3Removal of lead and cadmium ions by single and binary systems using phytogenic magnetic nanoparticles functionalized by 3-marcaptopropanic acid显示文摘The present research study is focused on green fabrication of superparamagnetic Phytogenic Magnetic Nanoparticles(PMNPs), and then its surface functionalization with 3-Mercaptopropionic acid(3-MPA). The resulting material(i.e. 3-MPA@PMNPs) characterized by FTIR, powder XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, VSM, BET and TGA techniques and then further employed for the investigation of the adsorptive removal of lead(Pb^2+) and cadmium(Cd^2+) ions from aqueous solutions in single and binary systems. The material showed fastest adsorptive rate(98.23%) for Pb^2+ and(96.5%) Cd2+within the contact time of 60 min at pH 6.5 in the single system. The experimental data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm, indicated monolayer adsorption of both metal ions onto 3-MPA@PMNPs and an estimated comparable adsorptive capacity of 68.41 mg·g^-1(Pb2+) and 79.8 mg·g^-1(Cd2+) at p H 6.5. However, kinetic data agreed well with pseudo-second-order model, and indicated that the removal mainly supported chemisorption and/or ion-exchange mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters such asΔGo,ΔHo, and ΔSo, were-3259.20, 119.35 and 20.73 for Pb^2+, and-1491.10, 45.441 and 7.87 for Cd^2+ at temperature 298.15 K, confirmed that adsorption was endothermic, spontaneous and favorable. The material demonstrated higher selectivity of Pb2+ and its removal efficiency was(98.20 ± 0.3)% in binary system experiments. The material persisted performance up-to seven(07) consecutive treatment cycles without losing their stability and offered comparable fastest magnetic separation(35 s) from aqueous solutions. 10Socio-Economic Drivers of Deforestation in Roghani Valley,Hindu-Raj Mountains,Northern Pakistan显示文摘Deforestation and associated ecological disturbances are the issues of global concern.Researchers have investigated a number of driving forces which accelerate the rate of deforestation at local and regional levels.These include poverty,population growth,market demand and prices,political instability,agricultural expansion and changes in property right and ownership regimes.This paper seeks to explore the impacts of population growth,changing tenure system and other socioeconomic factors on the forest cover of Roghani Valley,located in Hindu Raj Mountains,Northern Pakistan.The present study is mainly based on information collected through participatory observation,selfadministered interviews and questionnaire survey.Geographical Information System(GIS) database is also used for mapping and quantification.The results reveal that in the past three to four decades the study area has been subjected to severe deforestation and about half of the forest area has been converted into barren land.Thus,the area under natural forests decreased from 2099 to 1444 hectares in four decades.This large-scale deforestation is attributed to both proximate and under lying causes particularly traditional land tenure system and demographic development.Consequently,forest resources have been degraded and a number of plant species have disappeared from the forests of the study area while several others are in the process of disappearance.Fazlur RAHMAN Fazlul HAQ Iffat TABASSUM Ihsan ULLAH 2014Journal of Mountain Science2014,11,1:1

16Forest cover dynamics in Palas Valley Kohistan, Hindu Kush-Himalayan Mountains, Pakistan显示文摘Forest cover change in the mountainous region is driven by a variety of anthropogenic and natural factors.The Hindu Kush-Himalayan Mountains has experienced a considerable vegetation cover change due to intensive human activities,such as population growth,proximate causes,accessibility,unstable political situations,government policy failure and poverty.The present study seeks to find out the impact of population growth and road network expansion on forest cover of Palas valley based on remotely sensed data and employing geospatial techniques.Changes in forest cover were determined by classifying time-series satellite images of Landsat and Sentinel 2 A.The images of October 1980,2000,2010 and 2017 were classified into six land cover classes and then the impact of population growth and accessibility on forest cover was analyzed.Furthermore,forest cover and land-use change detection map was prepared using classified images of 1980 and 2017.The data were collected mainly from field visits(ground verification),census reports,Communication and Works Department,Kohistan.Satellite imageries were obtained from the United States Geological Survey’s websites and classified in ERDAS imagine 2014 and ESRI ArcGIS 10.2.1 using supervised classification-maximum likelihood algorithm.Result of this study revealed that a substantial reduction in forest cover has taken place mainly in the proximity of human settlements.On the average,during the study period,annually more than 460 hectares of forest area has been converted into other uses.Noor ul HAQ Fazlur RAHMAN Iffat TABASSUM MEHRAN 2021Journal of Mountain Science2021,18,2:0
17Alendronate and FTI-277 combination as a possible therapeutic approach for hepatocellular carcinoma:An in vitro study显示文摘Background: An important product of mevalonate pathway is downstream synthesis of isoprenoid units that has long been implicated in development and progression of tumor. It has been speculated that inhibition of protein prenylation might be therapeutically beneficial. The objective of current study was to evaluate antitumor potential of a novel therapeutic combination of mevalonate pathway inhibitors, FTI-277 and alendronate. We also examined differentially expressed proteins in response to treatment using proteomics approach.Methods: Huh-7 cells were incubated with different concentrations of FTI-277 alone and in combination with alendronate. Differential protein and gene expression was examined through two dimensional gel electrophoresis and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(q PCR), respectively. Proteins were identified using tandem mass spectrometry analysis.Results: Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) cell line with FTI-277 alone showed cell death in a time and dose dependent manner while in combination with alendronate, a synergistic apoptotic effect at 24 h was observed. Proteomic studies on the 20 μmol/L FTI-277 and 5 μmol/L alendronate +20 μmol/L FTI-277 treated cells revealed altered expression of different proteins including peroxiredoxin 2(Prx2),glutathione S transferase 1(GSTP1), Rho GTPase activating protein(Rho GAP), triosephosphate isomerase(TPI), and heat shock protein 60(HSP60). Down-regulated expression of Prx2 and GSTP1 in treated cells was also confirmed by real-time q PCR analysis.Conclusions: Combined treatment of FTI-277 and alendronate on Huh-7 HCC cells showed cell death suggesting their anticancer potential. 18Dynamics of Communal Land Degradation and Its Implications in the Arid Mountains of Pakistan:A Study of District Karak, Khyber Pakhtunkuwa显示文摘Similar to other areas of Pakistan, land resources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KP) is kept under various ownership regimes for socio-economic and ecological benefits. For the last three to four decades, communal lands and resources are subjected to high rate of degradation and deterioration, which is leading to multifarious socio-economical and ecological implications. This paper intends to look into factors that are responsible for the degradation of communal land and the adaptability of the management mechanisms developed by the local inhabitants to conserve these resources. Moreover, this study also explores the sustainability of these adopted strategies in present circumstances. Data regarding socio-economic parameters of the inhabitants and their interactions with communal lands were collected through questionnaire cum interview method. As long-term climatic data for the area do not exist therefore focus group discussions were conducted to document the changing trend in rainfall regimes and temperature variations for the last about four decades. Results indicate that communal lands are highly vulnerable to degradation due to biophysical and anthropogenic factors. Local inhabitants have developed suitable measures to control the situation, however, accelerated socioeconomic transformations in the area have weakened the role of local institutions and that led to further degradation of these resources. 19Anti-aging Related Activities and Health Benefits of Licochalcone A:A Review显示文摘Background:Licochalcone A(LCA)is a flavonoid derived from the roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.ex DC and other related plants.Its natural source has been extensively used in complementary medicine,especially traditional Chinese medicine,to treat various ailments.Identified as a phenolic chalcone compound,LCA has gained significant attention in recent years due to its various pharmacological properties.Objective:The objective of this review article is to assess the anti-aging ralated pharmacological properties of LCA.Method:An exhaustive search of several scientific databases was conducted using various relevant keywords to write this review article on LCA,focusing on its therapeutic applications and anti-aging-related pharmacological activities.Some inclusion and exclusion criteria were strictly followed to retrieve updated relevant articles.Results:A collection of 292 papers were screened,and 131 were included in this review for an in-depth analysis of Licochalcone A,focusing on its anti-aging-related pharmacological activities and relevant mechanisms,and its toxicity and side effects.Moreover,the potential of LCA as a pharmacological product is discussed,emphasizing its health benefits and potential as a pharmaceutical product.Conclusion:These findings indicate that Licochalcone A is a promising natural therapeutic agent for anti-aging therapy and other ailments.Iffat Ara Rita Turcio Tasmia Islam Md.Sabbir Hossain Md.Kamrul Hasan 2024Clinical Complementary Medicine and Pharmacology2024,4,1:0
20Perceived barriers and primary care access experiences among immigrant Bangladeshi men in Canada显示文摘Objective The study aimed to explore the experience of male members of a rapidly grown community of Bangladeshi immigrants while accessing primary healthcare(PHC)services in Canada.Design A qualitative research was conducted among a sample of Bangladeshi immigrant men through a community-based participatory research approach.Focus group discussions were conducted to collect the qualitative data where thematic analysis was applied.Setting The focus group discussions were held in various community centres such as individual meeting rooms at public libraries,community halls and so on arranged in collaboration with community organisations while ensuring complete privacy.Participant Thirty-eight adults,Bangladeshi immigrant men,living in Calgary were selected for this study and participated in six different focus groups.The sample represents mostly married,educated,Muslim,Bangla speaking,aged over 25 years,full-time or self-employed and living in an urban centre in Canada>5 years.Result The focus groups have highlighted long wait time as an important barrier.Long wait at the emergency room,difficulties to get access to general physicians when feeling sick,slow referral process and long wait at the clinic even after making an appointment impact their daily chores,work and access to care.Language is another important barrier that impedes effective communication between physicians and immigrant patients,thus the quality of care.Unfamiliarity with the healthcare system and lack of resources were also voiced that hinder access to healthcare for immigrant Bangladeshi men in Canada.However,no gender-specific barriers unique to men have been identified in this study.Conclusion The barriers to accessing PHC services for Bangladeshi immigrant men are similar to that of other visible minority immigrants.It is important to recognise the extent of barriers across various immigrant groups to effectively shape public policy and improve access to PHC.Tanvir C Turin Ruksana Rashid Mahzabin Ferdous Iffat Naeem Nahid Rumana Afsana Rahman Nafiza Rahman Mohammad Lasker 2020Family Medicine and Community Health2020,8,4:0
