| 4 | Oxygation Enhances Growth,Gas Exchange and Salt Tolerance of Vegetable Soybean and Cotton in a Saline Vertisol显示文摘Impacts of salinity become severe when the soil is deficient in oxygen.Oxygation(using aerated water for subsurface drip irrigation of crop) could minimize the impact of salinity on plants under oxygen-limiting soil environments.Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of oxygation(12% air volume/volume of water) on vegetable soybean(moderately salt tolerant) and cotton(salt tolerant) in a salinized vertisol at 2,8,14,20 dS/m ECe.In vegetable soybean,oxygation increased above ground biomass yield and water use efficiency(WUE) by 13% and 22%,respectively,compared with the control.Higher yield with oxygation was accompanied by greater plant height and stem diameter and reduced specific leaf area and leaf Na+ and Cl- concentrations.In cotton,oxygation increased lint yield and WUE by 18% and 16%,respectively,compared with the control,and was accompanied by greater canopy light interception,plant height and stem diameter.Oxygation also led to a greater rate of photosynthesis,higher relative water content in the leaf,reduced crop water stress index and lower leaf water potential.It did not,however,affect leaf Na+ or Cl- concentration.Oxygation invariably increased,whereas salinity reduced the K+:Na+ ratio in the leaves of both species.Oxygation improved yield and WUE performance of salt tolerant and moderately tolerant crops under saline soil environments,and this may have a significant impact for irrigated agriculture where saline soils pose constraints to crop production. | Surya P. | 5 | Controversies in diagnosis and management of Kawasaki disease显示文摘Kawasaki disease(KD) is a common medium vessel systemic vasculitis that usually occurs in small children. It has a predilection for the coronary arteries, but other medium sized arteries can also be involved. The etiology of this disorder remains a mystery. Though typical presentation of KD is quite characteristic, it may also present as incomplete or atypical disease in which case the diagnosis can be very challenging. As both incomplete and atypical forms of KD can be associated with serious coronary artery complications, the pediatrician can ill afford to miss these diagnoses. The American Heart Association has enunciated consensus guidelines to facilitate the clinical diagnosis and treatment of this condition. However, there are still several issues that remain controversial. Intravenous immunoglobulin remains the cornerstone of management but several other treatment modalities, especially glucocorticoids, are increasingly finding favour. | 6 | Nanotherapeutic approaches targeting angiogenesis and immune dysfunction in tumor microenvironment显示文摘Tumor microenvironment(TME) comprising cellular and non-cellular components is a major source of cancer hallmarks.Notably, angiogenesis responsible for normal physiological remodeling process can otherwise harness vessel abnormalities during tumorigenesis eliciting severe therapeutic inefficiency. Currently, FDA approved antiangiogenic drugs have only shown modest clinical success owing to tumor hypoxia, antiangiogenic therapeutic resistance, and limited knowledge in understanding TME. In order to overcome these limitations, targeting angiogenesis combined with immunosuppressive TME could offer potential therapeutic opportunities. Indeed, these therapeutic approaches can be further revisited with the advent of nanotechnology that can target the key cellular components of TME and tumor cells more precisely. Synergetic targeting without eliciting systemic toxicity achieved by integration of antiangiogenic and immunotherapy in a single nanoplatform is vital for therapeutic success. | 7 | Longest duration of retention of video capsule: A case report and literature review显示文摘Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a safe innovative tool for investigating obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, Crohn's disease and other small bowel pathologies. The capsule is usually excreted with faeces within 24-48 h. Retention of capsule rarely occurs, and it usually depends on the indication of VCE. The longest reported case of capsule retention in the literature is 2.5 years. Surgical approach is considered effective to retrieve the retained capsule. We present a case of asymptomatic retention of capsule for four and half years in a 49-year-old man who underwent VCE to explore the cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. It was successfully retrieved endoscopically. | 12 | Biodiversity and Invasibility: Distribution Patterns of Invasive Plant Species in the Himalayas, Nepal显示文摘Invasive plant species are exerting a serious threat to biological diversity in many regions of the world. To understand plant invasions this study aims to test which of the two plant invasiveness hypotheses; ‘low native diversity' vs. ‘high native diversity', is supported by the regional distribution patterns of invasive plant species in the Himalayas,Nepal. This study is based on data retrieved from published literatures and herbarium specimens. The relationship between invasive plant species distribution patterns and that of native plant species is elucidated by scatter plots, as well as by generalized linear models. The native plant species and invasive plant species have similar distribution patterns and the maximum number of invasive plant species is found in the same altitudinal range where the highest richness for native tree species is found. There is a clear trend of higher invasive plant richness in regions where native tree species richness is relatively high.Consequently, the native plant richness is highest in the central phytogeographic region, followed by the eastern and the western regions, respectively. The invasive plant species also follows a similar trend.Additionally, the invasive plant species richness was positively correlated with anthropogenic factors such as human population density and the number of visiting tourists. This study supports the hypothesis that ‘high native diversity' supports or facilitates invasive plant species. | 14 | Differential response of tomato genotypes to Xanthomonas-specific pathogen-associated molecular patterns and correlation with bacterial spot (Xanthomonas perforans) resistance显示文摘Plants depend on innate immune responses to retard the initial spread of pathogens entering through stomata,hydathodes or injuries.These responses are triggered by conserved patterns in pathogen-encoded molecules known as pathogen-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs).Production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)is one of the first responses,and the resulting‘oxidative burst’is considered to be a first line of defense.In this study,we conducted association analyses between ROS production and bacterial spot(BS;Xanthomonas spp.)resistance in 63 genotypes of tomato(Solanum lycopersicum L.).A luminol-based assay was performed on leaf tissues that had been treated with a flagellin 22(flg22),flagellin 28 and a Xanthomonas-specific flg22(flg22-Xac)peptide,to measure PAMP-induced ROS production in each genotype.These genotypes were also assessed for BS disease response by inoculation with Xanthomonas perforans,race T4.Although there was no consistent relationship between peptides used and host response to the BS,there was a significant negative correlation(r=−0.25,P<0.05)between foliar disease severity and ROS production,when flg22-Xac was used.This response could potentially be used to identify the Xanthomonas-specific PRR allele in tomato,and eventually PAMP-triggered immunity loci could be mapped in a segregating population.This has potential significance in tomato improvement. | Krishna Bhattarai Frank J Louws John D Williamson Dilip R Panthee | 2016 | Horticulture Research2016,3,1: | 3 |

| 16 | Distribution Pattern of Vascular Plant Species of Mountains in Nepal and their Fate Against Global Warming显示文摘This study aims to find the altitudinal distribution pattern of vascular plant species reported from high mountain of Nepal(Manang) along the whole Himalayan elevation gradient, and evaluate their fate against climate change. Data was gathered from multiple sources, field investigations, literatures, and herbarium specimens. Altogether, 303 vascular plant species were reported from Manang. We used a published data to calculate distribution range of each species by interpolating between its upper and lower elevation limits. The relationship between elevation and species richness is elucidated by generalized linear model. The consequence of global warming upon Manang's vascular plant species was estimated based on projected temperature change for next century and adiabatic lapse rate along the elevation gradient of the Himalayas. The vascular plant species richness has a unimodel relationship with elevation along the whole elevation gradient of Nepal as well as in three biogeographical regions of Nepal. Vascular plants of Manang are found distributed from low land Terai to high alpine regions of Nepal and their elevation distribution range varies from 200 to 4700 m. Out of 303 vascular plants of Manang, only seven species might be affected if temperature increase by 1.5°C, whereas at least 70 species will be affected with 5°C temperature increased. | 17 | Factors determining the side of approach for clipping ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm via supraorbital eyebrow keyhole approach显示文摘Purpose:The purpose of this study was to review the microsurgical anatomy and clipping of ruptured anterior communicating artery(AComA)aneurysms and to plan and avoid complications before operation.Methods:A total of 523 cases of cerebral aneurysms admitted to the neurosurgery department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University from September 2010 to October 2018 were analyzed retrospectively.Among them,85 patients had ruptured AComA aneurysms.This study was limited to 85 of these cases,whose satisfactory preoperative angiographic diagnostic films can be retrieved from the hospital database system because of the need for detailed review.Results:We performed supraorbital eyebrow keyhole approach(SOEK)craniotomy in 85 patients to clip 85 AComA aneurysms,in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH).Patients’mean age was(52.69±9.94)years(range,28e78 years).The proportions of small,medium and large aneurysms were 83.5%,15.3%,and 1.2%,respectively.The average size of the aneurysms was(5.07±2.36)mm.There were 77.8% of patients with inferior aneurysms and 81.3% of patients with superior aneurysms achieved good results.There was a significant correlation between A1 dominance and operation method(p<0.001).There was no significant relationship between surgical approach and aneurysm projection or A2 plane(p=0.157&p=0.318).Conclusion:Regardless of whether the A2 plane is open or closed,the A1 dominant side is still a better choice for accessing AComA aneurysms to avoid dangerous premature bleeding. | Robin Bhattarai Chao-Feng Liang Chuan Chen Hui Wang Teng-Chao Huang Ying Guo | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Traumatology2020,23,1: | 3 |

| 19 | Magnesium incorporated chitosan based scaffolds for tissue engineering applications显示文摘Chitosan based porous scaffolds are of great interest in biomedical applications especially in tissue engineering because of their excellent biocompatibility in vivo,controllable degradation rate and tailorable mechanical properties.This paper presents a study of the fabrication and characterization of bioactive scaffolds made of chitosan(CS),carboxymethyl chitosan(CMC)and magnesium gluconate(MgG).Scaffolds were fabricated by subsequent freezing-induced phase separation and lyophilization of polyelectrolyte complexes of CS,CMC and MgG.The scaffolds possess uniform porosity with highly interconnected pores of 50-250 μm size range.Compressive strengths up to 400 kPa,and elastic moduli up to 5 MPa were obtained.The scaffolds were found to remain intact,retaining their original threedimensional frameworks while testing in in-vitro conditions.These scaffolds exhibited no cytotoxicity to 3T3 fibroblast and osteoblast cells.These observations demonstrate the efficacy of this new approach to preparing scaffold materials suitable for tissue engineering applications. | Udhab Adhikari Nava PRijal Shalil Khanal Devdas Pai Jagannathan Sankar Narayan Bhattarai | 2016 | Bioactive Materials2016,1,2: | 2 |
