| 1 | Process Modeling for Heat Treatment: Current Status and Future Developments显示文摘Heat Treating is a critical manufacturing technology. This is particularly true in countries with large manufacturing industry including:; automotive, construction, transportation, and aerospace sectors. Technical advancement of the heat treating industry will be a critical component of the increasing need to remain competitive in this manufacturing sector on a global scale. ASM International has identified the development of process modeling and numerical simulation as a critical technology for the advancement of the heat treating process industry. In this paper, a selective overview of the current accomplishments and future needs of process modeling technologies in heat treatment will be provided. | Tatsuo Inoue, Kiyoshi Funatani and George E. | 2 | Some Investigations on Early Organization of Karst System显示文摘Some investigations on the early organization of karst system are carried out through modeling the dissolution evolution processes of stochastic fracture networks in carbonate rock. It is assumed that water flow in fracture network is laminar, and the dissolution rate process can be described with an empirical equation, The results suggest that a karst system is a self-organization system. It can spontaneously create higher hierarchical level out of a relative homogeneous structure through amplifying the microscopic heterogeneity of initial flow field. Under given boundary conditions, a karst system with initial fracture network of varied hierarchical levels is likely to have stronger tendency to lead to a typical karst system featuring conduit passages than a system with initial network of unique hierarchical level. Through merging local flow systems, a karst system concentrates the limited flow into a few pathways to promote the formation of higher hierarchical level. | Yu Qingchun(Geofront Laboratory, Department of Civil Engineering, Kyoto University, Kyoto 606-8501, Japan)Shen Jifang Wan Junwei(Department of Hydrogeology and Environmental Engineering, China University of Geosciences,Wuhan 430074, China)Ohnishi Yuzo(Geo | 1999 | Journal of Earth Science1999,18,4: | 8 |
| 3 | NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF FORGING AND SUBSEQUENT HEAT TREATMENT OF A ROD BY A FINITE VOLUME METHOD显示文摘A method to simulate processes of forging and subsequent heat treatment of an axial symmetric rod is formulated in eulerian description and the feasibility is investigated. This method uses finite volume mushes for troching material deformation and an automatically refined facet surface to accurately trace the free surface of the deforming material. In the method, the deforming work piece flows through fixed finite volume meshes using eulerian formulation to describe the conservation laws,Fixed finite volume meshing is particularly suitable for large three-dimensional deformation such as forging because remeshing techniques are not required, which are commonly considered to be the main bottelencek in the ssimulations of large defromation by using the finite element method,By means of this finite volume method, an approach has been developed in the framework of 'metallo-thermo-mechanics' to simulate metallic structure, temperature and stress/strain coupled in the heat treatment process. In a first step of simulation, the heat treatment solver is limited in small deformation hypothesis, and un- coupled with forging. The material is considered as elastic-plastic and takes into account of strain, strain rate and temperature effects on the yield stress.Heat generation due to deformation, heat con- duction and thermal stress are considered.Temperature - dependent phase transformation,stress-in- duced phase transformation, latent heat, transformation stress and strain are included. These ap- proaches are implemented into the commerical commercial computer program MSC/SuperForge and a verification example with experimental date is given as comparison. | P. | 5 | LOCAL SCOUR ESTIMATION AT BRIDGE SITE: MODIFICATION AND APPLICATION OF LACEY FORMULA显示文摘In the recent years, it has been established that b/h or h/b (b = length of the structure in the lateral direction and h = approach flow depth) is the dominant factor for the estimation of local scour depth around abutments and piers. One of the major limitations of the Lacey formula is that it predicts only one value of the scour depth for a specific river because of the absence of important parameters b and h. Therefore, its application is quite uncertain for variable b and h. Considering its limitations and experimental facts of flow concentration and shear stress amplification close to above structures, the original Lacey formula is modified introducing the parameters b and h. The applicability of the original as well as modified Lacey formula is tested to the data collected from major rivers in Bangladesh. | Md. | 6 | EPIGENETIC NATURE OF RADIATION CARCINOGENESIS AT LOW DOSES显示文摘The present paradigm of radiation-induced carcinogenesis has been based on somatic mutation theory initiating a mutation in somatic cells derived from DNA damage by ionizing radiation. A non-threshold linear model has been assumed from high doses to low doses. As an alternative to this, we are proposing a new model that epigenetic changes induced by low dose irradiation may be a first step of carcinogenesis. Our preliminary data suggesting the epigenetic nature and reports on various stress response to ionizing radiation are presented. | T. Sugahara and M. WatanabeHealth Research Foundation. | 7 | Genesis of continental seismogenic zone and a new fault zone model显示文摘Experiments were conducted repeatedly on Mannari granite under different temperature and confining pressure conditions. Systematic micro- and submicro-structural and mechanical analyses of granite samples deformed under 1.5 GPa (confining pressure), at 25 ℃-650 ℃ temperatures and at 2×10-6s-1 strain rate show the brittle-ductile deformation microstructures and microstructural associations similar to those observed in naturally deformed crustal rocks and minerals. Brittle fracturing and crystalline plasticity co-exist and react with each other in the brittle-ductile transition domain of the continental lithosphere. The interaction between the different mechanisms in the transitional domain results in the variation of anomalous strength values, which may best explain the genesis of the continental seismogenic zone. A new fault zone model is proposed on the basis of detailed micromechanical and microstructural analyses. | LIU Junlai & M. Shimada1. | 8 | Transformation Plasticity─The Effect on Metallo-Thermo-Mechanical Simulation of Carburized Quenching Process显示文摘Theory of metallo-thermo-mechamics and the developed CAE code offer a powerful tool to simulate residual stresses and distortion during heat treatment processes, in which the transformation plasticity is one of factors to be considered being coupled with stress/strain and metallic structure. It is pointed out in this paper that, especially in the case of carburized quenching, transformation plasticity plays very important role on the distortion, which is verified by axisymmetric finite element, employing heat treatment simulation code 'HEARTS'. Simulated results with the careful consideration on the effect of transformation plasticity reveal to improve remarkably the accuracy of prediction of the displacement and the mode of distortion, compensating the discrepancy between experimental and calculated results. Attention is also paid on the difference in transformation plasticity and conventional plasticity in simulating the volume fraction, stress and strain in ring-shaped specimen during quenching. Moreover some discussions are made on practical use of the effect, and recent experimental results on the coefficient of transformation plasticity are presented. | Shigeru Yamanaka, Takayuki Sakanoue, Toshikazu Yoshii, Tatsuo Inoue 1. | 9 | Zero initial partial derivatives of satellite orbits with respect to force parameters violate the physics of motion of celestial bodies显示文摘Satellite orbits have been routinely used to produce models of the Earth's gravity field. In connection with such productions, the partial derivatives of a satellite orbit with respect to the force parameters to be determined, namely, the unknown harmonic coefficients of the gravitational model, have been first computed by setting the initial values of partial derivatives to zero. In this note, we first design some simple mathematical examples to show that setting the initial values of partial derivatives to zero is generally erroneous mathematically. We then prove that it is prohibited physically. In other words, set-ting the initial values of partial derivatives to zero violates the physics of motion of celestial bodies. | XU PeiLiang Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Uji, Kyoto 611-0011, Japan | 2009 | Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,4: | 2 |
