Progress in the stratigraphy and geochronology of the Shuidonggou site,Ningxia,North China显示文摘In the past years we carried out further stratigraphy division in field and it is found that rich stone artifacts can be found in fluvial-shallow lake-alluvial sediments on the terrace Ⅱ of Biangou River, in Shuidonggou site, Ningxia and they are SDG1, 2 and 7. More luminescence and AMS 14C dating in laboratory show that Paleolithic culture develops during the Upper Paleolithic period with ages of 35―20 ka. The Paleolithic culture of SDG 1 is a little earlier than that of SDG 2 similar to SDG 7. The sandy sediments on terrace Ⅱ of Biangou River deposits in the past 72―18 ka, corresponding to Last Glacial. SDG2 has a stable sedimentary environment, resulting in the continuous stratigraphy, thickest deposits and rich environment and culture information, which can be regarded as the important and classic paleoanthropological section of Late Pleistocene in this region.LIU DeCheng WANG XuLong GAO Xing XIA ZhengKai PEI ShuWen CHEN FuYou WANG HuiMing 2009Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,21:13
A Review of Research on Warm-Sector Heavy Rainfall in China显示文摘Warm-sector heavy rainfall (WSHR) events in China have been investigated for many years. Studies have investigated the synoptic weather conditions during WSHR formation, the categories and general features, the triggering mechanism, and structural features of mesoscale convective systems during these rainfall events. The main results of WSHR studies in recent years are summarized in this paper. However, WSHR caused by micro- to mesoscale systems often occurs abruptly and locally, making both numerical model predictions and objective forecasts difficult. Further research is needed in three areas:(1) The mechanisms controlling WSHR events need to be understood to clarify the specific effects of various factors and indicate the influences of these factors under different synoptic background circulations. This would enable an understanding of the mechanisms of formation, maintenance, and organization of the convections in WSHR events.(2) In addition to South China, WSHR events also occur during the concentrated summer precipitation in the Yangtze River-Huaihe River Valley and North China. A high spatial and temporal resolution dataset should be used to analyze the distribution and environmental conditions, and to further compare the differences and similarities of the triggering and maintenance mechanisms of WSHR events in different regions.(3) More studies of the mechanisms are required, as well as improvements to the model initial conditions and physical processes based on multi-source observations, especially the description of the triggering process and the microphysical parameterization. This will improve the numerical prediction of WSHR events.Jianhua SUN Yuanchun ZHANG Ruixin LIU Shenming FU Fuyou TIAN 2019Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2019,36,12:13
Analysis of sedimentary-geomorphologic variation and the living environment of hominids at the Shuidonggou Paleolithic site显示文摘Shuidonggou is one of the most important Upper Paleolithic sites in North China. Due to the presence of rich human remains, animal fossils, abundant sporopollen and unique geological sequence,it is the type site for Late Pleistocene to Holocene human occupation and environmental change in the Ningxia-Inner Mongolia region. Many scholars suggest that the site should be named the 'Shuidong-gou Formation' of Late Pleistocene in North China. Dating results indicate that ancient human activities at the site took place 30―24 ka (Marine Isotope Stage MIS 3). The climate at that time was warmer and moister than present day,and adequate precipitation led to the formation of water pack depressions where broad-leaf trees and sparse forest vegetations,as well as herbivorous animals flourished,mak-ing the area suitable for early human hunting, gathering and survival. The Neolithic human occupation happened 9―5 ka at the site, while similar environmental conditions with MIS3 occurred. The absence of human activity record in the region during the Last Glacial Maximum (MIS2) suggests that the envi-ronment was too harsh for humans to live there.GAO Xing YUAN BaoYin PEI ShuWen WANG HuiMin CHEN FuYou FENG XingWu 2008Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,13:12
Modern human behaviors during the late stage of the MIS3 and the broad spectrum revolution:Evidence from a Shuidonggou Late Paleolithic site显示文摘The last glacial period was vital for the distribution and evolution of early modern humans in Asia. The Shuidonggou Late Paleolithic site, dated at 30-20 ka BP, accumulated cultural remains during the important late stage of MIS 3 period in the last glacial. These remains represent characteristics of typical Late Paleolithic conditions in North China:high degree of standardization and morphological variability of tool types, exploitation of bone materials, systematic use of body decorations, extensive use of earth-pit hearths, distinct functional spatial organization within habitations, and conversion of subsistence patterns. These characteristics illustrate early modern human behaviors during the late MIS3 period, and provide clues and perspectives for the analysis of early modern human origins in China. At the same time, the conversion of subsistence patterns is considered to be a combination of multiple early modern human behaviors, as well as the result of the Broad Spectrum Revolution. In this paper, we argue for the dynamic mechanism of Broad Spectrum Revolution from a human behavioral and ecological perspective.GUAN Ying GAO Xing LI Feng PEI ShuWen CHEN FuYou ZHOU ZhenYu 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,4:10
Cloud services with big data provide a solution for monitoring and tracking sustainable development goals显示文摘To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),high-quality data are needed to inform the formulation of policies and investment decisions,to monitor progress towards the SDGs and to evaluate the impacts of policies. However, the data landscape is changing. With emerging big data and cloud-based services, there are new opportunities for data collection, influencing both official data collection processes and the operation of the programmes they monitor. This paper uses cases and examples to explore the potential of crowdsourcing and public earth observation(EO)data products for monitoring and tracking the SDGs.This paper suggests that cloud-based services that integrate crowdsourcing and public EO data products provide cost-effective solutions for monitoring and tracking the SDGs,particularly for low-income countries. The paper also discusses the challenges of using cloud services and big data for SDG monitoring.Validation and quality control of public EO data is very important;otherwise, the user will be unable to assess the quality of the data or use it with confidence.Bingfang Wu Fuyou Tian Miao Zhang Hongwei Zeng Yuan Zeng 2020Geography and Sustainability2020,1,1:9
Synthesis of NaYF_4:Nd@NaLuF_4@SiO_2@PS colloids for fluorescence imaging in the second biological window显示文摘Nd doped nanoparticles is commonly used as bioimaging agents but presents poor stability. Here, a polymer coating is applied to NaYF4:Nd nanoparticles using a versatile step-by-step coating strategy. The as-synthesized NaYF_4:Nd@NaLuF_4@SiO_2@PS colloids show good stability in various polar solvent and are very stable in water at least for 6 months. These NaYF_4:Nd@NaLuF_4@SiO_2@PS colloids can exhibit strong down converting photoluminescence when excited by 808 nm lasers. Moreover, these NaYF_4:Nd@NaLuF_4@SiO_2@PS colloids accumulate in liver of mice when used as bio-imaging agents. which exhibit strong fluorescence luminescence in NIR Ⅱ window.Dongpeng Yang Cong Cao Wei Feng Chunhui Huang Fuyou Li 2018Journal of Rare Earths2018,36,2:9
Technology diffusion and population migration reflected in blade technologies in northern China in the Late Pleistocene显示文摘In recent years, the origin and evolution of modern human behaviors have become a common topic of research in Paleolithic archaeology. One important part of modern human behavior, blade technology, was once thought to be unique to modern humans. Recent studies have suggested that variations in blade technology do not fully correspond to modern populations. However, the standardization, diversity, discontinuity in terms of time distribution, and differences in spatial distribution of blade technology give it an important role in discussions of modes of adaptation, diffusion of technology, and population migration of hominins. By categorizing the major blade assemblages in China, we show that there were two blade reduction methods in northern China: the Levallois method and the prismatic method. Dating back 40000–30000 years, the Levallois and prismatic blade method combined to form the characteristics of the early stage of the Upper Paleolithic. Artifacts bearing such characteristics are located in Northwest China, Northeast China, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The unearthed blades are similar in technological organization and are connected geographically with those discovered in Siberia and Mongolia, which also indicates a distinct border from those discovered in northern China. This fact is suggestive of population immigration. About 29000–25000 years ago, a combination of prismatic blades and microblades was developed in the hinterland of China; however whether it can be regarded as the representative of population migration or only a technological adaption remains undetermined. We suggest that the system of production of different blades should be distinguished in the study of blade assemblages and that different blade methods should not be integrated into a single technical system to discuss technology diffusion and population dispersal.LI Feng CHEN FuYou WANG YingHua GAO Xing 2016Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,8:9
An engraved artifact from Shuidonggou,an Early Late Paleolithic Site in Northwest China显示文摘Cognition and symbolic thinking are viewed as important features of modern human behavior.Engraved objects are seen as a hallmark of cognition and symbolism, and even as evidence for language.Accumulated evidences including engraved bones, ochre, ostrich eggshells and stone artifacts were unearthed from Africa,Europe,Levant even Siberia Paleolithic sites. But the archaeological evidence for this, including beads, ornaments, burials, performed objects and engraved objects,is rarely discovered in the Pleistocene of East Asia. The present paper reports an engraved stone object unearthed in the Early Late Paleolithic levels about 30 ka BP at the Shuidonggou site(SDG) in northwestern China. It was unearthed in the 1980's excavation from Lower culture unit of SDG1 but was identified in 2011 when the first author of this article observed the collection from the 1980's excavations stored in the Institute of Archaeology of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region for further detailed lithic analysis. This lithic artifact is the first engraved non-organic object of the Paleolithic period found in China. In order to clarify the details of the incisions and to document the human intentional modifications,we used a KEYENCE VHX-600 Digital Microscope to measure and observe all the incisions in 3-dimensional perspective.Comparing the natural cracks and analyzing many details of the incisions,we argue that incisions on this stone artifact are the result of intentional behaviors by ancient humans. Also,we exclude the possible other causes including animal-induced damages,post-depositional phenomenon and unintentional by-products.Combining all these features,we suggest that the incisions were made by an intentional behavior and were probably of a non-utilitarian character.Because the nature of most other engraved objects in China is debate,we cannot get a clear scenario of the emergence and progress of modern human behavior in North China. But we infer the possible existence of a counting or recording system,or other symbolic behaviors, which reflect considerably evolved cognitive capacities or modern human behavior in the Early Late Paleolithic of East Asia.PENG Fei GAO Xing WANG HuiMin CHEN FuYou LIU DeCheng PEI ShuWen 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,35:8
Warm-Season Diurnal Variations of Total, Stratiform, Convective, and Extreme Hourly Precipitation over Central and Eastern China显示文摘Diurnal variations in amount, frequency and intensity of warm-season hourly precipitation(HP) at seven levels, which are defined as HP 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 mm, are revealed based on no less than 30 years of hourly rain-gauge observations at national stations over central and eastern China(CEC). This study investigates the variations, relationships, differences and similarities of total, stratiform, convective and extreme HP over the entire CEC and various subregions. Results indicate that the variations in the amount and frequency of HP at the seven levels over the entire CEC all display a bimodal feature. For various regions, the variations of total HP mostly feature two peaks, while convective HP mainly occurs in the late afternoon and determines the diurnal variation of total HP intensity. On the basis of the primary peak time periods of HP frequency at all levels over different subregions, the variations can be classified into three main categories: late-afternoon primary peak, nocturnal primary peak, and time-shifting primary peak. However, the variations over some coastal regions like the Liaodong Peninsula, the Shandong Peninsula, and the coastal regions of Guangdong, distinctly differ from those over their corresponding larger regions. Overall, the normalized diurnal variation amplitude of amount and frequency increases with the increasing HP intensity; convective precipitation can be represented by HP 10 mm; and the intensity of HP 50 mm is slightly larger during the nighttime than during the daytime over the entire CEC. In northern China, diurnal variation in HP 5 mm can represent well that in convective precipitation.Yongguang ZHENG Yanduo GONG Jiong CHEN Fuyou TIAN 2019Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2019,36,2:6
Characterization of 500 Chinese patients with cervical esophageal cancer by clinicopathological and treatment outcomes显示文摘Objective: There are no comprehensive studies on survival outcomes and optimal treatment protocols for cervical esophageal cancer(CEC), due to its rare clinical prevalence. Our objective was to determine the relationship between pathological characteristics, treatment protocols, and survival outcomes in Chinese CEC patients. Methods: A total of 500 Chinese CEC patients were selected from our 500,000 esophageal and gastric cardia carcinoma database(1973–2018). There were two main groups: patients treated with surgery, and patients receiving non-surgical treatments(radiotherapy, radiochemotherapy, and chemotherapy). The Chi-square test and Kaplan–Meier method were used to compare the continuous variables and survival. Results: Among the 500 CEC patients, 278(55.6%) were male, and the median age was 60.9 ± 9.4 years. A total of 496 patients(99.2%) were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. In 171(34.2%) patients who received surgery, 22(12.9%) had undergone laryngectomy. In 322(64.4%) patients who received non-surgical treatments, 245(76.1%) received radiotherapy. Stratified survival analysis showed that only T stage was related with survival outcomes for CEC patients in the surgical group, and the outcomes between laryngectomy and non-laryngectomy patients were similar. It was noteworthy that the 5-year survival rate was similar in CEC patients among the different groups treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or radiochemotherapy(P = 0.244). Conclusions: The CEC patients had similar survival outcomes after curative esophagectomy and radiotherapy, including those with or without total laryngectomy. These findings suggest that radiotherapy could be the initial choice for treatment of Chinese CEC patients.Peinan Chen Xueke Zhao Fuyou Zhou Xin Song Shoujia Hu Yan Jin Xianzeng Wang Xuena Han ZongminFan Ran Wang Bei Li Wenli Han Panpan Wang Jilin Li Lixin Wan Liguo Zhang Qide Bao Fubao Chang Yanru Qin Zhiwei Chang Jianwei Ku Haijun Yang Ling Yuan Jingli Ren Xuemin Li Lidong Wang 2020Cancer Biology & Medicine2020,17,1:6
Climate background of the evolution from Paleolithic to Neolithic cultural transition during the last deglaciation in the middle reaches of the Yellow River显示文摘Shizitan in Jixian County, Shanxi Province, is a site of transitional period from Paleolithic to Neolithic. The dating and the sporopollen analysis show that the middle reaches of the Yellow River where the site is located had been maintaining a steppe environment during 35.1-9.4 kaBP, in which, 35.1-17 kaBP belonged to the last glacial. With cold and dry climate, this period featured a desert steppe environment. In the late of this period, the area had a cold and half-humid steppe environment. The 17.0-11.9 kaBP belonged to the early- and mid-period of the last deglaciation. Mild and half-arid steppe alternates with mild and half-arid steppe, with a small amount of deciduous broadleaf species. During the period of 11.9-10.5 kaBP, cold and dry glacial climate appeared once more, featuring a desert steppe environment. During 10.5-9.4 kaBP, it is mild and half-arid, and later transited toward warm and half-humid. The early phase of this period featured a steppe environment and the later transited into aZhengkai Xia Ge Chen Gongwang Zheng Fuyou Chen Junqing Han 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,1:6

Wind estimation around the shipwreck of Oriental Star based on field damage surveys and radar observations显示文摘Based on observational analyses and on-site ground and aerial damage surveys, this work aims to reveal the weather phenomena—especially the wind situation—when Oriental Star capsized in the Yangtze River on June 1, 2015.Results demonstrate that the cruise ship capsized when it encountered strong winds at speeds of at least 31 m s^(-1) near the apex of a bow echo embedded in a squall line. As suggested by the fallen trees within a 2-km radius around the wreck location, such strong winds were likely caused by microburst straight-line wind and/or embedded small vortices, rather than tornadoes.Zhiyong Meng Dan Yao Lanqiang Bai Yongguang Zheng Ming Xue Xiaoling Zhang Kun Zhao Fuyou Tian Mingjun Wang 2016Science Bulletin2016,61,4:5
Optical dating of the Jingshuiwan Paleolithic site of Three Gorges, China显示文摘The Jingshuiwan Paleolithic site occu- pies the second terrace on the right bank of the Yangtze River. The lithic assemblage is characterized by choppers and scrapers made on pebbles and large flakes——the typical lithic industry of South China. Deposits of the site are mainly composed of fluvial sediments. Quartz grains extracted from these fluvial sediments from which the artifacts were un- covered were dated using the optically stimulated luminescence/single-aliquot regenerative-dose tech- nique. The dating results show that ancient human activities at this site took place in the early Upper Pleistocene (ca. 70 ka). The successful age analysis of the Jingshuiwan site is considered as a major break- through in chronological analysis of Paleolithic open site in the Three Gorges region and even in South China. The dates obtained help to establish a more complete chronological framework of the Paleolithic cultural sequence in the region, and bear significant implica- tions in studying modern human origins in China.PEI Shuwen ZHANG Jiafu GAO Xing ZHOU Liping FENG Xingwu CHEN Fuyou 2006Chinese Science Bulletin2006,51,11:4
On the possible use of fire by Homo erectus at Zhoukoudian,China显示文摘For decades, the so-called Peking Man(Homo erectus pekinensis)at Zhoukoudian has been considered to be a hominin that engaged in the controlled production and management of fire. However, relatively recent analyses have cast doubt on this assertion. The most compelling reason for this doubt was the absence of siliceous aggregates in the Zhoukoudian deposits. This study presents evidence establishing the controlled use of fire by Homo erectus pekinensis through analyses of four soil samples sourced from Layers 4 and 6 at Zhoukoudian Locality 1.These results demonstrate that all four specimens contain siliceous aggregates as well as elemental carbon, and the potassium content of the insoluble residues of these specimens ranges between 1.21%and 2.94%.The analyses provide strong evidence of the in situ use of fire by Homo erectus pekinensis.Maohua Zhong Congling Shi Xing Gao Xinzhi Wu Fuyou Chen Shuangquan Zhang Xingkai Zhang John W.Olsen 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,3:4
A Synthesizing Land-cover Classification Method Based on Google Earth Engine: A Case Study in Nzhelele and Levhuvu Catchments, South Africa显示文摘This study designed an approach to derive land-cover in the South Africa with insufficient ground samples, and made a case demonstration in Nzhelele and Levhuvu catchments, South Africa. The method was developed based on an integration of Landsat 8, Sentinel-1, and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission(SRTM) Digital Elevation Model(DEM), and the Google Earth Engine(GEE) platform. Random forest classifier with 300 trees is employed as land-cover classification model. In order to overcome the defect of insufficient ground data, the stratified sampling method was used to generate the training and validation samples from the existing land-cover product. Likewise, in order to recognize different land-cover categories, the percentile and monthly median composites were employed to expand input metrics of random forest classifier. Results showed that the overall accuracy of the land-cover of Nzhelele and Levhuvu catchments, South Africa in 2017–2018 reached to 76.43%. Three important results can be drawn from our research. 1) The participation of Sentinel-1 data can slightly improve overall accuracy of land-cover while its contribution on land-cover classification varied with land types. 2) Under-fitting problem was observed in the training of non-dominant land-cover categories using the random sampling, the stratified sampling method is recommended to make sure the classification accuracy of non-dominant classes. 3) When related reflectance bands participated in the training process, individual Normalized Difference Vegetation index(NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI), Normalized Difference Built-up Index(NDBI) have little effect on final land-cover classification result.ZENG Hongwei WU Bingfang WANG Shuai MUSAKWA Walter TIAN Fuyou MASHIMBYE Zama Eric POONA Nitesh SYNDEY Mavengahama 2020Chinese Geographical Science2020,30,3:4

Fenitized Wall Rock Geochemistry of the First Carbonatite Dyke at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia, China显示文摘The first carbonatite dyke at Bayan Obo is well exposed on the surface for a length and width of approximately 60 m and 1.1–1.5 m, respectively. Along its strike, the fenitized H1(Qs) and H2(Cs) quartzite is replaced by Na-amphiboles, aegirines, and alkali-feldspars, intermittently stretching as far away as 800 m in length. Based on petrographical characteristics, the dyke's fenitized wall rocks are divisible into different zones:(1) outer,(2) middle, and(3) inner. The outer zone is 5–17 m from the NW margin of the dyke. The middle zone is located at 3.5–5 m from the NW margin of the dyke. The inner contact zone is located between direct contact with the dyke and 3.5 m from the dyke. In the outer zone, upon visual examination, no evidence of outcrop fenitization was found and the major elemental rock composition is nearly identical to the unaltered H1 and H2 lithologies. In the thin sections, however, small amounts of Na-amphibole and phlogopite are present. Despite relatively poor development throughout the 5 m of fenitization, the wall rocks have retained at least a small geochemical signature comparable to the original sedimentary protolith. The fenites occurring in the inner zone exhibit distinct variations, not only for the sharp contact at the outcrop scale, but also for variations in major, rare earth elements(REE), and trace elements and Sm-Nd isotope composition. The wall rocks within 3.5 m have undergone strong fenitization, inheriting the geochemical signature derived from the carbonatite dyke. Fenitization in the middle zone was not as strong, at least compared to the inner zone, but was stronger than the outer zone. Compared to some trace elements and REEs, the major elements are relatively immobile during fenitization. The Sm-Nd isotope data for the carbonatite dyke and the adjacent fenitized wall rocks, where the Sm and Nd originate solely from the dyke, plots as a six-point isochron with an age of 1308±56 Ma. This age is identical to that of ore-bearing dolomite carbonatite and the related ore-forming events, indicating that there may be a petrogenetic link between the two. Based on Sr and Nd isotope compositional data, the first carbonatite dyke may be derived from an enriched mantle.WANG Kaiyi ZHANG Jien YU Liangjun FANG Aimin DONG Ce HU Fuyou 2018Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2018,92,2:3
Numerical analysis of stress distribution in the upper arm tissues under an inflatable cuff:Implications for noninvasive blood pressure measurement显示文摘An inflatable cuff wrapped around the upper arm is widely used in noninvasive blood pressure measurement. However, the mechanical interaction between cuff and arm tissues, a factor that potentially affects the accuracy of noninvasive blood pressure measurement, remains rarely addressed. In the present study, finite element(FE) models were constructed to quantify intra-arm stresses generated by cuff compression, aiming to provide some theoretical evidence for identifying factors of importance for blood pressure measurement or explaining clinical observations. Obtained results showed that the simulated tissue stresses were highly sensitive to the distribution of cuff pressure on the arm surface and the contact condition between muscle and bone. In contrast, the magnitude of cuff pressure and small variations in elastic properties of arm soft tissues had little influence on the efficiency of pressure transmission in arm tissues. In particular, it was found that a thickened subcutaneous fat layer in obese subjects significantly reduced the effective pressure transmitted to the brachial artery, which may explain why blood pressure overestimation occurs more frequently in obese subjects in noninvasive blood pressure measurement.Zhipeng Deng Fuyou Liang 2016Acta Mechanica Sinica2016,32,5:3
