1Interdecadal change of summer precipitation over Eastern China around the late-1990s and associated circulation anomalies,internal dynamical causes显示文摘Observational study indicated that the summer precipitation over Eastern China experienced a notable interdecadal change around the late-1990s. Accompanying this interdecadal change, the dominant mode of anomalous precipitation switched from a meridional triple pattern to a dipole pattern, showing a 'south-flood-north-drought' structure (with the exception of the Yangtze River Valley). This interdecadal change of summer precipitation over Eastern China was associated with circulation anomalies in the middle/upper troposphere over East Asia, such as changes in winds and corresponding divergence, vertical motion and moisture transportation (divergence), which all exhibit remarkable meridional dipole structures. Furthermore, on the internal dynamic and thermodynamic aspects, the present study investigated the influence of the midtroposphere zonal and meridional flow changes over East Asia on the interdecadal change around the late-1990s. Results suggested that, during 1999-2010, the East Asia subtropical westerly jet weakened and shifted poleward, forming a meridional dipole feature in anomalous zonal flow. This anomalous zonal flow, on one hand, induced changes in three teleconnection patterns over the Eurasian continent, namely the 'Silk Road' pattern along the subtropical upper troposphere westerly jet, the East Asia/Pacific (EAP) pattern along the East Asian coast, and the Eurasia (EU) pattern along the polar jet; on the other hand, it brought about cold advection over Northern China, and warm advection over Southern China in the mid-troposphere. 3Advances in studying interactions between aerosols and monsoon in China显示文摘Scientific issues relevant to interactions between aerosols and the Asian monsoon climate were discussed and evaluated at the 33 rd 'Forum of Science and Technology Frontiers' sponsored by the Department of Earth Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Major results are summarized in this paper. The East Asian monsoon directly affects aerosol transport and provides a favorable background circulation for the occurrence and development of persistent fog-haze weather. Spatial features of aerosol transport and distribution are also influenced by the East Asian monsoon on seasonal, inter-annual, and decadal scales. High moisture levels in monsoon regions also affect aerosol optical and radiative properties. Observation analyses indicate that cloud physical properties and precipitation are significantly affected by aerosols in China with aerosols likely suppressing local light and moderate rainfall, and intensifying heavy rainfall in southeast coastal regions. However, the detailed mechanisms behind this pattern still need further exploration. The decadal variation in the East Asian monsoon strongly affects aerosol concentrations and their spatial patterns. The weakening monsoon circulation in recent decades has likely helped to increase regional aerosol concentrations. The substantial increase in Chinese air pollutants has likely decreased the temperature difference between land and sea, which favors intensification of the weakening monsoon circulation. 4Response of water budget to recent climatic changes in the source region of the Yellow River显示文摘Discharge in the source region of the Yellow River significantly declined after 1990.China Meteorological Administration(CMA) data show that precipitation in this region was low in the 1990s but returned to above normal after 2002;in recent decades there has been rapid warming of surface air,moistening and wind speed decrease.To investigate the influences of recent climatic changes on the water budget,this study simulates the surface water budget at CMA stations within and surrounding the source region during 1960-2006,using an improved land surface model.Results indicate that the spatial pattern of precipitation change is an important factor(except for precipitation amount and intensity) in determining the response of runoff to precipitation changes.Low runoff in the 1990s was consistent with precipitation amount and intensity.The recovery of precipitation after 2002 is mainly from increased precipitation in the dry area of the source region.Evaporation was mainly limited by water availability in this dry area,and thus most of the precipitation increase was evaporated.By contrast,energy availability was a more important influence on evaporation in the wet area.There was more evaporation in the wet area because of rapid warming,although precipitation amount partly decreased and partly increased,contributing to the reduction of runoff after 2002.This control on evaporation and its response,together with the modified spatial pattern of precipitation,produced a water budget unfavorable for runoff generation in the source region during recent years.ZHOU DeGang HUANG RongHui 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,17:12
5Great progress in study on aerosol and its impact on the global environment显示文摘The transport from atmosphere is a more important pathway than that from rivers for certain elements and compounds in the remote ocean. The desert and those arid/semi-arid areas in the northwest of China and the Loess Plateau are the sources of those aerosols over the Pacific. Atmospheric iron is the limiting factor of the productivity in certain ocean regions. The dust storms must now be seen as repeated sources of pollution elements as well as soil elements to the East China Sea and, farther out, to the North Pacific Ocean and even to the USA. The long-range transport of aerosols, especially the dust storm, from China and the positive feedbacks of iron coupled with sulfur in atmosphere might be one of the important mechanisms that would affect the primary productivity in the Pacific and/or the global climate change and deserve to be further studied. 6Development of Light Cycle Oil(LCO) Hydrocracking Technology over a Commercial W-Ni Based Catalyst显示文摘Because of its high density and low cetane number, the light cycle oil(LCO) containing heavy aromatics(60%—80%) can hardly be transformed through the conventional hydro-upgrading technology. In this report, a novel LCO hydrocracking technology(FD2G) was proposed for the utilization of LCO to manufacture high value-added products. Through the ingenious combination of hydroprocessing catalyst and the hydrocracking process, the high octane gasoline and the ultra-low sulfur diesel(ULSD) blendstocks were produced simultaneously. The influence of catalyst type, reaction temperature, pressure, respectively, on the research octane number(RON) of produced gasoline was studied in a fixed bed hydrogenation reactor. It indicated that high reaction temperature and medium pressure would favor the production of highoctane gasoline through the conversion of bi-aromatic and tri-aromatic hydrocarbons. The typical results of FD2 G technology on commercial units showed that it could produce clean diesel with a sulfur content of less than 10 μg/g and clean gasoline with a research octane number(RON) of up to 92. 7Characterization of turbulent flux transfer over a Gobi surface with quality-controlled observations显示文摘This study evaluates the spatial distributions in the quality of momentum and sensible heat fluxes,and determines the turbulent transfer characteristics with quality-controlled observations.The research is based on raw turbulence data collected over a Gobi surface in the Dunhuang area in June 2004.The results indicate that part of the momentum fluxes are of poor quality in the daytime and nighttime.The poor quality of the momentum fluxes in the daytime is mainly attributed to the development of turbulence.The footprint reveals that,in general,the momentum fluxes and sensible heat fluxes can be measured well in the east and west upwind sectors under unstable conditions.The relationship between the non-dimensional standard deviation of the wind components and atmospheric stability follow the '1/3 power law',which supports the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory.Moreover,this study identifies a clear disturbance in the measurements surrounding the Gobi surface.The momentum roughness length of z0m=0.59 mm is determined after excluding such disturbance,and the additional resistance during the daytime is proposed to be an average of 3.1,although its actual value is highly scattered.This study discusses the applicability of several thermodynamic parameterization schemes for the Gobi surface.The results show that the scheme κB-1=3.1 can represent well the summer diurnal turbulent heat transfer.ZHOU DeGang HUANG RongHui 2011Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,5:9
8A primary study of the correlation between the net air-sea heat flux and the interannual variation of western North Pacific tropical cyclone track and intensity显示文摘A singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis is carried out to reveal the relationship between the interannual variation of track and intensity of the western North Pacific tropical cyclones (WNPTCs) in the tropical cyclone (TC) active season (July-November) and the global net air-sea heat flux (Q net ) in the preceding season (April-June). For this purpose, a tropical cyclone track and intensity function (TIF) is defined by a combination of accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index and a cyclone track density function. The SVD analysis reveals that the first mode is responsible for the positive correlation between the upward heat flux in the tropical central Pacific and the increased activity of western North Pacific (WNP) TIF, the second mode for the positive correlation between the upward heat flux in the North Indian Ocean and the northeastward track shift of WNPTCs and the third mode for the negative correlation between the upward heat flux in mid-latitude central Pacific and the northwest displacement of the WNP TC-active center. 9Sensitivity of ENSO Variability to Pacific Freshwater Flux Adjustment in the Community Earth System Model显示文摘The effects of freshwater flux(FWF) on modulating ENSO have been of great interest in recent years. Large FWF bias is evident in Coupled General Circulation Models(CGCMs), especially over the tropical Pacific where large precipitation bias exists due to the so-called 'double ITCZ' problem. By applying an empirical correction to FWF over the tropical Pacific, the sensitivity of ENSO variability is investigated using the new version(version 1.0) of the NCAR's Community Earth System Model(CESM1.0), which tends to overestimate the interannual variability of ENSO accompanied by large FWF into the ocean. In response to a small adjustment of FWF, interannual variability in CESM1.0 is reduced significantly,with the amplitude of FWF being reduced due to the applied adjustment part whose sign is always opposite to that of the original FWF field. Furthermore, it is illustrated that the interannual variability of precipitation weakens as a response to the reduced interannual variability of SST. Process analysis indicates that the interannual variability of SST is damped through a reduced FWF–salt–density–mixing–SST feedback, and also through a reduced SST–wind–thermocline feedback. 10Recent Advances in Monsoon Studies in China显示文摘This review provides a synopsis of the major progress that has been made in monsoon studies in China and to further bridge the gap between the Chinese and international meteorological community. It consists of seven major sections. After the introduction, the second section begins with the global monsoon systems and their seasonal variation, based on some new methods proposed in recent years. Besides, some major intraseasonal features of East Asian monsoon, including the onset of South China Sea summer monsoon are discussed. In the third section, we review the interactions between ENSO and the East Asian monsoon, focusing in particular on the results of Chinese meteorologists that indicate the influence of ENSO on the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) is obviously different from that on the tropical monsoon. Besides the tropical Pacific,other ocean basins, such as the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, are also important to the East Asian monsoon, and this topic is discussed in the fourth section. In the fifth section, we address the role of land surface processes in East Asian monsoon. For example, we describe work that has shown more snow cover in spring on the Tibetan Plateau is followed by a weakened EASM and more summer rainfall in the Yangtze River valleys. The sixth section focuses on the influence of atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere(SH) on EASM, demonstrating how the signal from the SH is likely to provide new clues for the seasonal forecasting of summer rainfall in China. Finally, in the seventh section, we concentrate on the interdecadal variations of EASM. 11Arctic sea ice bordering on the North Atlantic and inter-annual climate variations显示文摘Variations of winter Arctic sea ice bordering on the North Atlantic are closely related to climate variations in the same region. When winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index is positive (negative) anomaly phase, Icelandic Low is obviously deepened and shifts northwards (southwards). Simultaneously, the Subtropical High over the North Atlantic is also intensified, and moves northwards (southwards). Those anomalies strengthen (weaken) westerly between Icelandic Low and the Subtropical High, and further result in positive (negative) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the mid-latitude of the North Atlantic, and increase (decrease) the warm water transportation from the mid-latitude to the Barents Sea, which causes positive (negative) mixed-layer water temperature anomalies in the south part of the Barents Sea. 12Effect of fluxes on synthesis and luminescence properties of BaSi_2O_2N_2:Eu^(2+) oxynitride phosphors显示文摘Eu^(2+) activated BaSi_2 O_2 N_2 oxynitride bluish-green phosphor was synthesized adopting conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction method, in which BaF_2, Na_2 CO_3 and NH_4 Cl were used as the fluxes.The phase formation, size distribution and microscopic morphology were characterized to investigate the influence of adding fluxes on photo luminescence properties. The results indicate that with the addition of BaF_2 flux, the particle morphology becomes regular and size distribution narrows and the phase purity of BaSi_2 O_2 N_2:Eu^(2+) phosphor can be improved effectively. The photoluminescence intensity of BaSi_2 O_2 N_2:Eu^(2+) phosphor with BaF_2 as flux gets enhanced obviously, which is much higher than that of Na_2 CO_3, NH_4 Cl and without flux. The optimum content of BaF2 flux is 4 wt%, and the maximum photoluminescence intensity of the BaSi_2 O_2 N_2:Eu^(2+) phosphor prepared with BaF_2 flux rises to 141%,meanwhile, the phosphors with BaF_2 flux exhibits low thermal quenching. 13Lag influences of winter circulation conditions in the tropical western Pacific on South Asian summer monsoon显示文摘By means of monthly mean NCEP/NCAR data analyses, this note investigates the lag influences of winter circulation conditions in the tropical western Pacific on South Asian summer monsoon through the methods of composite, correlation and statistical confident test. The results indicate clearly that winter climate variations in the equatorial western Pacific would produce significant influences on the following South Asian summer monsoon, and with the lapse of time the lag influences show clearly moving northward and extending westward features. When winter positive (negative) sea level pressure anomalies occupy the equatorial western Pacific, there is an anticyclonic (cyclonic) circulation anomaly appearing in the northwestern Pacific. 14Differences and Links between the East Asian and South Asian Summer Monsoon Systems:Characteristics and Variability显示文摘This paper analyzes the differences in the characteristics and spatio–temporal variabilities of summertime rainfall and water vapor transport between the East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) and South Asian summer monsoon(SASM) systems. The results show obvious differences in summertime rainfall characteristics between these two monsoon systems. The summertime rainfall cloud systems of the EASM show a mixed stratiform and cumulus cloud system, while cumulus cloud dominates the SASM. These differences may be caused by differences in the vertical shear of zonal and meridional circulations and the convergence of water vapor transport fluxes. Moreover, the leading modes of the two systems' summertime rainfall anomalies also differ in terms of their spatiotemporal features on the interannual and interdecadal timescales. Nevertheless, several close links with respect to the spatiotemporal variabilities of summertime rainfall and water vapor transport exist between the two monsoon systems. The first modes of summertime rainfall in the SASM and EASM regions reveal a significant negative correlation on the interannual and the interdecadal timescales. This close relationship may be linked by a meridional teleconnection in the regressed summertime rainfall anomalies from India to North China through the southeastern part over the Tibetan Plateau, which we refer to as the South Asia/East Asia teleconnection pattern of Asian summer monsoon rainfall. 16Joint tracking and classification of extended targets with complex shapes显示文摘This paper addresses the problem of joint tracking and classification(JTC) of a single extended target with a complex shape. To describe this complex shape, the spatial extent state is first modeled by star-convex shape via a random hypersurface model(RHM), and then used as feature information for target classification. The target state is modeled by two vectors to alleviate the influence of the high-dimensional state space and the severely nonlinear observation model on target state estimation, while the Euclidean distance metric of the normalized Fourier descriptors is applied to obtain the analytical solution of the updated class probability. Consequently, the resulting method is called the 'JTC-RHM method.' Besides, the proposed JTC-RHM is integrated into a Bernoulli filter framework to solve the JTC of a single extended target in the presence of detection uncertainty and clutter, resulting in a JTC-RHM-Ber filter. Specifically, the recursive expressions of this filter are derived.
