Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis: What every radiologist should know显示文摘Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis(XGC) is an uncommon variant of chronic cholecystitis characterized by xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the gallbladder. Intramural accumulation of lipid-laden macrophages and acute and chronic inflammatory cells is the hallmark of the disease. The xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the gallbladder can be very severe and can spill over to the neighbouring structures like liver, bowel and stomach resulting in dense adhesions, perforation, abscess formation, fistulous communication with adjacent bowel. Striking gallbladder wall thickening and dense local adhesions can be easily mistaken for carcinoma of the gallbladder, both intraoperatively as well as on preoperative imaging. Besides, cases of concomitant gallbladder carcinoma complicating XGC have also been reported in literature. So, we have done a review of the imaging features of XGC in order to better understand the entity as well as to increase the diagnostic yield of the disease summarizing the characteristic imaging findings and associations of XGC. Among other findings, presence of intramural hypodense nodules is considered diagnostic of this entity. However, in some cases, an imaging diagnosis of XGC is virtually impossible. Fine needle aspiration cytology might be handy in such patients. A preoperative counselling should include possibility of differential diagnosis of gallbladder cancer in not so characteristic cases. | Vaibhav P Singh S Rajesh Chhagan Bihari Saloni N Desai Sudheer S Pargewar Ankur Arora | 2016 | World Journal of Radiology2016,8,2: | 21
Molecular approaches for the detection and monitoring of microbial communities in bioaerosols:A review显示文摘Bioaerosols significantly affect atmospheric processes while they undergo long-range vertical and horizontal transport and influence atmospheric chemistry and physics and climate change.Accumulating evidence suggests that exposure to bioaerosols may cause adverse health effects, including severe disease.Studies of bioaerosols have primarily focused on their chemical composition and largely neglected their biological composition and the negative effects of biological composition on ecosystems and human health. Here, current molecular methods for the identification, quantification, and distribution of bioaerosol agents are reviewed.Modern developments in environmental microbiology technology would be favorable in elucidation of microbial temporal and spatial distribution in the atmosphere at high resolution. In addition, these provide additional supports for growing evidence that microbial diversity or composition in the bioaerosol is an indispensable environmental aspect linking with public health. | Keunje Yoo Tae Kwon Lee Eun Joo Choi Jihoon Yang Sudheer Kumar Shukla Sang-il Hwang Joonhong Park | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,1: | 13
Imaging and radiological interventions in extra-hepatic portal vein obstruction显示文摘Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction(EHPVO) is a primary vascular condition characterized by chronic long standing blockage and cavernous transformation of portal vein with or without additional involvement of intrahepatic branches, splenic or superior mesenteric vein. Patients generally present in childhood with multiple episodes of variceal bleed and EHPVO is the predominant cause of paediatric portal hypertension(PHT) in developing countries. It is a pre-hepatic type of PHT in which liver functions and morphology are preserved till late. Characteristic imaging findings include multiple parabiliary venous collaterals which form to bypass the obstructed portal vein with resultant changes in biliary tree termed portal biliopathy or portal cavernoma cholangiopathy. Ultrasound with Doppler, computed tomography, magnetic resonance cholangiography and magnetic resonance portovenography are non-invasive techniques which can provide a comprehensive analysis of degree and extent of EHPVO, collaterals and bile duct abnormalities. These can also be used to assess in surgical planning as well screening for shunt patency in post-operative patients. The multitude of changes and complications seen in EHPVO can be addressed by various radiological interventional procedures. The myriad of symptoms arising secondary to vascular, biliary, visceral and neurocognitive changes in EHPVO can be managed by various radiological interventions like transjugular intra-hepatic portosystemic shunt, percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage, partial splenic embolization, balloon occluded retrograde obliteration of portosystemic shunt(PSS) and revision of PSS. | Sudheer S Pargewar Saloni N Desai S Rajesh Vaibhav P Singh Ankur Arora Amar Mukund | 2016 | World Journal of Radiology2016,8,6: | 8
Transcranial magnetic stimulation for geriatric depression: Promises and pitfalls显示文摘As the global population gets older, depression in the elderly is emerging as an important health issue. A major challenge in treating geriatric depression is the lack of robust efficacy for many treatments that are of significant benefit to depressed working age adults. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(r TMS) is a novel physical treatment approach used mostly in working age adults with depression. Many TMS trials and clinics continue to exclude the elderly from treatment citing lack of evidence in this age group. In this review, we appraise the evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of rT MS in the elderly. A consistent observation supporting a high degree of tolerability and safety among the elderly patients emerged across the Randomised Controlled Trials and the uncontrolled trials. Further, there is no reliable evidence negating the utility of rT MS in the elderly with depression. We also identified several factors other than age that moderate the observed variations in the efficacy of rT MS in the elderly. These factors include but not limited to:(1) brain atrophy;(2) intensity and number of pulses(dose-response relationship); and(3) clinical profile of patients. On the basis of the current evidence, the practice of excluding elderly patients from TMS clinics and trials cannot be supported. | Priyadharshini Sabesan Sudheer Lankappa Najat Khalifa Vasudevan Krishnan Rahul Gandhi Lena Palaniyappan | 2015 | World Journal of Psychiatry2015,5,2: | 7
Novel interactions of mitochondria and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in alcohol mediated liver disease显示文摘Mitochondrial dysfunction is known to be a contributing factor to a number of diseases including chronic alcohol induced liver injury. While there is a detailed understanding of the metabolic pathways and proteins of the liver mitochondrion, little is known regarding how changes in the mitochondrial proteome may contribute to the development of hepatic pathologies. Emerging evidence indicates that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species disrupt mitochondrial function through post-translational modifications to the mitochondrial proteome. Indeed, various new affinity labeling reagents are available to test the hypothesis that post-translational modification of proteins by reactive species contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction and alcoholic fatty liver disease. Specialized proteomic techniques are also now available, which allow for identification of defects in the assembly of multi-protein complexes in mitochondria and the resolution of the highly hydrophobic proteins of the inner membrane. In this review knowledge gained from the study of changes to the mitochondrial proteome in alcoholic hepatotoxicity will be described and placed into a mechanistic framework to increase understanding of the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in liver disease. | Sudheer K Mantena Adrienne L King Kelly K Andringa Aimee Landar Victor Darley-Usmar Shannon M Bailey | 2007 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,37: | 7
Silver nanoparticles tolerant bacteria from sewage environment显示文摘Silver nanoparticle (SNP) is a threat to soil, water and human health.Protection of environment from silver nanoparticles is a major concern.A sewage isolate,Bacillus pumilus treated with SNPs showed similar growth kinetics to that without nanoparticles.A reduction in the amount of exopolysaccharides was observed after SNPs-B.pumilus culture supernatant interaction. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) peaks for the exopolysaccharides extracted from the bacterial culture supernatant and the interacted SNPs were almost similar. The exopolysaccharide capping of the SNPs was confirmed by UV-Visible,FT-IR and X-ray diffraction analysis. The study of bacterial exopolysaccharides capped SNPs with E.coli,S.aureus and M.luteus showed less toxicity compared to uncoated SNPs.Our studies suggested that the capping of nanoparticles by bacterially produced exopolysaccharides serve as the probable mechanism of tolerance. | Sudheer Khan Amitava Mukherjee Natarajan Chandrasekaran | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,2: | 3
Improving Performance of a Distributed File System Using a Speculative Semantics-Based Algorithm显示文摘File-sharing semantics is used by the file systems for sharing data among concurrent client processes in a consistent manner. Session semantics is a widely used file-sharing semantics in Distributed File Systems(DFSs). The main disadvantage of session semantics is that writes to an open file are visible to the concurrent client processes only during their next session. Recently, 'linearizability semantics' was introduced in Blob Seer DFS, in which a Read Client Process(RCP) can read only a previous version of a binary large object(blob), while update operations are carried out on that blob in a concurrent manner. In this paper, we propose a new type of file-sharing semantics, namely 'speculative semantics', which permits writes to an open file to be visible to other concurrent processes provided that data consistency is not affected. In addition, we propose a new read algorithm for DFSs based on speculative semantics and a new performance measurement metric called Currency. The experimental results obtained using Blob Seer DFS indicate that the proposed read algorithm performs better than the existing read algorithm of Blob Seer DFS. | Talluri Lakshmi Siva Rama Krishna Thirumalaisamy Ragunathan Sudheer Kumar Battula | 2015 | Tsinghua Science and Technology2015,20,6: | 2
