Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of reducing dietary fiber on patients with idiopathic constipation. METHODS: Sixty-three cases of idiopathic constipation presenting between May 2008 and May 2010 were enrolled into the study after colonoscopy excluded an organic cause of the constipation. Patients with previous colon surgery or a medical cause of their constipation were excluded. All patients were given an explanation on the role of fiber in the gastrointestinal tract. They were then asked to go on a no fiber diet for 2 wk. Thereafter, they were asked to reduce the amount of dietary fiber intake to a level that they found acceptable. Dietary fiber intake, symptoms of constipation, difficulty in evacuation of stools, anal bleeding, abdominal bloating or abdominal pain were recorded at 1 and 6 mo. RESULTS: The median age of the patients (16 male, 47 female) was 47 years (range, 20-80 years). At 6 mo, 41 patients remained on a no fiber diet, 16 on a reduced fiber diet, and 6 resumed their high fiber diet for religious or personal reasons. Patients who stopped or reduced dietary fiber had significant improvement in their symp-toms while those who continued on a high fiber diet had no change. Of those who stopped fiber completely, the bowel frequency increased from one motion in 3.75 d (± 1.59 d) to one motion in 1.0 d (± 0.0 d) (P < 0.001); those with reduced fiber intake had increased bowel frequency from a mean of one motion per 4.19 d (± 2.09 d) to one motion per 1.9 d (± 1.21 d) on a reduced fiber diet (P < 0.001); those who remained on a high fiber diet continued to have a mean of one motion per 6.83 d (± 1.03 d) before and after consultation. For no fiber, reduced fiber and high fiber groups, respectively, symptoms of bloating were present in 0%, 31.3% and 100% (P < 0.001) and straining to pass stools occurred in 0%, 43.8% and 100% (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Idiopathic constipation and its associated symptoms can be effectively reduced by stopping or even lowering the intake of dietary fiber. | Kok-Sun Ho Charmaine You Mei Tan Muhd Ashik Mohd Daud Francis Seow-Choen | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,33: | 8
Metabolic complications of hepatitis C virus infection显示文摘Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection is a systemic disease that is implicated in multiple extrahepatic organ dysfunction contributing to its protean manifestations. HCV is associated with diverse extrahepatic disorders including atherosclerosis, glucose and lipid metabolic disturbances, alterations in the iron metabolic pathways, and lymphoproliferative diseases over and above the traditional liver manifestations of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The orchestration between HCV major proteins and the liver-muscle-adipose axis, poses a major burden on the global health of human body organs, if not adequately addressed. The close and inseparable associations between chronic HCV infection, metabolic disease, and cardiovascular disorders are specifically important considering the increasing prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome, and their economic burden to patients, the healthcare systems, and society. Cellular and molecular mechanisms governing the interplay of these organs and tissues in health and disease are therefore of significant interest. The coexistence of metabolic disorders and chronic hepatitis C infection also enhances the progression to liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The presence of metabolic disorders is believed to influence the chronicity and virulence of HCV leading to liver disease progression. This comprehensive review highlights current knowledge on the metabolic manifestations of hepatitis C and the potential pathways in which these metabolic changes can influence the natural history of the disease. | Rahul Chaudhari Sherouk Fouda Ashik Sainu Joseph M Pappachan | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,13: | 3
Morphological and Genetical Variability among Rhizoctonia solani Isolates Causing Sheath Blight Disease of Rice显示文摘Eighteen isolates of Rhizoctonia solani collected from infected rice plants in four different locations of Bangladesh were studied by using morphological characters and molecular markers. Anastomosis study with a reference isolate confirmed that all the isolates belonged to R. solani. Significant variation was observed in sclerotial size, shape and distribution. Un-weighted pair group method with arithmetic mean dendrogram constructed based on the Gower's general similarity coefficient showed that these isolates were grouped into four clusters at the 0.68 similarity coefficent according to morphological characters. Cluster I was a major cluster consisting of 13 isolates, while clusters Ⅱ to Ⅳ consisted of 1 or 2 isolates. Analyses by variable number of tandem repeat and amplified fragment length polymorphism markers showed that the isolates were grouped into five and three clusters at a similarity coefficient of 0.64 and 0.69, respectively. Although most of the variability was found between isolates from different regions as expected, significant variation was observed within the isolates collected from similar agro-ecological regions. Our results suggest the presence of different races of R. solani within the same local geographic regions. | Zakiah Rahman MONI Md Ansar ALI Md Shahidul ALAM Md Asif RAHMAN Md Rejwan BHUIYAN Md Salim MIAN Khandakar Md IFTEKHARUDDAULA Md Abdul LATIF Mohammad Ashik Iqbal KHAN | 2016 | Rice science2016,23,1: | 2

Mid-infrared upconversion imaging using femtosecond pulses显示文摘Mid-infrared(mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopic techniques have been rapidly evolving in recent years, primarily due to a multitude of applications within diverse fields such as biomedical imaging, chemical sensing, and food quality inspection. Mid-IR upconversion detection is a promising tool for exploiting some of these applications. In this paper, various characteristics of mid-IR upconversion imaging in the femtosecond regime are investigated using a 4 f imaging setup. A fraction of the 100 fs, 80 MHz output from a Ti:sapphire laser is used to synchronously pump an optical parametric oscillator, generating 200 fs mid-IR pulses tunable across the 2.7–4.0 μm wavelength range. The signal-carrying mid-IR pulses are detected by upconversion with the remaining fraction of the original pump beam inside a bulk LiNbO3 crystal, generating an upconverted field in the visible/near-IR range, enabling silicon-based CCD detection. Using the same pump source for generation and detection ensures temporal overlap of pulses inside the nonlinear crystal used for upconversion, thus resulting in high conversion efficiency even in a single-pass configuration. A theory is developed to calculate relevant acceptance parameters, considering the large spectral bandwidths and the reduced interaction length due to group velocity mismatch, both associated with ultrashort pulses. Furthermore, the resolution of this ultrashort-pulsed upconversion imaging system is described. It is demonstrated that the increase in acceptance bandwidth leads to increased blurring in the upconverted images. The presented theory is consistent with experimental observations. | Ashik A.S. | 10 | A study on stochastic longitudinal wave equation in a magneto-electro-elastic annular bar to find the analytical solutions显示文摘In this paper,we set up dynamic solitary perturb solutions of a unidirectional stochastic longitudinal wave equation in a magneto-electro-elastic annular bar by a feasible, useful, and influential method named the dual(G’/G,1/G)-expansion method.Computer software, like Mathematica,is used to complete this discussion. The obtained solutions of the proposed equation are classified into trigonometric, hyperbolic, and rational types which play an important role in searching for numerous scientific events. The technique employed here is an extension of the(G’/G)-expansion technique for finding all previously discovered solutions. To illustrate our findings more clearly,we provide 2D and 3D charts of the various recovery methods. We then contrasted our findings with those of past solutions. The graphical illustrations of the acquired solutions are singular periodic solitons and kink solitons which are added at the end of this paper. | M Mamun Miah M Ashik Iqbal M S Osman | 2023 | Communications in Theoretical Physics2023,75,8: | 0
Genetic and biochemical aspects of quorum sensing in the bacterial lifestyle and pathogenesis显示文摘Quorum sensing is the biochemical communication system within bacterial cells which may instigate their virulence factors, and hence,is imperative for pathogenesis.Such a system optimizes metabolic and behavioral activities played by the densely populated bacterial community as well as the production of the concomitant response against diffusible or secreted signals. Thus, the multi-layered signal transduction networks of quorum sensing help bacteria acclimatize to the disadvantages by increasing their confrontation ability aided by biofilm formation.Previous studies unraveled the impact of quorum sensing in the microbial interactions both within a single species and between several species. The development of the synthetic ecological models has added advantages in the studies of microbial sociability in natural habitats as well as aided in drug designing.Current review highlighted the up-to-date knowledge on the basic mechanisms of quorum sensing and its influence to accelerate the bacterial resistance against different environmental stimuli or synthetic drugs along with the factors affecting the quorum sensing system, and the harmful role of quorum sensing in food spoilage. The information gathered in this review would be beneficial to understand the metabolic cross talk as well as the virulence traits of the pathogenic microorganisms in course of their pathogenesis augmented by quorum sensing. | Nafisa Tabassum Syed Abdullah Ibn Asaduzzaman AKM Ashik Ullah Afia Ibnat Ava Rahmatur Rob Kawnain Rabib Hasan Mahin Faiqa Samrose Sezen Rashed Noor | 2021 | Life Research2021,4,2: | 0
