| 1 | Acute retinal arterial ischemia显示文摘Acute retinal arterial ischemia,which includes transient monocular vision loss(TMVL),branch retinal artery occlusion(BRAO),central retinal artery occlusion(CRAO)and ophthalmic artery occlusion(OAO),is most commonly the consequence of an embolic phenomenon from the ipsilateral carotid artery,heart or aortic arch,leading to partial or complete occlusion of the central retinal artery(CRA)or its branches.Acute retinal arterial ischemia is the ocular equivalent of acute cerebral ischemia and is an ophthalmic and medical emergency.Patients with acute retinal arterial ischemia are at a high risk of having further vascular events,such as subsequent strokes and myocardial infarctions(MIs).Therefore,prompt diagnosis and urgent referral to appropriate specialists and centers is necessary for further work-up(such as brain magnetic resonance imaging with diffusion weighted imaging,vascular imaging,and cardiac monitoring and imaging)and potential treatment of an urgent etiology(e.g.,carotid dissection or critical carotid artery stenosis).Since there are no proven,effective treatments to improve visual outcome following permanent retinal arterial ischemia(central or branch retinal artery occlusion),treatment must focus on secondary prevention measures to decrease the likelihood of subsequent ischemic events. | Michael Dattilo Nancy J.Newman Valérie Biousse | 2018 | Annals of Eye Science2018,,1: | 3 |
| 2 | Poly(ethylene glycol)hydrogel elasticity influences human mesenchymal stem cell behavior显示文摘Coordinated investigations into the interactions between biologically mimicking(biomimetic)material constructs and stem cells advance the potential for the regeneration and possible direct replacement of diseased cells and tissues.Any clinically relevant therapies will require the development and optimization of methods that mass produce fully functional cells and tissues.Despite advances in the design and synthesis of biomaterial scaffolds,one of the biggest obstacles facing tissue engineering is understanding how specific extracellular cues produced by biomaterial scaffolds influence the proliferation and differentiation of various cell sources.Matrix elasticity is one such tailorable property of synthetic scaffolds that is known to differ between tissues.Here,we investigate the interactions between an elastically tailorable polyethylene glycol(PEG)-based hydrogel platform and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(hMSCs).For these studies,two different hydrogel compositions with elastic moduli in the ranges of 50-60 kPa and 8-10 kPa were implemented.Our findings demonstrate that the different elasticities in this platform can produce changes in hMSC morphology and proliferation,indicating that the platform can be implemented to produce changes in hMSC behavior and cell state for a broad range of tissue engineering and regenerative applications.Furthermore,we show that the platform’s different elasticities influence stem cell differentiation potential,particularly when promoting stem cell differentiation toward cell types from tissues with stiffer elasticity.These findings add to the evolving and expanding library of information on stem cell-biomaterial interactions and opens the door for continued exploration into PEG-based hydrogel scaffolds for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. | Anna K.Whitehead Haley H.Barnett Mary E.Caldorera-Moore Jamie J.Newman | 2018 | Regenerative Biomaterials2018,5,3: | 2 |

| 9 | Preliminary age-based life history characteristics of the dogtooth tuna,Gymnosarda unicolor(Ruppell,1838),in the southwest Pacific Ocean显示文摘Dogtooth tuna,Gymnosarda unicolor were sampled off the east coast of Australia(southwest Pacific Ocean)from 2007 to 2012.Ages were determined by examining thin transverse sections of their sagittal otoliths and were based on counts of alternating opaque and translucent zones(annual growth increments).Growth was rapid during the first year of life,after which growth in length was much reduced.Parameters of the constrained von Bertalanffy growth function(fork length-at-age)were L∞=1164.77(mm,FL)and K=0.44 year^(-1).Preliminary estimates of longevity indicate a maximum observed age of at least 20 years.There was a high degree of variation in the observed length and age of sexual maturity for G.unicolor.Despite this variation,the size at 50%maturity for female G.unicolor estimated in this study was 713 mm FL(<2 years of age).The diet of G.unicolor is very broad and covers a range of fish species.The life history characteristics of G.unicolor overall,indicate that this species may be somewhat resilient to fishing.However,reports of localised depletions,in association with heavy targeting by sports fishers,low effective population sizes and patchy recruitment indicate that this species is particularly vulnerable to overfishing. | David J.Welch Adam K.Smith Kyne Krusic-Golub Sandra Erdmann Stephen J.Newman | 2023 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2023,8,3: | 0 |
