| 1 | Role of live microbial feed supplements with reference to anaerobic fungi in ruminant productivity: A review显示文摘To keep the concept of a safe food supply to the consumers, animal feed industries world over are showing an increasing interest in the direct-fed microbials(DFM) for improved animal performance in terms of growth or productivity. This becomes all the more essential in a situation, where a number of the residues of antibiotics and/or other growth stimulants reach in milk and meat with a number of associated potential risks for the consumers. Hence, in the absence of growth stimulants, a positive manipulation of the rumen microbial ecosystem to enhance the feedstuff utilization for improved production efficiency by ruminants has become of much interest to the researchers and entrepreneurs. A few genera of live microbes(i.e., bacteria, fungi and yeasts in different types of formulations from paste to powder) are infrequently used as DFM for the domestic ruminants. These DFM products are live microbial feed supplements containing naturally occurring microbes in the rumen. Among different DFM possibilities, anaerobic rumen fungi(ARF) based additives have been found to improve ruminant productivity consistently during feeding trials. Administration of ARF during the few trials conducted, led to the increased weight gain, milk production, and total tract digestibility of feed components in ruminants. Anaerobic fungi in the rumen display very strong cell-wall degrading cellulolytic and xylanolytic activities through rhizoid development, resulting in the physical disruption of feed structure paving the way for bacterial action. Significant improvements in the fiber digestibility were found to coincide with increases in ARF in the rumen indicating their role. Most of the researches based on DFM have indicated a positive response in nutrient digestion and methane reducing potential during in vivo and/or in vitro supplementation of ARF as DFM. Therefore, DFM especially ARF will gain popularity but it is necessary that all the strains are thoroughly studied for their beneficial properties to have a confirmed ‘generally regarded as safe' status for ruminants. | Anil K Puniya Abdelfattah Z M Salem Sanjay Kumar Sumit S Dagar Gareth W Griffith Monica Puniya Sreenivas R Ravella Nikhil Kumar Tejpal Dhewa Ravinder Kumar | 2015 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2015,14,3: | 17 |
| 2 | Why interleukin-10 supplementation does not work in Crohn's disease patients显示文摘Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis are chronic intestina disorders, which are on the increase in 'Westernised' countries. IBD can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an immunoregulatory cytokine that has been identified as being involved in several diseases including IBD. Studies have shown that polymorphisms in the promoter region reduce serum levels of IL-10 and this reduction has been associated with some forms of IBD. Mouse models have shown promising results with IL-10 supplementation, as such IL-10 supplementation has been touted as being a possible alternative treatment for CD in humans. Clinical trials have shown that recombinant human IL-10 is safe and well tolerated up to a dose o 8 μg/kg. However, to date, the results of the clinica trials have been disappointing. Although CD activity was reduced as measured by the CD activity index IL-10 supplementation did not result in significantly reduced remission rates or clinical improvements when compared to placebo. This review discusses why IL-10supplementation is not effective in CD patients currently and what can be addressed to potentially make IL-10 supplementation a more viable treatment option in the future. Based on the current research we conclude that IL-10 supplementation is not a one size fits all treatment and if the correct population of patients is chosen then IL-10 supplementation could be of benefit. | Gareth J Marlow Dominique van Gent Lynnette R Ferguson | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,25: | 9 |

| 6 | Robotic surgery of the pancreas显示文摘Pancreatic surgery is one of the most challenging and complex fields in general surgery. While minimally invasive surgery has become the standard of care for many intra-abdominal pathologies the overwhelming majority of pancreatic surgery is performed in an open fashion. This is attributed to the retroperitoneal location of the pancreas, its intimate relationship to major vasculature and the complexity of reconstruction in the case of pancreatoduodenectomy.Herein,we describe the application of robotic technology to minimally invasive pancreatic surgery. The unique capabilities of the robotic platform have made the minimally invasive approach feasible and safe with equivalent if not better outcomes(e.g.,decreased length of stay, less surgical site infections)to conventional open surgery. However,it is unclear whether the robotic approach is truly superior to traditional laparoscopy;this is a key point given the substantial costs associated with procuring and maintaining robotic capabilities. | Daniel Joyce Gareth Morris-Stiff Gavin A Falk Kevin El-Hayek Sricharan Chalikonda R Matthew Walsh | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,40: | 2 |

| 13 | Lymphoepithelial cysts of the pancreas:a management dilemma显示文摘Pancreatic lymphoepithelial cysts(LECs) are rare, benign lesions that are typically unexpected post-operative pathological findings. We aimed to review clinical, radiological and pathological features of LECs that may allow their preoperative diagnosis. Histopathology databases of two large pancreatic units were searched to identify LECs and notes reviewed to determine patient demographic details, mode of presentation, investigations, treatment and outcome. Five male and one female patients were identified. Their median age was 60 years. Lesions were identified on computed tomography performed for abdominal pain in two patients, and were incidentally observed in four patients. Five LECs were located in the tail and one in the body of the pancreas, with a median cyst size of 5 cm. Obtaining cyst fluid was difficult and a largely acellular aspirate was yielded. The pre-operative diagnosis was mucinous cystic neoplasm in all patients. This series of patients were treated distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. A retrospective review of radiological examinations suggested that LECs have a relatively low signal on T2 imaging and a high signal intensity on T1 weighted images. LECs appear more common in elderly males, and are typically incidental, large, unilocular cysts. Close attention to signal intensity on MRI may allow preoperative diagnosis of these lesions. | Julie Martin Keith J Roberts Maria Sheridan Gavin A Falk Daniel Joyce R Matthew Walsh Andrew M Smith Gareth Morris-Stiff | 2014 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2014,13,5: | 1 |
