| 3 | Forage and breed effects on behavior and temperament of pregnant beef heifers显示文摘Background: Integration of behavioral observations with traditional selection schemes may lead to enhanced animal well-being and more profitable forage-based cattle production systems.Brahman-influenced(BR;n = 64) and Gelbvieh × Angus(GA;n = 64) heifers consumed either toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue(E+) or one of two nontoxic endophyte-infected tall fescue(NT) cultivars during two yr.Heifers were weighed at midpoint and termination of grazing.Grazing behavior(grazing, resting in the shade, lying,or standing without grazing) was recorded(n = 13 visual observations per yr in June and July) for each pasture.During yr 2,exit velocity(EV) and serum prolactin(PRL) were determined. Results: Grazing behavior was influenced(P < 0.05) by an interaction between fescue cultivar and breed type.Gelbvieh × Angus heifers assigned to E+ pastures had the lowest percentage of animals grazing and the largest percentage of animals resting in the shade.Brahman-influenced heifers had faster EV(P < 0.001) than GA heifers(0.52 vs.0.74 ± 0.04 s/m,respectively).Body weight(BW) was affected(P < 0.01) by an interaction of tall fescue cultivar and d,and an interaction of tall fescue cultivar and breed type.Heifers grazing NT pastures were heavier(P < 0.01) than heifers grazing E+ pastures at midpoint and termination.Gelbvieh × Angus heifers grazing NT pastures were heavier(P < 0.01) than GA and BR heifers grazing E+ and BR heifers grazing NT pastures. An interaction of forage cultivar and breed type occurred on serum PRL(P < 0.01).Conclusion: Collectively fescue cultivar,EV,and concentrations of serum PRL were associated with grazing behavior.Heifers grazing NT pastures were observed to be grazing more than heifers assigned to E+ pastures, regardless of breed type, which may have contributed to changes in BW and average daily gain(ADG) in heifers.Integration of behavioral observations along with traditional selection schemes may lead to enhanced animal well-being and more profitable forage-based cattle production systems. | Angela R Mays Michael L Looper Benjamin C Williamson Kenneth P Coffey Wayne K Coblentz Glen E Aiken Charles F Rosenkrans Jr | 2013 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2013,4,3: | 1 |

| 5 | A behavior and physiology-based decision support tool to predict thermal comfort and stress in non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late-gestation sows显示文摘Background:Although thermal indices have been proposed for swine, none to our knowledge differentiate by reproductive stage or predict thermal comfort using behavioral and physiological data. The study objective was to develop a behavior and physiology-based decision support tool to predict thermal comfort and stress in multiparous(3.28±0.81)non-pregnant(n=11),mid-gestation(n=13),and late-gestation(n=12)sows.Results:Regression analyses were performed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4 to determine the optimal environmental indicator[dry bulb temperature(TDB)and dew point]of heat stress(HS)in non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and lategestation sows with respiration rate(RR)and body temperature(TB)successively used as the dependent variable in a cubic function.A linear relationship was observed for skin temperature(T_(S))indicating that TDB rather than the sow HS response impacted T_(S)and so T_(S)was excluded from further analyses.Reproductive stage was significant for all analyses(P<0.05).Heat stress thresholds for each reproductive stage were calculated using the inflections points of RR for mild HS and TB for moderate and severe HS.Mild HS inflection points differed for non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late gestation sows and occurred at 25.5,25.1,and 24.0℃,respectively.Moderate HS inflection points differed for non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late gestation sows and occurred at 28.1,27.8,and 25.5℃,respectively.Severe HS inflection points were similar for non-pregnant and mid-gestation sows(32.9℃)but differed for late-gestation sows(30.8℃).These data were integrated with previously collected behavioral thermal preference data to estimate the TDB that non-pregnant,mid-gestation,and late-gestation sows found to be cool(TDB | Betty R.McConn Allan P.Schinckel Lindsey Robbins Brianna N.Gaskill Angela R.Green‑Miller Donald C.Lay Jr Jay S.Johnson | 2023 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2023,14,2: | 0 |
| 6 | Oxygen supply did not affect how lizards responded to thermal stress显示文摘Zoologists rely on mechanistic niche models of behavioral thermoregulation to understand how animals respond to climate change. These models predict that species will need to disperse to higher altitudes to persist in a warmer world. However, thermal stress and, thus, thermoregulatory behavior may depend on atmospheric oxygen as well as environmental temperatures.Severe hypoxia causes animals to prefer lower body temperatures, which could be interpreted as evidence that oxygen supply limits heat tolerance.Such a constraint could prevent animals from successfully dispersing to high elevations during climate change.Still,an effect of oxygen supply on preferred body temperature has only been observed when oxygen concentrations fall far below levels experienced in nature. To see whether animals perceive greater thermal stress at an ecologically relevant level of hypoxia,we studied the thermoregulatory behavior of lizards(Sceloporus tristichus)exposed to oxygen concentrations of 13%and 21%(equivalent to PO2 at 4000 m and 0 m,respectively). In addition,we exposed lizards to 29%oxygen to see whether they would accept a higher body temperature at hyperoxia than at normoxia. At each oxygen level,we measured a behavioral response to heat stress known as the voluntary thermal maximum:the temperature at which a warming animal sought a cool refuge.Oxygen concentration had no discernable effect on the voluntary thermal maximum, suggesting that lizards experience thermal stress similarly at all 3 levels of oxygen(13%,12%and 29%).Future research should focus on thermoregulatory behaviors under ecologically relevant levels of hypoxia. | Agustín CAMACHO John M.VANDENBROOKS Angela RILEY Rory S.TELEMECO Michael J.ANGILLETTA Jr | 2018 | Integrative Zoology2018,13,4: | 0 |
