| 1 | Supplementation with sodium butyrate improves growth and antioxidant function in dairy calves before weaning显示文摘Background: There is increasing research interest in using short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs) including butyrate as potential alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters in animal production. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementation of sodium butyrate(SB) in liquid feeds(milk, milk replacer, and the mixture of both)on the growth performance, rumen fermentation, and serum antioxidant capacity and immunoglobins in dairy calves before weaning. Forty healthy female Holstein calves(4-day-old, 40 ± 5 kg of body weight) were housed in individual hutches and randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatment groups(n = 10 per group) using the RAND function in Excel. The control group was fed no SB(SB0), while the other three groups were supplemented with 15(SB15),30(SB30), or 45(SB45) g/d of SB mixed into liquid feeds offered. The calves were initially fed milk only(days 2 to 20), then a mixture of milk and milk replacer(days 21 to 23), and finally milk replacer only(days 24 to 60).Results: The SB supplementation enhanced growth and improved feed conversion into body weight gain compared with the SB0 group, and the average daily gain increased quadratically with increasing SB supplementation. No significant effect on rumen pH;concentrations of NH_3-N, individual and total VFAs;or acetate:propionate(A:P) ratio was found during the whole experimental period. Serum glutathione peroxidase activity increased linearly with the increased SB supplementation, while the serum concentration of maleic dialdehyde linearly decreased. Serum concentrations of immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, or immunoglobulin M were not affected by the SB supplementation during the whole experimental period.Conclusions: Under the conditions of this study, SB supplementation improved growth performance and antioxidant function in pre-weaned dairy calves. | 2 | A new method for evaluating the drought tolerance of upland rice cultivars显示文摘Worldwide, approximately 27 million ha of rice are grown in upland rather than paddy fields, and is subject to drought stress. To counter this stress, it is desirable to breed new rice cultivars with improved drought tolerance. For breeding purposes, especially for breeding upland rice, it is desirable to develop a simple and accurate method to evaluate rice drought tolerance. We describe a new method that can be used to evaluate efficiently the drought tolerance degree(DTD) of upland rice cultivars, and call it the DTD method.DTD is defined as the mean of the ratios of green leaf length to total leaf length of the top three leaves in every rice seedling after drought treatment, and thus takes values from zero to one. To test whether the DTD method works effectively to evaluate drought tolerance of upland rice cultivars, we determined the DTD values of 13 upland rice cultivars showing varying degrees of drought tolerance in drought-tolerance trials. The idrl-1 mutant, which displayed the strongest drought tolerance of the 13 cultivars as identified by drought-tolerance trials under severe drought stress, had the highest DTD value and297-28, displaying the weakest drought tolerance, had the lowest DTD value. Further analyses of water potential, survival rate, panicles per plant, spikelets per panicle, seed setting rate, yield per plant, and contents of proline, chlorophyll, and malondialdehyde(MDA) indicated that DTD values are in general correlated with the values of these traits,making this new method useful for assessing the drought tolerance of upland rice cultivars.These results show that the DTD method is a simple, direct and relatively accurate evaluation method for drought-tolerance breeding of upland rice. | Xiaofeng Zu Yanke Lu Qianqian Wang Peifeng Chu Wei Miao Huaqi Wang Honggui La | 2017 | The Crop Journal2017,5,6: | 5 |
| 3 | Edge enhancement through scattering media enabled by optical wavefront shaping显示文摘Edge enhancement is a fundamental and important topic in imaging and image processing,as perception of edge is one of the keys to identify and comprehend the contents of an image.Edge enhancement can be performed in many ways,through hardware or computation.Existing methods,however,have been limited in free space or clear media for optical applications;in scattering media such as biological tissue,light is multiple scattered,and information is scrambled to a form of seemingly random speckles.Although desired,it is challenging to accom-plish edge enhancement in the presence of multiple scattering.In this work,we introduce an implementation of optical wavefront shaping to achieve efficient edge enhancement through scattering media by a two-step operation.The first step is to acquire a hologram after the scattering medium,where information of the edge region is accurately encoded,while that of the nonedge region is intentionally encoded with inadequate accuracy.The second step is to decode the edge information by time reversing the scattered light.The capability is demonstrated experimentally,and,further,the performance,as measured by the edge enhancement index(EI)and enhancement-to-noise ratio(ENR),can be controlled easily through tuning the beam ratio.EI and ENR can be reinforced by^8.5 and^263 folds,respectively.To the best of our knowledge,this is the first demonstration that edge information of a spatial pattern can be extracted through strong turbidity,which can potentially enrich the comprehension of actual images obtained from a complex environment. | ZIHAO LI ZHIPENG Yu HUI HUI HUANHAO LI TIANTING ZHONG HONGLIN LU PUXIANG LA | 2020 | Photonics Research2020,8,6: | 4 |
