designed in CRD and effects were closely observed related to the growth, physiology, and antioxidant system changes in maize(Zea mays L.)under well-watered and drought conditions. The seaweed extract(SWE)was used as a comparison.Plants subjected to drought stress exhibited a significant reduction in fresh weight, dry weight, relative water content(RWC),and soluble sugar, but they stimulated the phenolic, flavonoid, proline, glutathione(GSH),malondialdehyde(MDA)and antioxidant enzyme(catalase,CAT;peroxidase,POD;superoxide dismutase,SOD)activities.Foliar application of PME improved fresh and dry weight(FW:33.1%~41.4%;DW:48.0%~43.1%),chlorophyll content(Chl b:87.9%~100.76%),soluble sugar(23.6%~49.3%),and soluble protein(48.6%~56.9%)as well as antioxidant enzyme activities(CAT and POD)compared to CK under drought conditions.while decreasing the level of MDA.Notably, the mitigating effect of PME application with high concentration was more effective than those of SWE.Our study reveals that PME could alleviate drought stress by regulating osmoprotectant content and antioxidant defense system and can be used as an economical and environmentally friendly biostimulants for promoting maize growth under drought stress.Mingzhao Han Susilawati Kasim Zhongming Yang Xi Deng Md Kamal Uddin Noor Baity Saidi Effyanti Mohd Shuib 2024Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2024,93,2:0
4Protective Factors for Loneliness among Adolescents during COVID-19: Role of the Interpersonal Relationships and Sibling Status显示文摘This study examined the moderating effects of parent-child,same-sex,opposite-sex and teacher-student relation-ships between sibling status and loneliness during COVID-19.A total of 1,591 adolescents in China completed the study questionnaires which assessed the aforementioned variables. The results showed that same-sex and teacher-student relationships moderated the association between sibling status and loneliness. The results indicated that among participants with good same-sex relationships during COVID-19,compared to non-only-children parti-cipants,the only-children participants were more likely to experience a lower level of loneliness.However,parti-cipants with poor same-sex relationships experienced similar level of loneliness regardless of whether they had siblings.Thesefindings would be helpful for parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to take effective measures to reduce loneliness feelings among Chinese adolescents.Sha Shen Saidi Wang Md Zahir Ahmed Fatema Akhter Hiramoni Jingrong Sha Xiangdong Yan Mary C.Jobe Oli Ahmed 2021International Journal of Mental Health Promotion2021,23,4:0
