1Relationship Between Beak Morphological Variables and Body Size and Mantle Length of Male and Female Argentine Shortfin Squid(Illex argentinus)显示文摘Beak of cephalopod is an important hard tissue.Understanding the morphology of beak can yield critical information on the role of cephalopods in the ecosystem.The south patagonic stock of the Argentine shortfin squid,Illex argentinus,is not only one of the most important fishing targets,but also one of the most important species in the marine eco-system of the southwest Atlantic.A total of 430 samples of I.argentinus,including 229 females 103-346mm in mantle length(ML) and 201 males 140-298mm in ML,were collected from the area off the Exclusive Economic Zone of Argentinean waters by Chinese squid jigging vessels during February to May 2007.The morphology of their beaks was evaluated.The relationships between beak morphological variables and ML differed significantly among males and females.They could be best described by logarithmic functions for females and linear functions for males except for upper wing length(UWL) and lower rostrum length(LRL),which followed exponential functions in their relationships with ML.The results showed the sexual dimorphism in the relationship between ML and beak morphology for the south patagonic stock of I.argentinus.However,no significant difference was found between males and females in the relationships of beak morphological variables(except for UWL) versus body weight(BW),suggesting that the relationship between beak morphological variables and BW can be used for estimating the biomass consumed by their predators.CHEN Xinjun LU Huajie LIU Bilin FANG Zhou 2012Journal of Ocean University of China2012,11,4:7
2Phylogeography,Transmission,and Viral Proteins of Nipah Virus显示文摘Nipah virus (NiV), a zoonotic paramyxovirus belonging to the genus Henipavirus, is classified as a Biosafety Level-4 pathogen based on its high pathogenicity in humans and the lack of available vaccines or therapeutics. Since its initial emergence in 1998 in Malaysia, this virus has become a great threat to domestic animals and humans. Sporadic outbreaks and person-to-person transmission over the past two decades have resulted in hundreds of human fatalities. Epidemiological surveys have shown that NiV is distributed in Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific Ocean, and is transmitted by its natural reservoir, Pteropid bats. Numerous efforts have been made to analyze viral protein function and structure to develop feasible strategies for drug design. 3Fishery Biology of Jumbo Flying Squid Dosidicus gigas off Costa Rica Dome显示文摘The jumbo flying squid(Dosidicus gigas) population was surveyed with the help of Chinese squid jigging vessels off the Costa Rica Dome(4°–11°N, 90°–100°W) in 2009 and 2010. The daily catch of D. gigas in the two survey cruises ranged from 0 to 5.5 t and was mostly obtained from the areas bounded by 6°–9°N and 91°–94°W and by 6°30′–7°30′N and 96°–97°W. The sea surface temperature in the areas yielding the most catch ranged from 27.5 to 29℃. The sex ratio of the total catch was 3.75:1(female: male). The mantle length of the squid ranged from 211 to 355 mm(male) and from 204 to 429 mm(female) with an average of 297.9 and 306.7 mm, respectively. In the relationship of the mantle length(mm) and body weight(g) of the squid, there was no significant difference between sexes. The female and male were at a similar maturity, and most individuals are maturing or have matured with a few females being spent. The size(mantle length) and age at the first sexual maturity were 297 mm and 195 d in females, and less than 211 mm and 130 d in males, respectively. Most of the sampled stomachs(70.6%) had no food remains. The major preys of the squids were fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, with the most abundant Myctophum orientale and D. gigas. The preys in more than 65% of the non-empty sampled stomachs evidenced the cannibalism of D. gigas. 4Identification of Three Common Loliginidae Squid Species in the South China Sea by Analyzing Hard Tissues with Geometric Outline Method显示文摘The hard tissues of squid can provide important information for species identification. In this study, we used statolith and beak to identify three squid species including Uroteuthis duvaucelii, Loliolus beka, and U. edulis in the South China Sea. Because of the highly overlapping habitat and similar body morphology of the three squid species, we explored four different ways to identify them, by using statolith, upper beak, lower beak and a combination of statolith and beak. An outline geometric morphometric method and stepwise discriminant analysis were used to evaluate the most suitable method for the identification. We found that the combination of statolith and beak had the highest cross validation rate that was 75.0%, 87.5% and 88.7% for U. duvaucelii, L. beka and U. edulis, respectively. Using two beaks had similar results and the lowest cross validation rate was 60.0%, 50.0%, and 73.7% for the upper beak, 46.9%, 58.5% and 75.3% for the lower beak of U. duvaucelii, L. beka and U. edulis, respectively. Analyzing with the statolith had moderate cross validation which was 72.2%, 80.0%, and 87.7% for U. duvaucelii, L. beka and U. edulis, respectively. From the results it is suggested when the entire body of a squid is available, a combination of statolith and beak should be used for the identification. 5Using Different Standardized Methods for Species Identification:A Case Study Using Beaks from Three Ommastrephid Species显示文摘The cephalopod beak is a vital hard structure with a stable configuration and has been widely used for the identification of cephalopod species. This study was conducted to determine the best standardization method for identifying different species by measuring 12 morphological variables of the beaks of Illex argentinus, Ommastrephes bartramii, and Dosidicus gigas that were collected by Chinese jigging vessels. To remove the effects of size, these morphometric variables were standardized using three methods. The average ratios of the upper beak morphological variables and upper crest length of O. bartramii and D. gigas were found to be greater than those of I. argentinus. However, for lower beaks, only the average of LRL(lower rostrum length)/LCL(lower crest length), LRW(lower rostrum width)/LCL, and LLWL(lower lateral wall length)/LCL of O. bartramii and D. gigas were greater than those of I. argentinus. The ratios of beak morphological variables and crest length were found to be all significantly different among the three species(P < 0.001). Among the three standardization methods, the correct classification rate of stepwise discriminant analysis(SDA) was the highest using the ratios of beak morphological variables and crest length. Compared with hood length, the correct classification rate was slightly higher when using beak variables standardized by crest length using an allometric model. The correct classification rate of the lower beak was also found to be greater than that of the upper beak. This study indicates that the ratios of beak morphological variables to crest length could be used for interspecies and intraspecies identification. 6Ontogenetic difference of beak elemental concentration and its possible application in migration reconstruction for Ommastrephes bartramii in the North Pacific Ocean显示文摘The migration route of oceanic squid provides critical information for us to understand their spatial and temporal variations.Mark-recapture and electronic tags tend to be problematic during processing.Cephalopod hard structures such as the beak,containing abundant ecological information with stable morphology and statolithlike sequences of growth increments,may provide information for studying spatio-temporal distribution.In this study,we developed a method,which is based on elemental concentration of beaks at different ontogenetic stages and sampling locations,to reconstruct the squid migration route.We applied this method to Ommastrephes bartramii in the North Pacific Ocean.Nine trace elements were detected in the rostrum sagittal sections(RSS)of the beak using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(LA-ICP-MS).For those elements,significant differences were found between the different ontogenetic stages for phosphorus(P),copper(Cu)and zinc(Zn).Sodium(Na),P and Zn were chosen as indicators of sea surface temperature(SST)and a regression model was estimated.The high probability of occurrence in a particular area represented the possible optimal squid location based on a Bayesian model.A reconstructed migration route in this study,combining all the locations at different ontogenetic stages,was consistent with that hypothesized in previous studies.This study demonstrates that the beak can provide useful information for identifying the migration routes of oceanic squid.Zhou Fang Bilin Liu Xinjun Chen Yong Chen 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,10:4
7Estimation of Age,Growth and Maturation of Purpleback Flying Squid,Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis,in Bashi Channel,Central Pacific Ocean显示文摘The age, growth and maturation of Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis were determined with statolith data collected with a light purse seine from the Bashi Channel of central Pacific Ocean. The estimated longevity of the squid was no more than 6 months for females, and no more than 5 months for males. Growth in mantle length(ML) was best described by logistic models for both females and males, while growth in body weight(BW) was best fitted by power curves. The maximum absolute growth rate(AGR) and instantaneous growth rate(IGR) in ML or BW both occurred at 91–105 days for females and 76–90 days for males. Back calculated hatching dates were from October to January, with a peak in December, although the short duration of sampling date might have had an influence on the result. The lower percentage of mature females(37.2%) suggested that the study area during the sampling date was not a spawning ground for the species. 8Basal internode elongation of rice as affected by light intensity and leaf area显示文摘Short basal internodes are important for lodging resistance of rice(Oryza sativa L.).Several canopy indices affect the elongation of basal internodes,but uncertainty as to the key factors determining elongation of basal internodes persists.The objectives of this study were(1)to identify key factors affecting the elongation of basal internodes and(2)to establish a quantitative relationship between basal internode length and canopy indices.An inbred rice cultivar,Yinjingruanzhan,was grown in two split-plot field experiments with three N rates(0,75,and 150 kg N ha−1 in early season and 0,90,and 180 kg N ha−1 in late season)as main plots,three seedling densities(16.7,75.0,and 187.5 seedlings m−2)as subplots,and three replications in the 2015 early and late seasons in Guangzhou,China.Light intensity at base of canopy(Lb),light quality as determined from red/far-red light ratio(R/FR),light transmission ratio(LTR),leaf area index(LAI),leaf N concentration(NLV)and final length of second internode(counted from soil surface upward)(FIL)were recorded.Higher N rate and seedling density resulted in significantly longer FIL.FIL was negatively correlated with Lb,LTR,and R/FR(P<0.01)and positively correlated with LAI(P<0.01),but not correlated with NLV(P>0.05).Stepwise linear regression analysis showed that FIL was strongly associated with Lb and LAI(R2=0.82).Heavy N application to pot-grown rice at the beginning of first internode elongation did not change FIL.We conclude that FIL is determined mainly by Lb and LAI at jointing stage.NLV has no direct effect on the elongation of basal internodes.N application indirectly affects FIL by changing LAI and light conditions in the rice canopy.Reducing LAI and improving canopy light transmission at jointing stage can shorten the basal internodes and increase the lodging resistance of rice.Xuhua Zhong Kaiming Liang Bilin Peng Ka Tian Xiaojuan Li Nongrong Huang Yanzhuo Liu Junfeng Pan 2020The Crop Journal2020,8,1:3
9High Individual Variability in Beak Stable Isotopes of Jumbo Squid off Peruvian Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) Waters in the Analysis of Migratory and Foraging Ecology显示文摘Stable isotopes(δ^(13)C and δ^(15)N) have been widely used to track cephalopod habitat, migration and trophic structure. In this study, we analyzed the δ^(13)C and δ^(15)N values in 245 Dosidicus gigas beaks collected during 2009–2010 and in 2013 off Peruvian Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) waters. High individual variation in beak stable isotopes was shown with values ranging from-19.4‰ to-15.8‰ for δ^(13)C and from 5.0‰ to 15.1‰ for δ^(15)N. A generalized additive model(GAM) showed that latitude, mantle length and distance to shelf break significantly described the isotope variation with deviance ranging from 16.6% in δ^(13)C to 36.3% in δ^(15)N. Large variability in beak δ^(13)C values for a given size and sampling station indicated that D. gigas off the Peruvian EEZ waters migrate in different ways when they occupy a large range of habitats for their ontogeny. Low baseline δ^(15)N values suggested that spatial changes in diet trophic level may be the main determinative factor in beak δ^(15)N variation. We conclude that high variability in beak δ^(15)N values for a given set of explanatory variables indicated that D. gigas is an opportunistic predator with highly diverse dietary habitats. 10Comparative age and growth of Uroteuthis chinensis and Uroteuthis edulis from China Seas based on statolith显示文摘To determine the age and growth of Uroteuthis chinensis and U.edulis,growth increments of the lateral dome of the statolith were used in the present study.Specimens of the two species caught in the South China Sea(SCS)and East China Sea(ECS)were used to compare the age and growth differences between sexes.In the present study,we found the two species have similar lifespans of less than 200 days.We also found that there were significant differences in the relationships between mantle length and body weight for two species and for both sexes in the same species.The back-calculated hatching date for the two species was similar,i.e.October to January for specimens caught in spring,and March to June for specimens caught in summer(U.edulis)or autumn(U.chinensis).Exponential and logistic growth curves were fitted to build the age and mantle length relationship.Both growth curves showed that U.chinensis has a larger mantle length than U.edulis at the same age.The results of the growth rates also showed that U.chinensis grows faster than U.edulis.However,there are discrepancies between previous studies and the present study on the lifespan of the two species.Also,the sample size of the present study is small especially for U.edulis.Hence,future studies should be conducted to validate the daily periodicity of growth increment in the regions of statolith(except for the lateral dome which has been validated)and the sample size should be increased for age and growth studies.Yue Jin Na Li Xinjun Chen Bilin Liu Jianhua Li 2019Aquaculture and Fisheries2019,4,4:3
11Fatigue behavior of high-entropy alloys: A review显示文摘Fatigue failures cost approximately 4% of the United States' gross domestic product(GDP). The design of highly fatigue-resistant materials is always in demand. Different from conventional strategies of alloy design, high-entropy alloys(HEAs) are defined as materials with five or more principal elements, which could be solid solutions. This locally-disordered structure is expected to lead to unique fatigue-resistant properties. In this review, the studies of the fatigue behavior of HEAs during the last five years are summarized. The four-point-bending high-cycle fatigue coupled with statistical modelling, and the fatigue-crack-growth behavior of HEAs, are reviewed. The effects of sample defects and nanotwins-deformation mechanisms on four-point-bending high-cycle fatigue of HEAs are discussed in detail. The influence of stress ratio and temperature on fatigue-crack-growth characteristics of HEAs is also discussed. HEAs could exhibit comparable or greater fatigue properties, relative to conventional materials. 12A Preliminary Analysis of Trace-Elemental Signatures in Statoliths of Different Spawning Cohorts for Dosidicus gigas off EEZ Waters of Chile显示文摘We applied solution-based ICP-MS method to quantify the trace-elemental signatures in statoliths of jumbo flying squid, Dosidius gigas, which were collected from the waters off northern and central Chile during the scientific surveys carried out by Chinese squid jigging vessels in 2007 and 2008. The age and spawning date of the squid were back-calculated based on daily increments in statoliths. Eight elemental ratios(Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Na/Ca, Fe/Ca, Cu/Ca and Zn/Ca) were analyzed. It was found that Sr is the second most abundant element next to Ca, followed by Na, Fe, Mg, Zn, Cu, Ba and Mn. There was no significant relationship between element/Ca and sea surface temperature(SST) and sea surface salinity(SSS), although weak negative or positive tendency was found. MANOVA analysis showed that multivariate elemental signatures did not differ among the cohorts spawned in spring, autumn and winter, and no significant difference was found between the northern and central sampling locations. Classification results showed that all individuals of each spawned cohorts were correctly classified. 20δ13C and δ15N in Humboldt squid beaks: understanding potential geographic population connectivity and movement显示文摘We quantified theδ^13C andδ^15N values in the lower beaks of Humboldt squid,Dosidicus gigas,collected from international waters off Costa Rica,Ecuador,Peru and Chile by Chinese squid jigging vessels during 2009,2010 and 2013.There was a significant difference in the isotopic values among regions with the lowest value off Ecuador and the highest off Chile,which were interpreted as a function of trophic effects as well as baseline values.However,constant trophic level of D.gigas across its geographic range showed that spatial variation in the baseline of primary production is the main driver responsible for the observed geographic isotope variability.Inter-regional difference and intra-regional convergence of isotope values indicated squid off Costa Rica,Ecuador and Chile belong to different geographically segregated populations,which were previously proved by integrated population identifying method.In contrast,the higher variations inδ^13C andδ^15N values in a given size group suggest the squid off Peru move and forage in different places.Moreover,potential population exchange could be responsible for the overlap of the isotope values between the squid off Peru and off Chile.On the whole,the spatial difference in isotopic values of Humboldt squid beaks improves our understanding of potential geographic population connectivity and movement.Bilin Liu Xinjun Chen Weiguo Qian Yue Jin Jianhua Li 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,10:1
