1Comparisons of passive microwave remote sensing sea ice concentrations with ship-based visual observations during the CHINARE Arctic summer cruises of 2010–2018显示文摘In order to apply satellite data to guiding navigation in the Arctic more effectively,the sea ice concentrations(SIC)derived from passive microwave(PM)products were compared with ship-based visual observations(OBS)collected during the Chinese National Arctic Research Expeditions(CHINARE).A total of 3667 observations were collected in the Arctic summers of 2010,2012,2014,2016,and 2018.PM SIC were derived from the NASA-Team(NT),Bootstrap(BT)and Climate Data Record(CDR)algorithms based on the SSMIS sensor,as well as the BT,enhanced NASA-Team(NT2)and ARTIST Sea Ice(ASI)algorithms based on AMSR-E/AMSR-2 sensors.The daily arithmetic average of PM SIC values and the daily weighted average of OBS SIC values were used for the comparisons.The correlation coefficients(CC),biases and root mean square deviations(RMSD)between PM SIC and OBS SIC were compared in terms of the overall trend,and under mild/normal/severe ice conditions.Using the OBS data,the influences of floe size and ice thickness on the SIC retrieval of different PM products were evaluated by calculating the daily weighted average of floe size code and ice thickness.Our results show that CC values range from 0.89(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2)to 0.95(SSMIS NT),biases range from−3.96%(SSMIS NT)to 12.05%(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2),and RMSD values range from 10.81%(SSMIS NT)to 20.15%(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2).Floe size has a significant influence on the SIC retrievals of the PM products,and most of the PM products tend to underestimate SIC under smaller floe size conditions and overestimate SIC under larger floe size conditions.Ice thickness thicker than 30 cm does not have a significant influence on the SIC retrieval of PM products.Overall,the best(worst)agreement occurs between OBS SIC and SSMIS NT(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2)SIC in the Arctic summer.Yuanren Xiu Zhijun Li Ruibo Lei Qingkai Wang Peng Lu Matti Leppäranta 2020Acta Oceanologica Sinica2020,39,9:6
2The physical structures of snow and sea ice in the Arctic section of 150°-180°W during the summer of 2010显示文摘The physical structures of snow and sea ice in the Arctic section of 150°-180°W were observed on the basis of snow-pit, ice-core, and drill-hole measurements from late July to late August 2010. Almost all the investigated floes were first-year ice, except for one located north of Alaska, which was probably multi-year ice transported from north of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago during early summer. The snow covers over all the investigated floes were in the melting phase, with temperatures approaching 0℃ and densities of 295-398 kg/m3 . The snow covers can be divided into two to five layers of different textures, with most cases having a top layer of fresh snow, a round-grain layer in the middle, and slush and/or thin icing layers at the bottom. The first-year sea ice contained about 7%-17% granular ice at the top. There was no granular ice in the lower layers. The interior melting and desalination of sea ice introduced strong stratifications of temperature, salinity, density, and gas and brine volume fractions. The sea ice temperature exhibited linear cooling with depth, while the salinity and the density increased linearly with normalized depth from 0.2 to 0.9 and from 0 to 0.65, respectively. The top layer, especially the freeboard layer, had the lowest salinity and density, and consequently the largest gas content and the smallest brine content. Both the salinity and density in the ice basal layer were highly scattered due to large differences in ice porosity among the samples. The bulk average sea ice temperature, salinity, density, and gas and brine volume fractions were-0.8℃, 1.8, 837 kg/m3 , 9.3% and 10.4%, respectively. 4Changes in sea ice kinematics in the Arctic outflow region and their associations with Arctic Northeast Passage accessibility显示文摘Amplification of climate warming in the Arctic is causing a dramatic retreat of sea ice, which means the Arctic sea routes are becoming increasingly accessible. This study used a satellite-derived sea ice motion product to quantify the kinematic features of sea ice in the Arctic outflow region which specially referred to the Fram Strait and to the north of the Northeast Passage(NEP). An observed trend of increased southward sea ice displacement from the central Arctic to the Fram Strait indicated enhancement of the Transpolar Drift Stream(TDS). In the regions to the north of the NEP, the long-term trend of northward sea ice speed in the Kara sector was +0.04 cm/s per year in spring. A significant statistical relationship was found between the NEP open period and the northward speed of the sea ice to the north of the NEP. The offshore advection of sea ice could account for the opening of sea routes by 33% and 15% in the Kara and Laptev sectors, respectively. The difference in sea level pressure across the TDS,i.e., the Central Arctic Index(CAI), presented more significant correlation than for the Arctic atmospheric Dipole Anomaly index with the open period of the NEP, and the CAI could explain the southward displacement of sea ice toward the Fram Strait by more than 45%. 6A concept for autonomous and continuous observation of melt pond morphology: Instrument design and test trail during the 4th CHINARE-Arctic in 2010显示文摘Accelerated decline of summer and winter Arctic sea ice has been demonstrated progressively. Melt ponds play a key role in enhancing the feedback of solar radiation in the ice/ocean-atmosphere system, and have thus been a focus of researchers and modelers. A new melt pond investigation system was designed to determine morphologic and hydrologic features, and their evolution. This system consists of three major parts:Temperature-salinity measuring, surface morphology monitoring, and water depth monitoring units. The setup was deployed during the ice camp period of the fourth Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition in summer 2010. The evolution of a typical Arctic melt pond was documented in terms of pond depth, shape and surface condition. These datasets are presented to scientifically reveal how involved parameters change, contributing to better understanding of the evolution mechanism of the melt pond. The main advantage of this system is its suitability for autonomous and long-term observation, over and within a melt pond. Further, the setup is portable and robust. 7Physical and optical characteristics of sea ice in the Pacific Arctic Sector during the summer of 2018显示文摘The reduction in Arctic sea ice in summer has been reported to have a significant impact on the global climate.In this study,Arctic sea ice/snow at the end of the melting season in 2018 was investigated during CHINARE-2018,in terms of its temperature,salinity,density and textural structure,the snow density,water content and albedo,as well as morphology and albedo of the refreezing melt pond.The interior melting of sea ice caused a strong stratification of temperature,salinity and density.The temperature of sea ice ranged from–0.8℃ to 0℃,and exhibited linear cooling with depth.The average salinity and density of sea ice were approximately 1.3 psu and 825 kg/m3,respectively,and increased slightly with depth.The first-year sea ice was dominated by columnar grained ice.Snow cover over all the investigated floes was in the melt phase,and the average water content and density were 0.74%and 241 kg/m3,respectively.The thickness of the thin ice lid ranged from 2.2 cm to 7.0 cm,and the depth of the pond ranged from 1.8 cm to 26.8 cm.The integrated albedo of the refreezing melt pond was in the range of 0.28–0.57.Because of the thin ice lid,the albedo of the melt pond improved to twice as high as that of the mature melt pond.These results provide a reference for the current state of Arctic sea ice and the mechanism of its reduction.Xiaowei Cao Peng Lu Ruibo Lei Qingkai Wang Zhijun Li 2020Acta Oceanologica Sinica2020,39,9:2
8AOA and AOB communities respond differently to changes of soil pH under long-term fertilization显示文摘Archaeal and bacterial ammonia-oxidizers drive the first step of nitrification,ammonia oxidation.Despite their importance,the relative contribution of soil factors influencing the abundance,diversity and community composition of ammonia oxidizing archaea(AOA)and bacteria(AOB)are seldom compared.In this study,the AOA and AOB communities in soils from a long-term fertilization experiment(which formed gradients of pH and nutrients)were measured using 454 pyrosequencing of the amoA gene.Results showed that both AOA and AOB communities were influenced by fertilization practice.Changes of AOA abundance,diversity and community structure were closely correlated with a single factor,soil pH,and the abundance and diversity of AOA were lower under the acidified treatments.By contrast,AOB abundance was higher in the acidified soil than in the control soil while AOB diversity was little impacted by soil acidification,and both the abundance and diversity of AOB were most highly correlated with soil carbon and available phosphorus.These results indicated that AOB diversity seemed more resistant to soil acidification than that of AOA,and also suggested that AOB have greater ecophysiological diversity and broader range of habitats than AOA in this lime concretion black soil,and the potential contribution of AOB to ammonia oxidation in acid environments should not be overlooked.Ruibo Sun David DMyrold Daozhong Wang Xisheng Guo Haiyan Chu 2019Soil Ecology Letters2019,1,3:2

11Programming bare-metal accelerators with heterogeneous threading models:a case study of Matrix-3000显示文摘As the hardware industry moves toward using specialized heterogeneous many-core processors to avoid the effects of the power wall,software developers are finding it hard to deal with the complexity of these systems.In this paper,we share our experience of developing a programming model and its supporting compiler and libraries for Matrix-3000,which is designed for next-generation exascale supercomputers but has a complex memory hierarchy and processor organization.To assist its software development,we have developed a software stack from scratch that includes a low-level programming interface and a high-level OpenCL compiler.Our low-level programming model offers native programming support for using the bare-metal accelerators of Matrix-3000,while the high-level model allows programmers to use the OpenCL programming standard.We detail our design choices and highlight the lessons learned from developing system software to enable the programming of bare-metal accelerators.Our programming models have been deployed in the production environment of an exascale prototype system.Jianbin FANG Peng ZHANG Chun HUANG Tao TANG Kai LU Ruibo WANG Zheng WANG 2023Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering2023,24,4:1

14China’s Recent Progresses in Polar Climate Change and Its Interactions with the Global Climate System显示文摘During the recent four decades since 1980,a series of modern climate satellites were launched,allowing for the measurement and record-keeping of multiple climate parameters,especially over the polar regions where traditional observations are difficult to obtain.China has been actively engaging in polar expeditions.Many observations were conducted during this period,accompanied by improved Earth climate models,leading to a series of insightful understandings concerning Arctic and Antarctic climate changes.Here,we review the recent progress China has made concerning Arctic and Antarctic climate change research over the past decade.The Arctic temperature increase is much higher than the global-mean warming rate,associated with a rapid decline in sea ice,a phenomenon called the Arctic Amplification.The Antarctic climate changes showed a zonally asymmetric pattern over the past four decades,with most of the fastest changes occurring over West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula.The Arctic and Antarctic climate changes were driven by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and ozone loss,while tropical-polar teleconnections play important roles in driving the regional climate changes and extreme events over the polar regions.Polar climate changes may also feedback to the entire Earth climate system.The adjustment of the circulation in both the troposphere and the stratosphere contributed to the interactions between the polar climate changes and lower latitudes.Climate change has also driven rapid Arctic and Southern ocean acidification.Chinese researchers have made a series of advances in understanding these processes,as reviewed in this paper.Xichen LI Xianyao CHEN Bingyi WU Xiao CHENG Minghu DING Ruibo LEI Di QI Qizhen SUN Xiaoyu WANG Wenli ZHONG Lei ZHENG Meijiao XIN Xiaocen SHEN Chentao SONG Yurong HOU 2023Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2023,40,8:1

17Advancing the understanding of variations of Arctic sea ice optical and thermal behaviors through an international research and mobility project显示文摘In recent decades, significant changes of Arctic sea ice have taken place. These changes are expected to influence the surface energy balance of the ice-covered Arctic Ocean. To quantify this energy balance and to increase our understanding of mechanisms leading to observed changes in the Arctic sea ice, the project 'Advancing Modelling and Observing solar Radiation of Arctic sea ice—understanding changes and processes(AMORA)' was initiated and conducted from 2009 to 2013. AMORA was funded and organized under a frame of Norway-China bilateral collaboration program with partners from Finland, Germany, and the USA. The primary goal of the project was achieved by developing an autonomous spectral radiation buoy, deploying it on drifting sea ice close to the North Pole, and receiving a high-resolution time series of spectral radiation over and under sea ice from spring(before melt onset) to autumn(after freeze-up) 2012. Beyond this, in-situ sea ice data were collected during several field campaigns and simulations of snow and sea ice thermodynamics were performed. More autonomous measurements are available through deployments of sea ice mass balance buoys. These new observational data along with numerical model studies are helping us to better understand the key thermodynamic processes of Arctic sea ice and changes in polar climate. 18Myo-inositol accelerates the metamorphosis from megalopa to crablet of Scylla paramamosain by modulating cuticle decomposition and reconstruction显示文摘The mud crab Scylla paramamosain is a key species in China due to its high nutritional value and great economic worth and has grown in popularity.Myo-inositol can modulate versatile physiological functions in aquatic animals.In the present study,S.paramamosain megalopa were given graded concentrations of myo-inositol(0,1,2,4,and 8 ppm)by water immersion to explore how their metamorphosis would be affected.The results showed that supplementing with myo-inositol remarkably increased transformation and survival rate from megalopa to crablet by at least 1.16 and 1.26 times,respectively.To decipher the molecular mechanism of how myo-inositol increases metamorphosis and survival rate,we further performed transcriptome-based gene expression profiling of both megalopa and crablet treated with myo-inositol.The integrative transcriptome analyses predicted that the differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were significantly enriched in chitinase activity,structural constituent of cuticle,and chitin binding,which are associated with the decomposition and reconstruction of cuticle.qPCR results confirmed that myo-inositol mediated gene expression levels of the above cuticle-related pathways.Considering the importance of the cuticle in exoskeleton formation and molting,it can be concluded that myo-inositol-induced changes in the cuticle decomposition and reconstruction might have accelerated the transformation from megalopa to crablet of S.paramamosain.Besides,numerous DEGs were significantly enriched in protein digestion and absorption,amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism.It implies that myo-inositol may improve survival by regulating energy or nutrient absorption.Additionally,the accelerated metamorphosis by myo-inositol may improve survival from megalopa to crablet of S.paramamosain.Overall,this study will provide the first insights into the underlying molecular mechanisms by which myo-inositol increases metamorphosis and survival.Wenxiao Cui Hafiz Sohaib Ahmed Saqib Weifeng Gao Ruibo Wang Yang He Yang Yu Zhen Lin Qingyu Zhang Yin Zhang Shengkang Li Huaiping Zheng Yueling Zhang Mhd Ikhwanuddin Hongyu Ma 2023Aquaculture and Fisheries2023,8,6:0
19Combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizers stabilizes soil N-cycling microflora显示文摘Straw and manure are widely applied to agricultural systems,and greatly shape soil N-cycling microflora.However,we still lack a comprehensive understanding of how these organic materials structure soil N-cycling microbial communities.In this study,metagenomic analysis was performed to investigate the compositional variation in N-cycling microbial communities in a 30-year long-term experiment under five fertilization regimes:no fertilization(Control),chemical fertilization only(NPK),and NPK with wheat straw(NPK+HS),pig manure(NPK+PM),and cow manure(NPK+CM).Long-term NPK application differentially changed N-cycling gene abundance and greatly altered N-cycling microbial community structure.NPK+HS resulted in a similar pattern to NPK in terms of gene abundance and community structure.However,NPK+PM and NPK+CM significantly increased most genes and resulted in a community similar to that of the Control.Further analysis revealed that serious soil acidification caused by long-term NPK fertilization was a major factor for the variation in N-cycling microbial communities.The addition of alkaline manure,rather than wheat straw,stabilized the N-cycling microbial community structure presumably by alleviating soil acidification.These results revealed the strong impact of soil acidification on microbial N-cycling communities and illustrated the possibility of resolving nitrogen-related environmental problems by manipulating pH in acidified agricultural soils.Ruibo Sun Daozhong Wang Zhibin Guo Keke Hua Xisheng Guo Yan Chen Binbin Liu Haiyan Chu 2023Soil Ecology Letters2023,5,3:0
202014 summer Arctic sea ice thickness and concentration from shipborne observations显示文摘A series of shipborne sea ice observations were performed during the Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition in the Pacific Arctic sector between 2 August 2014 and 1 September 2014.Undeformed sea ice thickness(SIT)as well as area fractions of open water,melt pond,and sea ice(Aw,Ap,and Ai)were monitored using downward-oriented and oblique-oriented cameras.The results show that SIT varied between 20 and 220 cm throughout the whole cruise,with the average and standard deviation equaling 104.9 and 29.1 cm,respectively.Mean Aw and Ai were 0.52 and 0.44 in the marginal ice zone,respectively,while mean Aw decreased to 0.23 and mean Ai increased to 0.73 in the pack ice zone.Limited variation between 0 and 0.32 in Ap was seen throughout the whole cruise.Shipborne sea ice concentration was then rectified and mapped across a large transect to validate estimates derived from the satellite sensors Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder(SSMIS)(25 km)and AMSR2(25 km).Overestimations were 9.5%and 9.9%for SSMIS and AMSR2 compared with measurements,respectively.The mean areal broadband surface albedo based on shipborne survey increased from 0.07 to 0.66 along the transect between 72°N and 81°N.Qingkai Wang Zhijun Li Peng Lu Ruibo Lei Bin Cheng 2019International Journal of Digital Earth2019,12,8:0
