| 6 | Fungal-contaminated grass and well water and sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis显示文摘Fungi are important infectious disease-causing agents, but are often overlooked as environmental factors in disease. We review several lines of evidence that point to a potential fungal origin of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS),the most common form of motor neurone disease.Approximately 90%cases of ALS are sporadic, and the aetiology of sporadic ALS is still unknown. We have previously postulated that grass or soil-associated fungal infections may be a leading cause of sporadic ALS.Herein we extend this proposal to water-associated fungi.A wide variety of fungi have been reported in drinking water including Acremonium,Alternaria,Aspergillus,Cladosporium,Fusarium,Penicillium and Trichoderma. Some of these are known to produce neurotoxic mycotoxins.Despite this, drinking water is not routinely monitored for fungal contamination.Fungal contamination could explain the close correlation between distribution of well water and cases of sporadic ALS in the United States. We propose several mechanisms by which an opportunistic fungal infection from environmental exposure(to water, soil or plants)can lead to long term neuronal degradation resulting in the hallmarks of ALS.If confirmed, the association between fungal infection and sporadic ALS could lead to novel treatment strategies for this progressive and fatal disease. | Peter William French Russell Ian Ludowyke Gilles J.Guillemin | 2019 | Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,9: | 1 |

| 13 | Technologies to Support Community Flood Disaster Risk Reduction显示文摘Floods affect more people globally than any other type of natural hazard. Great potential exists for new technologies to support flood disaster risk reduction. In addition to existing expert-based data collection and analysis, direct input from communities and citizens across the globe may also be used to monitor, validate, and reduce flood risk. New technologies have already been proven to effectively aid in humanitarian response and recovery. However, while ex-ante technologies are increasingly utilized to collect information on exposure, efforts directed towards assessing and monitoring hazards and vulnerability remain limited. Hazard model validation and social vulnerability assessment deserve particular attention. New technologies offer great potential for engaging people and facilitating the coproduction of knowledge. | Ian McCallum Wei Liu Linda See Reinhard Mechler Adriana Keating Stefan Hochrainer-Stigler Junko Mochizuki Steffen Fritz Sumit Dugar Miguel Arestegui Michael Szoenyi Juan-Carlos Laso Bayas Peter Burek Adam French Inian Moorthy | 2016 | International Journal of Disaster Risk Science2016,7,2: | 0 |
| 14 | Alcohol intake is associated with a decreased risk of developing primary biliary cholangitis显示文摘BACKGROUND Primary biliary cholangitis(PBC)is a chronic progressive liver disease of unknown aetiology characterised by immune-mediated destruction of small and medium-sized intrahepatic bile ducts. There are few well-established risk factors and epidemiological studies are needed to further evaluate the pathogenesis of the disease.AIM To evaluate the relationship between alcohol intake, smoking and marijuana use with PBC development.METHODS We conducted a prevalent case control study of 200 cases and 200 age(within a five year age band)and sex-matched controls, identified from the Victorian PBC prevalence study. We assessed lifetime alcohol intake and smoking behaviour(both tobacco and marijuana)prior to PBC onset and used conditional logistic regression for analyses.RESULTS Alcohol intake consistently showed a dose-dependent inverse association with case status, and this was most substantial for 21-30 years and 31-40 years(Ptrend<0.001).Smoking was associated with PBC,with a stronger association with a longer duration of smoking[e.g.,adjusted OR 2.27(95%CI:1.12-4.62)for those who had smoked for 20-35 years].There was no association between marijuana use and PBC.CONCLUSION Alcohol appears to have an inverse relationship with PBC.Smoking has been confirmed as an environmental risk factor for PBC.There was no association between marijuana use and PBC. | Janine Adele French Paul Gow Steven Simpson-Yap Kate Collins Justin Ng Peter W Angus Ingrid A F van der Mei | 2022 | World Journal of Hepatology2022,14,9: | 0 |
