Application of the New Gene Gm6 Against Rice GallMidge in Resistance Breeding Through PCR-BasedMarker Aided Selection显示文摘The research results of marker aided selection (MAS) for resistant varieties and lines against rice gall midge Orseolia oryzae Wood-Mason successfully in 1999-2002 were reported in the present paper. The molecular markers linked to the gene Gm6 against rice gall midge were used to select and breed the resistant varieties and lines. The RAPD marker OPM06 was used to verify the existence actually of gene Gm6 in ten developed varieties resistant to gall midge such as Duokang1, Duokang2, Kangwen2, Kangwen3, Kangwen5, Duokangzaozhan, Kangwenqinzhan, which were derived from Daqiuqi. For resistance breeding through PCRbased marker aided selection (MAS), the polymorphisms in the resistant and susceptible parents were identified by RG476/AluⅠ and RG476/ScaⅠ respectively. The RAPD marker OPM06 (1.4 kb) was used to identify 15 new resistance lines from F3 lines of Fengyinzhan1/Daqiuqi in 1999. 21 and 7 resistance lines were selected from F4 and F6 lines of KWQZ/Gui99 (restored line of hybrid rice) using RG476/AluⅠin 2000-2001 respectively. The Gm6 gene was transferred into the restored line of hybrid rice. In 2001-2002, RG214/HhaⅠ and G214/ScaⅠ were used for selecting 11 and 5 resistance lines from F3 lines of KWQZ/IR56 and AXZ/KWQZ successfully. The application of the resistance gene through PCR-based marker aided selection is a new and effective approach in resistance breeding. | LIHong XIEZhen-wen ZHOUShao-chuan S.K.Katiyar S.Constantino J.Bennett HUANGBing-chao XIAOHan-xiang LULi-hua ZHANGYang | 2003 | Agricultural Sciences in China2003,2,8: | 1

Identification of QTL and underlying genes for root system architecture associated with nitrate nutrition in hexaploid wheat显示文摘The root system architecture(RSA) of a crop has a profound effect on the uptake of nutrients and consequently the potential yield. However, little is known about the genetic basis of RSA and resource adaptive responses in wheat(Triticum aestivum L.). Here, a high-throughput germination paper-based plant phenotyping system was used to identify seedling traits in a wheat doubled haploid mapping population, Savannah×Rialto. Significant genotypic and nitrate-N treatment variation was found across the population for seedling traits with distinct trait grouping for root size-related traits and root distribution-related traits. Quantitative trait locus(QTL) analysis identified a total of 59 seedling trait QTLs. Across two nitrate treatments, 27 root QTLs were specific to the nitrate treatment. Transcriptomic analyses for one of the QTLs on chromosome 2 D, which was found under low nitrate conditions, revealed gene enrichment in N-related biological processes and 28 differentially expressed genes with possible involvement in a root angle response. Together, these findings provide genetic insight into root system architecture and plant adaptive responses to nitrate, as well as targets that could help improve N capture in wheat. | Marcus GRIFFITHS Jonathan A.ATKINSON Laura-Jayne GARDINER Ranjan SWARUP Michael P.POUND Michael H.WILSON Malcolm J.BENNETT Darren M.WELLS | 2022 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2022,21,4: | 0
Effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement, psychosocial functioning, and physical fitness:A multi-country cluster randomized controlled trial显示文摘Purpose:To examine the effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement, psychosocial functioning, and physical fitness in children aged 7-8 years. Methods:Twenty schools in 5 different European countries(2 second-grade classrooms per school)participated in a cluster randomized controlled trial(Sport at School trial).Participants were assigned to either a control group, which continued with their habitual physical education lessons,or to an intervention group, which replaced these lessons with a 1-year karate intervention(Karate Mind and Movement program).A total of 721 children(344 girls and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 years old, mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 were assigned to the control group and intervention group, respectively.Outcomes included academic performance(average grade),psychosocial functioning(Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for parents),and different markers of physical fitness(cardiorespiratory fitness, balance, and flexibility). Results:The intervention provided small but significant benefits compared to the control group for academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct problems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),cardiorespiratory fitness(d=0.36;p<0.001),and balance(d=0.24;p=0.015).There was a trend towards significant benefits for flexibility(d=0.24;p=0.056).No significant benefits were observed for other variables, including psychosocial difficulties, emotional symptoms,hyperactivity/inattention,peer problems,or prosocial behaviour(all p>0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year school-based karate intervention was effective in improving academic achievement, conduct problems, and physical fitness in primary school children. The results support the inclusion of karate during physical education lessons. | Tania Pinto-Escalona Erica Gobbi Pedro L.Valenzuela Simon J.Bennett Pierluigi Aschieri Manuel Martin-Loeches Antonio Paoli Oscar Martinez-de-Quel | 2024 | Journal of Sport and Health Science2024,13,1: | 0
Wastewater surveillance provides 10-days forecasting of COVID-19 hospitalizations superior to cases and test positivity:A prediction study显示文摘Background:The public health response to COVID-19 has shifted to reducing deaths and hospitalizations to prevent overwhelming health systems. The amount of SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragments in wastewater are known to correlate with clinical data including cases and hospital admissions for COVID-19.We developed and tested a predictive model for incident COVID-19 hospital admissions in New York State using wastewater data. Methods:Using county-level COVID-19 hospital admissions and wastewater surveillance covering 13.8 million people across 56 counties,we fit a generalized linear mixed model predicting new hospital admissions from wastewater concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA from April 29,2020 to June 30,2022.We included covariates such as COVID-19 vaccine coverage in the county, comorbidities, demographic variables, and holiday gatherings.Findings:Wastewater concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA correlated with new hospital admissions per 100,000 up to ten days prior to admission.Models that included wastewater had higher predictive power than models that included clinical cases only, increasing the accuracy of the model by 15%.Predicted hospital admissions correlated highly with observed admissions(r¼0.77)with an average difference of 0.013 hospitalizations per 100,000(95%CI¼[0.002,0.025])Interpretation:Using wastewater to predict future hospital admissions from COVID-19 is accurate and effective with superior results to using case data alone. The lead time of ten days could alert the public to take precautions and improve resource allocation for seasonal surges. | Dustin T.Hill Mohammed A.Alazawi E.Joe Moran Lydia J.Bennett Ian Bradley Mary B.Collins Christopher J.Gobler Hyatt Green Tabassum Z.Insaf Brittany Kmush Dana Neigel Shailla Raymond Mian Wang Yinyin Ye David A.Larsen | 2023 | Infectious Disease Modelling2023,8,4: | 0
