2Efects of physical and chemical characteristics of surface sediments in the formation of shallow lake algae-induced black bloom显示文摘Surface sediments are closely related to lake black blooms. The dissolved oxygen(DO) distribution and its penetration depth in surface sediments as well as the migration and transformation of redox sensitive elements such as Fe and S at the sediment-water interface are important factors that could influence the formation of the black bloom. In this study, dredged and undredged sediment cores with diferent surface properties were used to simulate black blooms in the laboratory. The Micro Profiling System was employed to explore features of the DO and ∑ H2 S distribution at the sediment-water interface. Physical and chemical characteristics in sediments and pore waters were also analyzed. The results showed that sediment dredging efectively suppressed the black blooms. In the undredged treatment, DO penetration depth was only 50 μm. Fe2+concentrations, ∑ H2 S concentrations, and ∑ H2 S production rates were remarkably higher in surface sediments and pore waters compared to control and dredged treatments. Furthermore, depletion of DO and accumulation of Fe2+and ∑ H2 S in surface sediments and pore waters provided favorable redox environments and necessary material sources for the blooms. 4Beyond hypoxia: Occurrence and characteristics of black blooms due to the decomposition of the submerged plant Potamogeton crispus in a shallow lake显示文摘Organic matter-induced black blooms(hypoxia and an offensive odor) are a serious ecosystem disasters that have occurred in some large eutrophic shallow lakes in China. In this study, we investigated two separate black blooms that were induced by Potamogeton crispus in Lake Taihu, China. The main physical and chemical characteristics, including color- and odor-related substances, of the black blooms were analyzed. The black blooms were characterized by low dissolved oxygen concentration(close to 0 mg/L), low oxidation-reduction potential, and relatively low pH of overlying water. Notably higher Fe2+and∑S2-were found in the black-bloom waters than in waters not affected by black blooms. The black color of the water may be attributable to the high concentration of these elements, as black FeS was considered to be the main substance causing the black color of blooms in freshwater lakes. Volatile organic sulfur compounds, including dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and dimethyl trisulfide, were very abundant in the black-bloom waters. The massive anoxic degradation of dead Potamogeton crispus plants released dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and dimethyl trisulfide, which were the main odor-causing compounds in the black blooms. The black blooms also induced an increase in ammonium nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus levels in the overlying waters. 5Anti-SARS-CoV-2 activities in vitro of Shuanghuanglian preparations and bioactive ingredients显示文摘Human infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)causes coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)and there is no cure currently.The 3CL protease(3CLpro)is a highly conserved protease which is indispensable for CoVs replication,and is a promising target for development of broad-spectrum antiviral drugs.In this study we investigated the anti-SARS-CoV-2 potential of Shuanghuanglian preparation,a Chinese traditional patent medicine with a long history for treating respiratory tract infection in China.We showed that either the oral liquid of Shuanghuanglian,the lyophilized powder of Shuanghuanglian for injection or their bioactive components dose-dependently inhibited SARS-CoV-23CLpro as well as the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in Vero E6 cells.Baicalin and baicalein,two ingredients of Shuanghuanglian,were characterized as the first noncovalent,nonpeptidomimetic inhibitors of SARS-CoV-23CLpro and exhibited potent antiviral activities in a cell-based system.Remarkably,the binding mode of baicalein with SARS-CoV-23CLpro determined by X-ray protein crystallography was distinctly different from those of known 3CLpro inhibitors.Baicalein was productively ensconced in the core of the substrate-binding pocket by interacting with two catalytic residues,the crucial S1/S2 subsites and the oxyanion loop,acting as a“shield”in front of the catalytic dyad to effectively prevent substrate access to the catalytic dyad within the active site.Overall,this study provides an example for exploring the in vitro potency of Chinese traditional patent medicines and effectively identifying bioactive ingredients toward a specific target,and gains evidence supporting the in vivo studies of Shuanghuanglian oral liquid as well as two natural products for COVID-19 treatment.Hai-xia Su Sheng Yao Wen-feng Zhao Min-jun Li Jia Liu Wei-juan Shang Hang Xie Chang-qiang Ke Hang-chen Hu Mei-na Gao Kun-qian Yu Hong Liu Jing-shan Shen Wei Tang Lei-ke Zhang Geng-fu Xiao Li Ni Dao-wen Wang Jian-ping Zuo Hua-liang Jiang Fang Bai Yan Wu Yang Ye Ye-chun Xu 2020Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2020,41,9:32

7Impact of different benthic animals on phosphorus dynamics across the sediment-water interface显示文摘As a diagenetic progress, bioturbation influences solute exchange across the sediment-water interface (SWI). Different benthic animals have various mechanical activities in sediment, thereby they may have different effects on solute exchange across the SWI. This laboratory study examined the impacts of different benthic animals on phosphorus dynamics across the SWI. Tubificid worms and Chironomidae larvae were introduced as model organisms which, based on their mechanical activities, belong to upward-conveyors and gallery-diffusers, respectively. The microcosm simulation study was carried out with a continuous flow culture system, and all sediment, water, and worms and larvae specimens were sampled from Taihu Lake, China. To compare their bioturbation effects, the same biomass (17.1 g wet weight (ww)/m 2 ) was adopted for worms and larvae. Worms altered no oxygen penetration depth in sediment, while larvae increased the O 2 penetration depth, compared to the control treatment. Their emergence also enhanced sediment O 2 uptake. The oxidation of ferrous iron in pore water produced ferric iron oxyhydroxides that adsorbed soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) from the overlying water and pore water. Larvae built obviously oxidized tubes with about 2 mm diameter and the maximum length of 6 cm in sediment, and significantly decreased ferrous iron and SRP in the pore water compared to the control and worms treatments. Worms constructed no visually-oxidized galleries in the sediment in contrast to larvae, and they did not significantly alter SRP in the pore water relative to the control treatment. The adsorption of ferric iron oxyhydroxides to SRP caused by worms and larvae inhibited SRP release from sediment. 9Pediatric reference intervals in China(PRINCE):design and rationale for a large,multicenter collaborative cross-sectional study显示文摘There is a lack of accurate pediatric reference intervals(RIs) in China, with most commonly used RIs established without consideration of the effect of age and gender. The Pediatric Reference Intervals in China(PRINCE) project aims to establish and verify pediatric RIs for 31 common laboratory measurands.The project will be a large, multicenter cross-sectional study:14,490 healthy children and adolescents aged up to 19 years will be surveyed by 10 children's hospitals and one pediatric department of a university hospital. To evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of the study methods, 602 children were surveyed in the pilot phase of the PRINCE study in April 2017: it found that some measurands were distinctly age dependent and that there were differences between values for males and females. The results of the pilot study affirmed the necessity of the PRINCE project for Chinese pediatrics. The pilot also indicated potential difficulties in the full survey, e.g., difficulties in recruiting children aged under 3 years and insufficient collection of blood samples from infants. 11Inhibitive effects of anti-oxidative vitamins on mannitol-induced apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells显示文摘Objective: Study blood vessel injury and gene expression indicating vascular endothelial cell apoptosis induced by mannitol with and without administration of anti-oxidative vitamins. Methods: Healthy rabbits were randomly divided into four groups. Mannitol was injected into the vein of the rabbit ear in each animal. Pre-treatment prior to mannitol injection was per- formed with normal saline (group B), vitamin C (group C) and vitamin E (group D). Blood vessel injury was assessed under electron and light microscopy. In a second experiment, cell culture specimen of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were treated with mannitol. Pre-treatment was done with normal saline (sample B), vitamin C (sample C) and vitamin E (sample D). Total RNA was extracted with the original single step procedure, followed by hybridisation and analysis of gene expression. Results: In the animal experiment, serious blood vessel injury was seen in group A and group B. Group D showed light injury only, and normal tissue without pathological changes was seen in group C. Of all 330 apoptosis-related genes analysed in human cell culture specimen, no significant difference was seen after pre-treatment with normal saline, compared with the gene chip without pre-treatment. On the gene chip pre-treated with vitamin C, 45 apoptosis genes were down-regulated and 34 anti-apoptosis genes were up-regulated. Pre-treatment with vitamin E resulted in the down-regulation of 3 apoptosis genes. 18A Multicenter Study of Viral Aetiology of Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Hospitalized Children in Chinese Mainland显示文摘Community-acquired pneumonia(CAP) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide.In this study,we aimed to describe the aetiology of viral infection of pediatric CAP in Chinese mainland.During November2014 to June 2016,the prospective study was conducted in 13 hospitals.The hospitalized children under 18 years old who met the criteria for CAP were enrolled.The throat swabs or nasopharyngeal aspirates(NPAs) were collected which were then screened 18 respiratory viruses using multiplex PCR assay.Viral pathogens were present in 56.6%(1539/2721) of the enrolled cases,with the detection rate of single virus in 39.8% of the cases and multiple viruses in 16.8% of the cases.The most frequently detected virus was respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)(15.2%,414/2721).The highest detection rate of virus was in <6-month-age group(70.7%,292/413).RSV,human metapneumovirus(HMPV),human parainfluenza viruses(HPIVs) and influenza B virus(Flu B) showed the similar prevalence patterns both in north and south China,but HPIVs,Flu A,human bocavirus(HBoV),human adenovirus(HAdV) and human coronaviruses(HCoVs) showed the distinct circulating patterns in north and south China.Human enterovirus/human rhinovirus(HEV/HRV)(27.6%,27/98),HBoV(18.4%,18/98),RSV(16.3%,16/98) and HMPV(14.3%,14/98) were the most commonly detected viruses in severe pneumonia cases with single virus infection.In conclusion,viral pathogens are frequently detected in pediatric CAP cases and may therefore play a vital role in the aetiology of CAP.RSV was the most important virus in hospitalized children with CAP in Chinese mainland.Yun Zhu Baoping Xu Changchong Li Zhimin Chen Ling Cao Zhou Fu Yunxiao Shang Aihuan Chen Li Deng Yixiao Bao Yun Sun Limin Ning Shuilian Yu Fang Gu Chunyan Liu Ju Yin Adong Shen Zhengde Xie Kunling Shen 2021Virologica Sinica2021,36,6:7
19Prevalence of late-onset hypogonadism among middle-aged and elderly males in China:results from a national survey显示文摘This study aimed to propose an operational definition of late-onset hypogonadism(LOH)that incorporates both clinical symptoms and serum testosterone measurements to evaluate the prevalence of LOH in aging males in China.A population-based sample of 6296 men aged 40 years-79 years old was enrolled from six representative provinces in China.Serum total testosterone(TT),sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG),and luteinizing hormone(LH)were measured and free testosterone(cFT)was calculated.The Aging Males’Symptoms(AMS)scale was used to evaluate the LOH symptoms.Finally,5078 men were included in this analysis.The TT levels did not decrease with age(P=0.59),and had no relationship with AMS symptoms(P=0.87 for AMS total score,P=0.74 for≥3 sexual symptoms).The cFT levels decreased significantly with age(P<0.01)and showed a negative association with the presence of≥3 sexual symptoms(P=0.03).The overall estimated prevalence of LOH was 7.8%(395/5078)if a cFT level<210 pmol l−1 combined with the presence of≥3 sexual symptoms was used as the criterion of LOH.Among them,26.1%(103/395)and 73.9%(292/395)had primary and secondary hypogonadism,respectively.After adjustment for confounding factors,primary and secondary hypogonadism was positively related to age and comorbidities.Body mass index was an independent risk factor for secondary hypogonadism.The results suggest that the AMS total score is not an appropriate indicator for decreased testosterone,and that the cFT level is more reliable than TT for LOH diagnosis.Secondary hypogonadism is the most common form of LOH.Yi-Jun Liu Xu-Bo Shen Na Yu Xue-Jun Shang Yi-Qun Gu Lian-Dong Zuo Cheng-Liang Xiong Zhen Ye Yuan-Zhong Zhou 2021Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,2:6
20Simultaneous Removal of H_2S and Organosulfur Compounds from Liquefied Petroleum Gas Using Formulated Solvents: Solubility Parameter Investigation and Industrial Test显示文摘The performance of four formulated solvents(labeled as UDS-I, UDS-II, UDS-III, and UDS-IV) for removing methyl mercaptan from liquefied petroleum gas was predicted based on a two-dimensional solubility parameter theory. The calculation results show that UDS-IV has the closest solubility parameter to that of methyl mercaptan as compared with other tested solvents, indicating the strongest affinity and the highest solubility for methyl mercaptan. The industrial tests at a plant for desulfurization of LPG produced from the delayed coker have shown that the UDS solvents have the excellent performance for removal of organosulfur compounds(mainly methyl mercaptan). Although the sulfur loading dramatically increases, the total sulfur content of LPG treated with UDS-IV can be reduced by about 50% in comparison with N-methyl diethanolamine. In addition, UDS-IV has superior regeneration performance and selectivity for sulfur compounds over hydrocarbons.
