Preliminary study on the antibacterial activity of some medicinal plants of Khuzestan(Iran)显示文摘Objective:To search for antimicrobial agents among natural products. Methods:Ethanolic extracts of 4 plant species, including Beta vulgaris L.(Chenopodiaceae),Amaranthus graecizans (A.graecizans) L.(Amaranthaceae),Rumex obtusifolius(R.obtusifolius) L.and Polygonum patulum(P.patulum) M.B.(Polygonaceae),were evaluated for antibacterial activity using agar disc diffusion method against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria[Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P.aeruginosa),Listeria monocytogenes(L.monocytogenes).Staphylococcus epidermidis(S.epidermidis),Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus),Klebsiella pneumoniae(K. pneumoniae),Salmonella typhi(S.typhi),Bacillus cereus(B.cereus).Bacillus anthracis(B. anthracis),Escherichia coli(E.coli) and Streptococcus pyogenes(Str.pyogenes)].These extracts were obtained from aerial parts of the used plants. Results:The majority of these extracts had inhibitory effect at different concentrations(0.05 g/mL,0.10 g/mL,0.20 g/mL and 0.40 g/mL) against above mentioned bacteria.E.coli was the most resistant strain. The highest inhibitory zone was showed by ethanolic extract of P.patulum against Str.pyogenes(28 mm) and followed by ethanolic extract of B.vulgaris against S.epidermidis(23 mm).The extract of A.graecizans didn’t show inhibitory activity except at 0.40 g/mL against B.cereus.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) values of R.obtusifolius extract that was measured against Str.pyogenes were equal(MIC=MBC=5.00mg/mL).Conclusion: The findings of this study could also be as new source for antibiotics discovery and infection treatment. | Haniyeh Koochak Seyyed Mansour Seyyednejad Hussein Motamedi | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,3: | 10
Antibacterial activity of eight Iranian plant extracts against methicillin and cefixime restistant Staphylococcous aureus strains显示文摘Objective:To assess the antibacterial activity of eight Iranian plant extracts against Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) strains which were isolated from infected patients. Methods: The studied strains were isolated from urine, stool, blood and wound of infected patients and identified by biochemical tests. In further, the antibacterial activity of 8 ethanolic local plant extracts including Querqus brantii(Q.brantii),Ziziphus spina-christi(Z.spina-christi),Peganum harmala(P.harmala),Oliveira decumbens(O.decumbens),Galium tricornutum(G.tricornutum), Vitex pseudo negundo(Vi.pseudo negundo),Salvia officinalis(S.officinalis),Vaccaria pyramidata (V.pyramidata) were then evaluated using agar disc diffusion method. Results:A total of 9 isolates were isolated and identified as S.aureus.Antibacterial profile of the strains showed that the strains were resistant to methicillin and cefixime. The highest antibacterial activity against the studied strains were belong to Q.brantii,P.harmala,Z.spina-christi and O.decumbens vent extracts with 11-40 mm,15-28 mm,8-26 mm and 10-20 mm of diameters, respectively. Intermediate antibacterial activity was exhibited by G.tricornutum and Vi.pseudo negundo against some of the studied strains with 7-20 mm and 7-13 mm of diameters, respectively. Noteworthy, out of 9 studied strains;6 and 2 of them were resistant to the G.tricornutum and Vi. pseudo negundo extracts, respectively. The S.officinalis and Va.pyramidata, however, showed no antibacterial activity against the studied strains. Conclusions:The Q.brantii,P.harmala,Z. spina-christi and O.decumbens extracts were shown to possess strong antibacterial activity against methicillin and cefixime resistant S.aureus strains and can be considered as the promising natural antibiotics for treating the studied strains. | Morteza Shojaei Moghadam Susan Maleki Esmaeil Darabpour Hossein Motamedi Seyyed Mansour Seyyed Nejad | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,4: | 7
In vitro assay for the anti-brucella activity of medicinal plants against tetracycline-resistant Brucella melitensis显示文摘Brucellosis, a zoonosis caused by four species of brucella, has a high morbidity. Brucella melitensis is the main causative agent of brucellosis in both human and small ruminants. As an alternative to conventional antibiotics, medicinal plants are valuable resources for new agents against antibiotic-resistant strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the usage of native plants for brucellosis treatment. For this purpose, the anti-brucella activities of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Salvia sclarea, Oliveria decumbens, Ferulago angulata, Vitex pseudo-negundo, Teucrium polium, Plantago ovata, Cordia myxa, and Crocus sativus were assessed. The activity against a resistant Br. melitensis strain was determined by disc diffusion method at various concentrations from 50-400 mg/ml. Antibiotic discs were also used as a control. Among the evaluated herbs, six plant (Salvia sclarea, Oliveria decumbens, Ferulago angulata, Vitex pseudo-negundo, Teucrium polium, and Crocus sativus) showed anti-brucella activity. Oliveria de- cumbens was chosen as the most effective plant for further studies. A tested isolate exhibited resistance to tetracycline, nafcillin, oxacillin, methicillin, and colistin. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for Oliveria decumbens against resistant Br. melitensis were the same (5 mg/ml), and for gentamicin they were both 2 mg/ml. Time-kill kinetics for a methanolic extract of Oliveria decumbens was 7 h whereas for an ethanolic extract it was 28 h. Also, Oliveria decumbens extracts showed a synergistic effect in combination with doxycycline and tetracycline. In general, the similar values of MIC and MBC for Oliveria decumbens suggest that these extracts could act as bactericidal agents against Br. melitensis. In addition to Oliveria decumbens, Crocus sativus and Salvia sclarea also had good anti-brucella activity and these should be considered for further study. | Hossein MOTAMEDI Esmaeil DARABPOUR Mahnaz GHOLIPOUR Seyyed Mansour SEYYED NEJAD | 2010 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2010,11,7: | 6
An in vitro evaluation of novel NHA/zircon plasma coating on 316L stainless steel dental implant显示文摘The surface characteristics of an implant that influence the speed and strength of osseointegration include crystal structure and bioactivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bioactivity of a novel natural hydroxyapatite/zircon(NHA/zircon) nanobiocomposite coating on 316L stainless steel(SS) dental implants soaking in simulated body fluid. A novel NHA/zircon nanobiocomposite was fabricated with 0(control),5, 10, and 15 wt% of zircon in NHA using ball mill for 1 h. The composite mixture was coated on SS implants using a plasma spray method.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was used to evaluate surface morphology, and X-ray diffraction(XRD) was used to analyze phase composition and crystallinity(Xc). Further, calcium ion release was measured to evaluate the coated nanobiocomposite samples. The prepared NHA/zircon coating had a nanoscale morphological structure with a mean crystallite size of 30–40 nm in diameter and a bone-like composition, which is similar to that of the biological apatite of a bone. For the prepared NHA powder, high bioactivity was observed owing to the formation of apatite crystals on its surface. Both minimum crystallinity(Xc=41.1%) and maximum bioactivity occurred in the sample containing 10 wt% of zircon because of minimum Xcand maximum biodegradation of the coating sample. | Ebrahim Karamian Mahmood Reza Kalantar Motamedi Amirsalar Khandan Parisa Soltani Sahel Maghsoudi | 2014 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2014,24,2: | 6
Antimicrobial properties of Teucrium polium against some clinical pathogens显示文摘Objective:To explore the antibacterial effect of the alcoholic extracts of aerial parts of Teucrium polium, native in Iran on some pathogenic bacteria. Methods:Antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract(50 to 400 mg/mL) and methanolic extract(400 and 600 mg/mL) was evaluated by disc diffusion method. Results:The ethanolic extract results showed that Bacillus anthracis was the most sensitive species, while Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis were more resistant than others. In the case of the methanolic extract,Bordetella bronchiseptica was the most sensitive and Proteus mirabilis and Arcanobacterium pyogenes were the most resistant species. The hydroalcoholic extract of Teucrium polium had a relatively satisfactory effect on Salmonella typhi. The minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi was 40 mg/mL and Bordetella bronchiseptica and Bacillus anthracis was 10 mg/mL.The minimal bactericidal concentration(MBC) against Bacillus anthracis was 10 mg/mL while against other species were not found(>200 mg/mL).The methanolic extract had also synergistic effect with methicillin, vancomycin against Staphylococcus aureus and with novobiocin against Salmonella typhi. Conclusions:These results suggest that this plant contains relatively good antibacterial activity and it can be used as a source of antiseptic compounds for medicinal uses. | Esmaeil Darabpour Hossein Motamedi Seyyed Mansour Seyyed Nejad | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,2: | 4
A survey on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis,Alcea rosea L.and Malva neglecta Wallr as antibacterial agents显示文摘Objective:To guide for selection of plants with antibacterial activity for further phytochemical works on the isolation and identification of the active compounds. Methods:Ethanolic extracts of 3 species from Malvaceae family were evaluated by agar disc diffusion method for antibacterial activity against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Listeria monocytogenes,Staphylococcus epidermidis.Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae.Salmonella typhi,Bacillus cereus.Bacillus anthracis,Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pyogenes). The extracts were obtained from aerial parts of Hibiscus rosa(H. rosa)-sinensis(leaf and flower),Alcea rosea(A.rosea) L.(leaf and flower) and Malva neglecta(M. neglecta) Wallr(flower). Results:These extracts had inhibitory effects at different concentrations (0.05,0.10,0.20 and 0.40 g/mL) against above mentioned bacteria.Escherichia coli was the most resistant strain. The highest inhibitory zone was showed by ethanolic extract of M.neglecta against Staphylococcus epidermidis(22 mm) and followed by ethanolic extract from flower of H.rosa against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus(20 mm).The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration(MBC) values against Staphylococcus epidermidis were equal(M1C=MBC=5 mg/mL for M.neglecta extract and for H. rosa extract MIC=MBC=20 mg/mL).Conclusions:These findings suggest that these native plants have good antibacterial properties that can be used for infection control and treatment and could also be as new source for antibiotics discovery and infection treatment. | Seyyed Mansour Seyyednejad Haniyeh Koochak Esmaeil Darabpour Hossein Motamedi | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,5: | 4
Evaluation of fatigue and rutting properties of asphalt binderand mastic modified by synthesized polyurethane显示文摘Fatigue and rutting phenomena are major distresses in asphalt pavements.Asphalt mixture properties are highly dependent upon the asphalt binder and the mastic behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavior of the asphalt binder and the mastic, modified by the synthesized polyurethane,at high and intermediate temperatures. The filler/asphalt binder ratio(by weight)was 1.0.The dynamic shear rheometer(DSR)was used to measure fatigue(G^(*)sinδ)and rutting(G^(*)/sinδ)parameters.In this study, the multiple stress creepandrecovery(MSCR)testwasalso utilizedto calculate the ruttingpotential of theasphalt binder and themastic.Parameters of the non-recoverable compliance(Jnr)and the percentage recovery(%)were evaluated at high temperatures. The obtained results indicated that the synthesizedpolyurethaneimproved the ruttingandfatigue properties.Therewasa significant correlation between the asphalt binder and the mastic in terms of the complex modulus(R^(2)=0.9958),rutting(R^(2)=0.9944),and the non-recoverable compliance(R^(2)=0.9707).For the fatigue parameter(R^(2)=0.9852),the complex modulus(R^(2)=0.9855),and the phase angle(R^(2)=0.8262),significant relationships were observed between the asphalt binder and mastic samples at intermediate temperatures.Overall, the chemical reaction between the filler and the asphalt binder could be effective in different behaviors of the mastic and asphalt binder.Therewasa 112%-164%increase in the G^(*)sinδparameter formastics, compared to that of the asphalt binder. The complex modulus was 6 times higher by adding the filler content. | Mana Motamedi Gholamali Shafabakhsh Mohammad Azadi | 2021 | Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2021,8,6: | 3

Comparison of Immune Responses against FMD by a DNA Vaccine Encoding the FMDV/O/IRN/2007 VP1 Gene and the Conventional Inactivated Vaccine in an Animal Model显示文摘Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is highly contagious and responsible for huge outbreaks among cloven hoofed animals. The aim of the present study is to evaluate a plasmid DNA immunization system that expresses the FMDV/O/IRN/2007 VP1 gene and compare it with the conventional inactivated vaccine in an animal model. The VP1 gene was sub-cloned into the unique Kpn I and BamH I cloning sites of the pcDNA3.1+ and pEGFP-N1 vectors to construct the VP1 gene cassettes. The transfected BHKT7 cells with sub-cloned pEGFP-N1-VP1 vector expressed GFP-VP1 fusion protein and displayed more green fluorescence spots than the transfected BHKT7 cells with pEGFP-N1 vector, which solely expressed the GFP protein. Six mice groups were respectively immunized by the sub-cloned pcDNA3.1+-VP1 gene cassette as the DNA vaccine, DNA vaccine and PCMV-SPORT-GMCSF vector (as molecular adjuvant) together, conventional vaccine, PBS (as negative control), pcDNA3.1+ vector (as control group) and PCMV-SPORT vector that contained the GMCSF gene (as control group). Significant neutralizing antibody responses were induced in the mice which were immunized using plasmid vectors expressing the VP1 and GMCSF genes together, the DNA vaccine alone and the conventional inactivated vaccine (P<0.05). Co-administration of DNA vaccine and GMCSF gene improved neutralizing antibody response in comparison with administration of the DNA vaccine alone, but this response was the most for the conventional vaccine group. However, induction of humeral immunity response in the conventional vaccine group was more protective than for the DNA vaccine, but T-cell proliferation and IFN-γ concentration were the most in DNA vaccine with the GMCSF gene. Therefore the group that was vaccinated by DNA vaccine with the GMCSF gene, showed protective neutralizing antibody response and the most Th1 cellular immunity. | Farahnaz Motamedi Sedeh Hoorieh Soleimanjahi AmirReza Jalilian Homayoon Mahravani | 2012 | Virologica Sinica2012,27,5: | 2
