| 1 | Global blue carbon accumulation in tidal wetlands increases with climate change显示文摘Coastal tidal wetlands produce and accumulate significant amounts of organic carbon(C)that help to mitigate climate change.However,previous data limitations have prevented a robust evaluation of the global rates and mechanisms driving C accumulation.Here,we go beyond recent soil C stock estimates to reveal global tidal wetland C accumulation and predict changes under relative sea level rise,temperature and precipitation.We use data from literature study sites and our new observations spanning wide latitudinal gradients and 20 countries.Globally,tidal wetlands accumulate 53.65(95%CI:48.52-59.01)Tg C yr^(-1),which is~30%of the organic C buried on the ocean floor.Modeling based on current climatic drivers and under projected emissions scenarios revealed a net increase in the global C accumulation by2100.This rapid increase is driven by sea level rise in tidal marshes,and higher temperature and precipitation in mangroves.Countries with large areas of coastal wetlands,like Indonesia and Mexico,are more susceptible to tidal wetland C losses under climate change,while regions such as Australia,Brazil,the USA and China will experience a significant C accumulation increase under all projected scenarios. | Faming Wang Christian J.Sanders Isaac R.Santos Jianwu Tang Mark Schuerch Matthew L.Kirwan Robert E.Kopp Kai Zhu Xiuzhen Li Jiacan Yuan Wenzhi Liu Zhian Li | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,9: | 22 |

It has been suggested that Notch signaling can regulate Sox9 transcription, although how this occurs at the molecular level in chondrocytes and whether this transcriptional regulation mediates Notch control of chondrocyte hypertrophy and cartilage development is unknown or controversial. Here we have provided conclusive genetic evidence linking RBPjk-dependent Notch signaling to the regulation of Sox9 expression and chondrocyte hypertrophy by examining tissuespecific Rbpjk mutant(Prx1Cre;Rbpjkf/f), Rbpjk mutant/Sox9 haploinsufficient(Prx1Cre;Rbpjkf/f;Sox9f/1),and control embryos for alterations in SOX9 expression and chondrocyte hypertrophy during cartilage development. These studies demonstrate that Notch signaling regulates the onset of chondrocyte maturation in a SOX9-dependent manner, while Notch-mediated regulation of terminal chondrocyte maturation likely functions independently of SOX9. | 5 | Ketogenic diet alleviates colitis by reduction of colonic group 3 innate lymphoid cells through altering gut microbiome显示文摘Accumulating evidence suggests that ketogenic diets(KDs)mediate the rise of circulating ketone bodies and exert a potential antiinflammatory effect;however,the consequences of this unique diet on colitis remain unknown.We performed a series of systematic studies using a dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)animal model of inflammatory colitis.Animals were fed with a KD,low-carbohydrate diet(LCD),or normal diet(ND).Germ-free mice were utilized in validation experiments.Colon tissues were analyzed by transcriptome sequencing,RT2 profiler PCR array,histopathology,and immunofluorescence.Serum samples were analyzed by metabolic assay kit.Fecal samples were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing,liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.We observed that KD alleviated colitis by altering the gut microbiota and metabolites in a manner distinct from LCD.Quantitative diet experiments confirmed the unique impact of KD relative to LCD with a reproducible increase in Akkermansia,whereas the opposite was observed for Escherichia/Shigella.After colitis induction,the KD protected intestinal barrier function,and reduced the production of R0Ryt+CD3_group 3 innate lymphoid cells(ILC3s)and related inflammatory cytokines(IL-17a,IL-18,IL-22,Ccl4).Finally,fecal microbiota transplantation into germ-free mice revealed that the KD-mediated colitis inhibition and ILC3 regulation were dependent on the modification of gut microbiota.Taken together,our study presents a global view of microbiome-metabolomics changes that occur during KD colitis treatment,and identifies the regulation of gut microbiome and ILC3s as novel targets involving in IBD dietary therapy. | Cheng Kong Xuebing Yan Yongqiang Liu Linsheng Huang Yefei Zhu Jide He Renyuan Gao Matthew F.Kalady Ajay Goel Huanlong Qin Yanlei Ma | 2021 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2021,6,5: | 8 |

| 9 | Proton pump inhibitors increase the severity of hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhotic patients显示文摘BACKGROUND Liver cirrhosis is the late stage of hepatic fibrosis and is characterized by portal hypertension that can clinically lead to decompensation in the form of ascites,esophageal/gastric varices or encephalopathy.The most common sequelae associated with liver cirrhosis are neurologic and neuropsychiatric impairments labeled as hepatic encephalopathy(HE).Well established triggers for HE include infection,gastrointestinal bleeding,constipation,and medications.Alterations to the gut microbiome is one of the leading ammonia producers in the body,and therefore may make patients more susceptible to HE.AIM To investigate the relationship between the use of proton pump inhibitors(PPIs)and HE in patients with cirrhosis.METHODS This is a single center,retrospective analysis.Patients were included in the study with an admitting diagnosis of HE.The degree of HE was determined from subjective and objective portions of hospital admission notes using the West Haven Criteria.The primary outcome of the study was to evaluate the grade of HE in PPI users versus non-users at admission to the hospital and throughout their hospital course.Secondary outcomes included rate of infection,gastrointestinal bleeding within the last 12 mo,mean ammonia level,and model for end-stage liver disease scores at admission.RESULTS The HE grade at admission using the West Haven Criteria was 2.3 in the PPI group compared to 1.7 in the PPI nonuser group(P=0.001).The average length of hospital stay in PPI group was 8.3 d compared to 6.5 d in PPI nonusers(P=0.046).Twenty-seven(31.8%)patients in the PPI user group required an Intensive Care Unit admission during their hospital course compared to 6 in the PPI nonuser group(16.7%)(P=0.138).Finally,10(11.8%)patients in the PPI group expired during their hospital stay compared to 1 in the PPI nonuser group(2.8%)(P=0.220).CONCLUSION Chronic PPI use in cirrhotic patients is associated with significantly higher average West Haven Criteria for HE compared to patients that do not use PPIs. | Matthew Fasullo Prashanth Rau Dong-Qi Liu Erik Holzwanger Jomol P Mathew Yurima Guilarte-Walker Gyongyi Szabo | 2019 | World Journal of Hepatology2019,11,6: | 4 |
| 10 | Chemical characterization and sources of PM2.5 at 12-h resolution in Guiyang, China显示文摘The increasing emission of primary and gaseous precursors of secondarily formed atmospheric particulate matter due to continuing industrial development and urbanization are leading to an increased public awareness of environmental issues and human health risks in China.As part of a pilot study, 12-h integrated fine fraction particulate matter(PM_(2.5) filter samples were collected to chemically characterize and investigate the sources of ambient particulate matter in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. Results showed that the 12-h integrated PM_(2.5) concentrations exhibited a daytime average of 51 ± 22 lg m^(-3)(mean ± standard deviation) with a range of 17–128 lg m^(-3) and a nighttime average of55 ± 32 lg m~(^(-3)) with a range of 4–186 lg m^(-3). The 24-h integrated PM_(2.5) concentrations varied from 15 to157 lg m~(^(-3)), with a mean value of 53 ± 25 lg m^(-3), which exceeded the 24-h PM_(2.5) standard of 35 lg m^(-3) set by USEPA, but was below the standard of 75 lg m^(-3), set by China Ministry of Environmental Protection. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry(XRF) was applied to determine PM_(2.5) chemical element concentrations. The order of concentrations of heavy metals in PM_(2.5) were iron(Fe) [ zinc(Zn) [ manganese(Mn) [ lead(Pb) [ arsenic(As) [ chromium(Cr). The majority of extant mosses develop a sporangium that dehisces through the loss of an operculum, and regulates spore release through the movement of articulate teeth, the peristome, lining the capsule mouth. Such complexity was acquired by the Mesozoic Era, but was lost in some groups during subsequent diversification events, challenging the resolution of the affinities for taxa with reduced architectures. The Funariaceae are a cosmopolitan and diverse lineage of mostly annual mosses, and exhibit variable sporophyte complexities, spanning from long, exerted, operculate capsules with two rings of well‐developed teeth, to capsules immersed among maternal leaves, lacking a differentiated line of dehiscence (i.e., inoperculate) and without peristomes. The family underwent a rapid diversification, and the relationships of taxa with reduced sporophytes remain ambiguous. Here, we infer the relationships of five taxa with highly reduced sporophytes based on 648 nuclear loci (exons complemented by their flanking regions), based on inferences from concatenated data and concordance analysis of single gene trees. Physcomitrellopsis is resolved as nested within one clade of Entosthodon. Physcomitrella s. l., is resolved as a polyphyletic assemblage and, along with its putative relative Aphanorrhegma, nested within Physcomitrium. We propose a new monophyletic delineation of Physcomitrium, which accommodates species of Physcomitrella and Aphanorrhegma. | 13 | Identification of a novel pathway involving a GATA transcription factor in yeast and possibly in plant Zn uptake and homeostasis显示文摘To gain a better understanding of the regulation of Zn homeostasis in plants and the degree of conservation of Zn homeostasis between plants and yeast, a cDNA library from the Zn/Cd hyperaccumulating plant species, Noccaea caerulescens, was screened for its ability to restore growth under Zn limiting conditions in the yeast mutant zap1D. ZAP1 is a transcription factor that activates the Zn dependent transcription of yeast genes involved in Zn uptake, including ZRT1, the yeast high affinity Zn transporter. From this screen two members of the E2F family of transcription factors were found to activate ZRT1 expression in a Zn independent manner. The activation of ZRT1 by the plant E2F proteins involves E2F‐mediated activation of a yeast GATA transcription factor which in turn activates ZRT1 expression. A ZRT1 promoter region necessary for activation by E2F and GATA proteins is upstream of two zinc responsive elements previously shown to bind ZAP1in ZRT1. This activation may not involve direct binding of E2F to the ZRT1 promoter. Previous work has demonstrated Wnt7b as an endogenous ligand upregulated during osteoblast differentiation, and that Wnt7b overexpression potently stimulates bone accrual in the mouse. The earlier studies however did not address whether Wnt7b could promote bone formation when specifically applied to aged or fractured bones. Here we have developed a doxycycline-inducible strategy where Wnt7b is temporally induced in the bones of aged mice or during fracture healing. We report that forced expression of Wnt7b for 1 month starting at 15 months of age greatly stimulated trabecular and endosteal bone formation, resulting in a marked increase in bone mass. We further tested the effect of Wnt7b on bone healing in a murine closed femur fracture model. Induced expression of Wnt7b at the onset of fracture did not affect the initial cartilage formation but promoted mineralization of the subsequent bone callus. | 18 | Dynamics of soil organic carbon following land-use change:insights from stable C-isotope analysis in black soil of Northeast China显示文摘Intensive soil tillage is a significant factor in soil organic matter decline in cultivated soils. Both cultivation abandonment and foregoing tillage have been encouraged in the past 30 years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and soil erosion. However, the dynamic processes of soil organic carbon (SOC) in areas of either continuous cultivation or abandonment remain unclear and inconsistent.Our aims were to assess and model the dynamic processes of SOC under continuous tillage and after cultivation abandonment in the black soil of Northeast China. Soil profiles were collected of cultivated or abandoned land with cultivation history of 0–100 years. An isotope mass balance equation was used to calculate the proportion of SOC derived from corn debris (C_4) and from natural vegetation (C_3) to deduce the dynamic process. Approximately 40% of SOC in the natural surface soil (0–10 cm) was eroded in the first 5 years of cultivation, increasing to about 75% within 40 years, before a slow recovery. C_4 above 30 cm soil depth increased by 4.5%–5% or 0.11–0.12 g·kg^(-1) on average per year under continuous cultivation, while it decreased by approximately 0.34% annually in the surface soil after cultivation abandonment.The increase in the percentage of C_4 was fitted to a linear equation with given intercepts in the upper 30 cm of soil in cultivated land. A significant relationship between the change of C_4 and time was found only in the surface soil after abandonment of cultivation. | 19 | Rhubarb-based Chinese herbal formulae for hepatic encephalopa-thy:a systematic review and Meta-analysis显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of rhubarb-based Chinese herbal formulae(RCHF), which are widely used to treat hepatic encephalopathy(HE) in China.METHODS: Nine online databases were searched from inception to November 22, 2016. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) treatment for adult patients(≥ 18 years old) with HE. Outcomes such as mortality rate, clinical response rate, blood ammonia level, and alanine aminotransferase were evaluated between TCM group and control group.RESULTS: Thirty studies involving 2661 HE patients were analyzed. Most studies used RCHF treatment.Compared with conventional treatment as usual,lactulose, and vinegar, RCHF were associated with significant improvement in clinical response rate[risk ratio(RR) = 1.33, 95% confidence interval(CI) =1.25, 1.43, I2= 0%; RR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.14, 1.38, I2=22%; and RR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.06, 1.33, I2= 0%, respectively] and significant reductions in levels of blood ammonia and alanine aminotransferase. Only minor RCHF-associated adverse events, such as abdominal pain(0.3%), anal tenesmus(0.3%), and diarrhea(2.3%), were reported, and there were no significant differences in these events between the treatment group and the three types of control group.CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that RCHF may be an alternative treatment option for HE patients.
