Intestinal microbiota in health and disease: Role of bifidobacteria in gut homeostasis显示文摘The pool of microbes inhabiting our body is known as 'microbiota' and their collective genomes as 'microbiome'. The colon is the most densely populated organ in the human body, although other parts, such as the skin, vaginal mucosa, or respiratory tract, also harbour specific microbiota. This microbial community regulates some important metabolic and physiological functions of the host, and drives the maturation of the immune system in early life, contributing to its homeostasis during life. Alterations of the intestinal microbiota can occur by changes in composition(dysbiosis), function, or microbiota-host interactions and they can be directly correlated with several diseases. The only disease in which a clear causal role of a dysbiotic microbiota has been demonstrated is the case of Clostridium difficile infections. Nonetheless, alterations in composition and function of the microbiota have been associated with several gastrointestinal diseases(inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, or irritable bowel syndrome), as well as extra-intestinal pathologies, such as those affecting the liver, or the respiratory tract(e.g., allergy, bronchial asthma, and cystic fibrosis), among others. Species of Bifidobacterium genus are the normal inhabitants of a healthy human gut and alterations in number and composition of their populations is one of the most frequent features present in these diseases. The use of probiotics, including bifidobacteria strains, in preventive medicine to maintain a healthy intestinal function is well documented. Probiotics are also proposed as therapeutic agents for gastrointestinal disorders and other pathologies. The World Gastroenterology Organization recently published potential clinical applications for several probiotic formulations, in which species of lactobacilli are predominant. This review is focused on probiotic preparations containing Bifidobacterium strains, alone or in combination with other bacteria, which have been tested in human clinical studies. In spite of extensive literature on and research into this topic, the degree of scientific evidence of the effectiveness of probiotics is still insufficient in most cases. More effort need to be made to design and conduct accurate human studies demonstrating the efficacy of probiotics in the prevention, alleviation, or treatment of different pathologies.Rafael Tojo Adolfo Suárez Marta G Clemente Clara G de los Reyes-Gavilán Abelardo Margolles Miguel Gueimonde Patricia Ruas-Madiedo 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,41:33
Perioperative anemia management in colorectal cancer patients:A pragmatic approach显示文摘Anemia, usually due to iron deficiency,is highly prevalent among patients with colorectal cancer.Inflammatory cytokines lead to iron restricted erythropoiesis further decreasing iron availability and impairing iron utilization.Preoperative anemia predicts for decreased survival.Allogeneic blood transfusion is widely used to correct anemia and is associated with poorer surgical outcomes, increased post-operative nosocomial infections, longer hospital stays, increased rates of cancer recurrence and perioperative venous thromboembolism.Infections are more likely to occur in those with low preoperative serum ferritin level compared to those with normal levels.A multidisciplinary, multimodal, individualized strategy, collectively termed Patient Blood Management, minimizes or eliminates allogeneic blood transfusion. This includes restrictive transfusion policy, thromboprophylaxis and anemia management to improve outcomes.Normalization of preoperative hemoglobin levels is a World Health Organization recommendation.Iron repletion should be routinely ordered when indicated.Oral iron is poorly tolerated with low adherence based on published evidence.Intravenous iron is safe and effective but is frequently avoided due to misinformation and misinterpretation concerning the incidence and clinical nature of minor infusion reactions.Serious adverse events with intravenous iron are extremely rare.Newer formulations allow complete replacement dosing in 15-60 min markedly facilitating care.Erythropoiesis stimulating agents may improve response rates.A multidisciplinary, multimodal, individualized strategy, collectively termed Patient Blood Management used to minimize or eliminate allogeneic blood transfusion is indicated to improve outcomes.Manuel Muoz Susana Gómez-Ramírez Elisa Martín-Montaez Michael Auerbach 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,8:8
Synthesis of advanced ceramics by hydrothermal crystallization and modified related methods显示文摘The present article aims to give a brief overview about the advantages of the hydrothermal crystallization method for the synthesis of advanced ceramics.Emphasis is given, not only on the conventional hydrothermal crystallization, but also on some of its variants;such as ultrasound-assisted,electrochemical-assisted,microwave-assisted and surfactant-assisted hydrothermal methods which open up new opportunities for the synthesis of ceramic materials with novel properties demanded for advanced applications. In the current work the synthesis of barium titanate(BaTiO3),lithium metasilicate(Li2SiO3)and sodium-potassium niobate(Na,K)NbO3 powders are reported as cases of study.JoséORTIZ-LANDEROS Carlos GÓMEZ-YÁÑEZ Rigoberto LÓPEZ-JUÁREZ Iván DÁVALOS-VELASCO Heriberto PFEIFFER 2012Journal of Advanced Ceramics2012,1,3:6
Structural studies of BaTiO_3:Er^(3+) and BaTiO_3:Yb^(3+) powders synthesized by hydrothermal method显示文摘Erbium and ytterbium doped barium titanate nanopowders were prepared using the hydrothermal method. A barium titanate structure doped with rare earth ions manifested new characteristics and improved the field of application of optical devices such as trichromatic tubes, LCD displays, lamps, and infrared lasers. In this work, BaTiO3:Er3+ and BaTiO3:Yb3+ were prepared using barium chloride [BaCl2], titanium butoxide [C16H36O4Ti], erbium chloride [ErCl3] and ytterbium chloride [YbCl3] as precursors. Anhydrous methanol was employed as a solvent. Metallic potassium was used to promote solubility in the system and increase the pH to 13. This method yielded the formation of a predominantly cubic structure in both Er3+ and Yb3+ doped BaTiO3 powders. Characteristic bondings of BaTiO3 were observed with FT-IR spectroscopy. The predominantly cubic structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman analyses. The particle size(~30 nm) was estimated using the Scherrer equation and X-ray diffraction data. The results were presented and discussed.Garrido-Hernández A García-Murillo A Carrillo-Romo F de J Cruz-Santiago L A Chadeyron G Morales-Ramírez A de J Velumani S 2014Journal of Rare Earths2014,32,11:3
Cognitive disorder and dementia in type 2 diabetes mellitus显示文摘Insulin,a key pleiotropic hormone, regulates metabolism through several signaling pathways in target tissues including skeletal muscle, liver, and brain. In the brain, insulin modulates learning and memory, and impaired insulin signaling is associated with metabolic dysregulation and neurodegenerative diseases. At the receptor level,in aging and Alzheimer’s disease(AD)models, the amount of insulin receptors and their functions are decreased.Clinical and animal model studies suggest that memory improvements are due to changes in insulin levels.Furthermore, diabetes mellitus(DM)and insulin resistance are associated with age-related cognitive decline, increased levels ofβ-amyloid peptide, phosphorylation of tau protein;oxidative stress,pro-inflammatory cytokine production and dyslipidemia. Recent evidence shows that deleting brain insulin receptors leads to mildobesity and insulin resistance without influencing brain size and apoptosis development.Conversely, deleting insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) affects brain size anddevelopment, and contributes to behavior changes. Insulin is synthesized locally in the brain andis released from the neurons. Here, we reviewed proposed pathophysiological hypotheses toexplain increased risk of dementia in the presence of DM. Regardless of the exact sequence ofevents leading to neurodegeneration, there is strong evidence that mitochondrial dysfunctionplays a key role in AD and DM. A triple transgenic mouse model of AD showed mitochondrialdysfunction, oxidative stress, and loss of synaptic integrity. These alterations are comparable tothose induced in wild-type mice treated with sucrose, which is consistent with the proposal thatmitochondrial alterations are associated with DM and contribute to AD development. Alterationsin insulin/IGF-1 signaling in DM could lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and low antioxidantcapacity of the cell. Thus, insulin/IGF-1 signaling is important for increased neural processing andsystemic metabolism, and could be a specific target for therapeutic strategies to decreasealterations associated with age-related cognitive decline.Genaro G Ortiz Miguel Huerta Héctor A González-Usigli Erandis D Torres-Sánchez Daniela LC Delgado-Lara Fermín P Pacheco-Moisés Mario A Mireles-Ramírez Blanca MG Torres-Mendoza Roxana I Moreno-Cih Irma E Velázquez-Brizuela 2022World Journal of Diabetes2022,13,4:2
Intravenous iron in inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘The prevalence of anemia across studies on patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is high (30%). Both iron defi ciency (ID) and anemia of chronic disease contribute most to the development of anemia in IBD. The prevalence of ID is even higher (45%). Anemia and ID negatively impact the patient's quality of life. Therefore, together with an adequate control of disease activity, iron replacement therapy should start as soon as anemia or ID is detected to attain a normal hemoglobin (Hb) and iron status. Many patients will respond to oral iron, but compliance may be poor, whereas intravenous (IV) compounds are safe, provide a faster Hb increase and iron store repletion, and presents a lower rate of treatment discontinuation. Absolute indications for IV iron treatment should include severe anemia, intolerance or inappropriate response to oral iron, severe intestinal disease activity, or use of an erythropoietic stimulating agent. Four different products are principally used in clinical practice, which differ in their pharmacokinetic properties and safety profi les: iron gluconate and iron sucrose (lower single doses), and iron dextran and ferric carboxymaltose (higher single doses). After the initial resolution of anemia and the repletion of iron stores, the patient's hematological and iron parameters should be carefully and periodically monitored, and maintenance iron treatment should be provided as required. New IV preparations that allow for giving 1000-1500 mg in a single session, thus facilitating patient management, provide an excellent tool to prevent or treat anemia and ID in this patient population, which in turn avoids allogeneic blood transfusion and improves their quality of life.Manuel Muoz Susana Gómez-Ramírez José Antonio García-Erce 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,37:2
Robotic transanal total mesorectal excision:Is the future now?显示文摘Total mesorectal excision(TME)is the standard surgical treatment for the curative radical resection of rectal cancers.Minimally invasive TME has been gaining ground favored by the continuous technological advancements.New procedures, such as transanal TME(TaTME),have been introduced to overcome some technical limitations, especially in low rectal tumors, obese patients,and/or narrow pelvis. The earliest TaTME reports showed promising results when compared with the conventional laparoscopic TME.However, recent publications raised concerns regarding the high rates of anastomotic leaks or local recurrences observed in national series.Robotic TaTME(R-TaTME)has been proposed as a novel technique incorporating the potential benefits of a perineal dissection together with precise control of the distal margins, and also offers all those advantages provided by the robotic technology in terms of improved precision and dexterity.Encouraging short-term results have been reported for R-TaTME,but further studies are needed to assess the real role of the new technique in the long-term oncological or functional outcomes. The present review aims to provide a general overview of R-TaTME by analyzing the body of the available literature, with a special focus on the potential benefits, harms, and future perspectives for this novel approach.Juan Carlos Sebastián-Tomás Aleix Martínez-Pérez Elías Martínez-López Nicola de'Angelis Marcos Gómez Ruiz Eduardo García-Granero 2021World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2021,13,8:2
Dendritic cell deficiencies persist seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection显示文摘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus(SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity components.Dendritic cells(DCs)play a key role in the defense against viral infections, for instance plasmacytoid DCs(pDCs),have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha(IFN-α).In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and IFN-αproduction,which has been associated with disease severity. In this work,we described that in addition to the DC deficiency, several DC activation and homing markers were altered in acute COVID-19 patients, which were associated with multiple inflammatory markers.Remarkably, previously hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients remained with decreased numbers of CD1c+myeloid DCs and pDCs seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, the expression of DC markers such as CD86 and CD4 were only restored in previously nonhospitalized patients, while no restoration of integrinβ7 and indoleamine 2,3-dyoxigenase(IDO)levels were observed. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the immunological sequelae of COVID-19.Alberto Pérez-Gómez Joana Vitallé Carmen Gasca-Capote Alicia Gutierrez-Valencia María Trujillo-Rodriguez Ana Serna-Gallego Esperanza Muñoz-Muela María de los Reyes Jiménez-Leon Mohamed Rafii-El-Idrissi Benhnia Inmaculada Rivas-Jeremias Cesar Sotomayor Cristina Roca-Oporto Nuria Espinosa Carmen Infante-Domínguez Juan Carlos Crespo-Rivas Alberto Fernández-Villar Alexandre Pérez-González Luis Fernando López-Cortés Eva Poveda Ezequiel Ruiz-Mateos JoséMiguel Cisneros Sonsoles Salto-Alejandre Judith Berastegui-Cabrera Pedro Camacho-Martínez Carmen Infante-Domínguez Marta Carretero-Ledesma Juan Carlos Crespo-Rivas Eduardo Márquez JoséManuel Lomas Claudio Bueno Rosario Amaya JoséAntonio Lepe Jerónimo Pachón Elisa Cordero Javier Sánchez-Céspedes Manuela Aguilar-Guisado Almudena Aguilera Clara Aguilera Teresa Aldabo-Pallas Verónica Alfaro-Lara Cristina Amodeo Javier Ampuero María Dolores Avilés Maribel Asensio Bosco Barón-Franco Lydia Barrera-Pulido Rafael Bellido-Alba Máximo Bernabeu-Wittel Candela Caballero-Eraso Macarena Cabrera Enrique Calderón Jesús Carbajal-Guerrero Manuela Cid-Cumplido Yael Corcia-Palomo Juan Delgado Antonio Domínguez-Petit Alejandro Deniz Reginal Dusseck-Brutus Ana Escoresca-Ortega Fátima Espinosa Nuria Espinosa Michelle Espinoza Carmen Ferrándiz-Millón Marta Ferrer Teresa Ferrer Ignacio Gallego-Texeira Rosa Gámez-Mancera Emilio García Horacio García-Delgado Manuel García-Gutiérrez María Luisa Gascón-Castillo Aurora González-Estrada Demetrio González Carmen Gómez-González Rocío González-León Carmen Grande-Cabrerizo Sonia Gutiérrez Carlos Hernández-Quiles Inmaculada Concepción Herrera-Melero Marta Herrero-Romero Luis Jara Carlos Jiménez-Juan Silvia Jiménez-Jorge Mercedes Jiménez-Sánchez Julia Lanseros-Tenllado Carmina López Isabel López Álvaro López-Barrios Luis F.López-Cortés Rafael Luque-Márquez Daniel Macías-García Guillermo Martín-Gutiérrez Luis Martín-Villén JoséMolina Aurora Morillo María Dolores Navarro-Amuedo Dolores Nieto-Martín Francisco Ortega María Paniagua-García Amelia Peña-Rodríguez Esther Pérez Manuel Poyato Julia Praena-Segovia Rafaela Ríos Cristina Roca-Oporto Jesús F.Rodríguez María Jesús Rodríguez-Hernández Santiago Rodríguez-Suárez Ángel Rodríguez-Villodres Nieves Romero-Rodríguez Ricardo Ruiz Zida Ruiz de Azua Celia Salamanca Sonia Sánchez Víctor Manuel Sánchez-Montagut César Sotomayor Alejandro Suárez Benjumea Javier Toral 2021Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,9:2
Simulation Tools for a Fiber-Optic Based Structural Health Monitoring System显示文摘Probability of detection(POD)graphics allow for a change from qualitative to quantitative assessment for every damage detection system, and as such it is a main request for conventional non-destructive testing(NDT)techniques. Its availability can greatly help towards the industrialization of the corresponding Structural health monitoring(SHM)system. But having in mind that for SHM systems the sensors are at fixed positions, and the location of a potential damage would change its detectability.Consequently robust simulation tools are required to obtain the model assisted probability of detection(MAPOD)which is needed to validate the SHM system. This tool may also help for the optimization of the sensor distribution, and finally will allow a probabilistic risk management.INDEUS,simulation of ultrasonic waves SHM system, was a main milestone in this direction. This article deals with the simulation tools for a strain based SHM system, using fiber optic sensors(FOS).FOS are essentially strain/temperature sensors, either with multi-point or with distributed sensing. The simulation tool includes the finite element model(FEM)for the original and damaged structure, and algorithms to compare the strain data at the pre-established sensors locations, and from this comparison to extract information about damage occurrence and location. The study has been applied to the structure of an all-composite unmanned aircraft vehicle(UAV)now under construction, designed at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid for the inspection of electrical utilities networks.Distributed sensing optical fibers were internally bonded at the fuselage and wing.Routine inspection is planned to be done with the aircraft at the test bench by imposing known loads. From the acquired strain data, damage occurrence may be calculated as slight deviations from the baselines. This is a fast inspection procedure without requiring trained specialists, and it would allow for detection of hidden damages.Simulation indicates that stringer partial debondings are detected before they become critical, while small delaminations as those produced by barely visible impact damages would require a prohibited number of sensing lines. These simulation tools may easily be applied to any other complex structure, just by changing the FEM models. From these results it is shown how a fiber optic based SHM system may be used as a reliable damage detection procedure.Alfredo Güemes Antonio Fernandez-Lopez Jaime García-Ramírez Maria Eugenia Reyes-Perez Flor Criado Zurita 2018Transactions of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics2018,35,2:2
Melatonin modifies SOX2^+ cell proliferation in dentate gyrus and modulates SIRT1 and MECP2 in long-term sleep deprivation显示文摘Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule that, after a short-term sleep deprivation, promotes the proliferation of neural stem cells in the adult hippocampus. However, this effect has not been observed in long-term sleep deprivation. The precise mechanism exerted by melatonin on the modulation of neural stem cells is not entirely elucidated, but evidence indicates that epigenetic regulators may be involved in this process. In this study,we investigated the effect of melatonin treatment during a 96-hour sleep deprivation and analyzed the expression of epigenetic modulators predicted by computational text mining and keyword clusterization. Our results showed that the administration of melatonin under sleep-deprived conditions increased the MECP2 expression and reduced the SIRT1 expression in the dentate gyrus. We observed that let-7 b,mir-132,and mir-124 were highly expressed in the dentate gyrus after melatonin administration, but they were not modified by sleep deprivation. In addition,we found more Sox2^+/5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine(BrdU)^+cells in the subgranular zone of the sleep-deprived group treated with melatonin than in the untreated group. These findings may support the notion that melatonin modifies the expression of epigenetic mediators that,in turn, regulate the proliferation of neural progenitor cells in the adult dentate gyrus under long-term sleep-deprived conditions. All procedures performed in this study were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the University of Guadalajara,Mexico(approval No.CI-16610)on January 2,2016.Alan Hinojosa-Godínez Luis F. 13由农业残余物可持续生产活性炭来吸附去除抗生素(英文)显示文摘The objectives of this study are to convert at laboratory scale agricultural residues into activated carbons(AC) with specific properties,to characterize them and to test them in adsorption reactor for tetracycline removal,a common antibiotic. Two new ACs were produced by direct activation with steam from beet pulp(BP-H2O) and peanut hulls(PH-H2O) in environmental friendly conditions.BP-H2O and PH-H2O present carbon content ranged between 78% and 91%,similar BET surface areas(821 and 829 m2·g-1 respectively) and pHPZC values(9.8).Their porosities are different:PH-H2O is mainly microporous(84%) with 0.403 cm3·g-1 of total porous volume, whereas BP-H2O develops a mesoporous volume of 0.361 cm3·g-1 representing 50% of the total porous volume. Two other commercial granular AC carbons(GAC1 and GAC2) were also characterised and used for comparison. The adsorption study is conducted in batch reactors. Two parts can be observed from kinetic decay curves:a very fast concentration decrease during the first 12 h,followed by a slow adsorption. An optimal contact time of 120 h is also deduced from these curves. It is shown as well that adsorption decreases with an increase of pH,indicating that the form preferentially adsorbed is probably the zwitterion form of the tetracycline. From equilibrium isotherms data, two adsorption models have been used:Langmuir and Freundlich. Both of them lead to a very good description of the experimental data.Maximum adsorption capacities deduced from the Langmuir equation follow the sequence:GAC2(817 mg·g-1)>BP-H2O(288 mg·g-1)>GAC1(133 mg·g-1)>PH-H2O(28 mg·g-1).In real spring waters spiked with TC(tetracyclines),adsorption isotherms show that the maximum adsorption capacity of BP-H2O is slightly increased to 309 mg·g-1 while it is decreased by one third to 550 mg·g-1 in the case of GAC2.This study demonstrates that the production of AC from agricultural residues,at lab-scale,is feasible and leads to genuine activated carbons with different intrinsic properties.Jonatan Torres-Pérez Claire Gérente Yves Andrès 2012Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2012,20,3:2
