| 1 | Metallothionein:An overview显示文摘Metallothioneins (MTs) were discovered in 1957 by Margoshes and Vallee and identified as low-molecular weight and sulphydryl rich proteins. It is not surprising that most mammalian tissues contain age related basal levels of MTs since they are involved in metalloregulatory processes that include cell growth and multiplication. In an effort to understand the biology of this intriguing tumor, various biomarkers such as oncogenes, p53 tumor suppressor gene, waf 1 protein, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, telomerase, microsatellite markers and cytogenetic changes have been examined. One biomarker which has recently shown to be expressed in various human tumors but still less reported in carcinoma is MT. | 2 | Antidiabetic,antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant potential of methanol extract of Tectona grandis flowers in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate antidiabetic,antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activity of methanol extract of Tectona grandis(T.grandis) flowers(METGF) in streplozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats to supports its traditional use.Methods:Acute toxicity study of METGF was carried out in rat to determine its dose for the antidiabetic study.Oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) was performed to evaluate METGF effect on elevated blood glucose level.Diabetes was induced in rats by administration of STZ(60 mg/kg,ip.) and it was confirmed 72 h after induction.METGF was orally given to the diabetic rats up to 28 days and blood glucose level were estimated each week.On 28 day of the experiment,diabetic rats were sacrificed after the blood collection for the biochemical parameters analysis and liver,kidney was collected to determine antioxidants levels.Results: In acute toxicity,METGF did not show toxicity and death up to a dose 2 000 mg/kg in rats. Administration of METGF 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly(P<0.001) reduced blood glucose levels in OGTT and STZ-induced diabetic rats.Both doses of METGF treatment significantly(P<0.001, P<0.01 and P<0.05) increased body weight,serum insulin,haemoglobin(Hb) and total protein levels in diabetic rats.Also,MEGTF treatment reduced elevated glycosylated haemoglobin(HbA1c) and other biochemical parameters levels significantly(P<0.001) in diabetic rats.Altered lipid profiles and antioxidants levels were reversed to near normal in diabetic rats treated with METGF. | 3 | Antipyretic,anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of nilavembu kudineer choornam:a classical preparation used in the treatment of chikungunya fever显示文摘Objective:To investigate the efficacy of ethanolic extract of nilavembu kudineer choornam (EENKC) in inflammation,pain and fever using animal models to support its actions.Methods: Acute toxicity study of EENKC was performed in mice to fix the effective dose.The antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of EENKC was evaluated in brewer’s yeast induced pyrexia in rats,carrageenan-induced inflammation in rats and acetic-acid induced writhing in mice model.Results:Acute toxicity revealed that EENKC didn’t show death and toxic signs up to 2 000 mg/kg.In brewer’s yeast induced pyrexia and carrageenan-induced inflammation EENKC at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg inhibited fever and inflammation significantly(P<0.01 and<0.05) compared to control animals.In mice,the number of writhing induced by acetic-acid was significantly(P<0.01) reduced after treatment with both the dose of EENKC than control animals. EENKC 200 mg/kg inhibits inflammation higher level in carrageenan-induced paw edema,but there is no significant difference when compared to indomethacin 10 mg/kg.Conclusions:The present findings revealed that EENKC possesses antipyretic,anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity which supports nilavembu kudineer choornam efficacy in chikungunya fever. | Anbarasu K Manisenthil Kumar KT Ramachandran S | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,10: | 2 |
