1Selection efficiencies for improving drought/salt tolerances and yield using introgression breeding in rice(Oryza sativa L.)显示文摘The backcross(BC) breeding strategy has been increasingly used for developing high yielding varieties with improved abiotic stress tolerances in rice. In this study, 189Huang-Hua-Zhan(HHZ) introgression lines(ILs) developed from three different selection schemes were evaluated for yield related traits under drought stress and non-stress conditions in the target and off-season winter nursery environments to assess the selection efficiency of BC breeding for improving different complex traits, and led us to five important results. The first result indicated that the primary target traits should be selected first in the target environments(TEs) in order to achieve the maximum genetic gain. Secondly, BC breeding for drought tolerance(DT) in rice was almost equally effective by strong phenotypic selection in the main target environments and in the winter-season of Hainan.Thirdly, exploiting genetic diversity in the subspecific gene pools is of great importance for future genetic improvement of complex traits in rice. Fourthly, considerable genetic gain can be effectively achieved by selection for secondary target traits among the ILs with the primary traits. 2Fusarium wilt of banana:Current update and sustainable disease control using classical and essential oils approaches显示文摘Fusarium species were reported to produce biofilms.Biofilms are superficial societies of microbes bounded and endangered by being situated or taking place outside a cell or cells.The most destructive fungal diseases caused by phytopathogens are as a result of biofilms formation.Fusarium wilt of banana(Panama disease)is caused by a soil-borne pathogen called Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.cubense.Fusarium oxysporum occurs in a form of a species complex(FOSC)which encompasses a crowd of strains.Horizontal genetic factor transfer may donate to the observed assortment in pathogenic strains,while sexual reproduction is unknown in the FOSC.Fusarium wilt is a notorious disease on several crops worldwide.Yield loss caused by this pathogen is huge,and significant to destroy crop yields annually,thereby affecting the producer countries in various continents of the world.The disease is also resistant to various synthetic chemical fungicides.However,excessive use of synthetic fungicides during disease control could be lethal to humans,animals,and plants.This calls for alternative eco-friendly management of this disease by targeting the biofilms formation and finally suppressing this devastating phytopathogen.In this review,we,therefore,described the damage caused by Fusarium wilt disease,the concept of filamentous fungal biofilms,classical control strategies,sustainable disease control strategies using essential oils,and prevention and control of vegetables Fusarium wilt diseases.Abubakar Abubakar Ismaila Khairulmazmi Ahmad Yasmeen Siddique Muhammad Aswad Abdul Wahab Abdulaziz Bashir Kutawa Adamu Abdullahi Syazwan Afif Mohd Zobir Arifin Abdu Siti Nor Akmar Abdullah 2023Horticultural Plant Journal2023,9,1:2
3Hydrothermal carbonization of agricultural residues:A case study of the farm residues-based biogas plants显示文摘Hydrothermal carbonization(HTC)of biomass is a promising method to produce carbonaceous materials.The work presented in this article addresses the application of hydrothermal carbonization(HTC)to produce a solid fuel named HTC-Biochar,whose characteristics are comparable to lignite coal.Biogas sludge(SD),maize silage(MS),and barley silage(BS)as a substrates were hydrothermally carbonized in a 1.5 L batch reactor at 200C for 6 h.The effect of mixing ratios of different substrates on HTC was investigated.Chemical compositions and combustion characteristics of hydro-chars obtained from mono-and co-carbonization were evaluated.Result showed that HTC increased carbon contents and higher heating values(HHV)by 1.4–14.4%and 13–36%,respectively.The evolution of the H/C and O/C atomic ratios indicated that dehydration and decarboxylation occurred during hydrothermal carbonization for all samples.Furthermore,a significant synergistic enhancement was observed for HHV and carbon content.A mixing ratio of 1:1 for BS and SD showed the best performance for co-HTC.In summary,hydrothermal co-carbonization is a promising strategy to tailor high-performance hydro-char for energy applications.Samar Seyedsadr Rafat Al Afif Christoph Pfeifer 2018Carbon Resources Conversion2018,1,1:2
4A COMPOUND POISSON MODEL FOR LEARNING DISCRETE BAYESIAN NETWORKS显示文摘We introduce here the concept of Bayesian networks,in compound Poisson model,which provides a graphical modeling framework that encodes the joint probability distribution for a set of random variables within a directed acyclic graph.We suggest an approach proposal which ofers a new mixed implicit estimator.We show that the implicit approach applied in compound Poisson model is very attractive for its ability to understand data and does not require any prior information.A comparative study between learned estimates given by implicit and by standard Bayesian approaches is established.Under some conditions and based on minimal squared error calculations,we show that the mixed implicit estimator is better than the standard Bayesian and the maximum likelihood estimators.We illustrate our approach by considering a simulation study in the context of mobile communication networks.Abdelaziz GHRIBI Afif MASMOUDI 2013Acta Mathematica Scientia2013,33,6:2
5Numerical investigation of entropy generation and heat transfer of pulsating flow in a horizontal channel with an open cavity显示文摘In this study, the entropy generation and the heat transfer of pulsating air flow in a horizontal channel with an open cavity heated from below with uniform temperature distribution are numerically investigated. A numerical method based on finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations. At the inlet of the channel, pulsating velocity is imposed for a range of Strouhal numbers St_p from 0 to 1 and amplitude A_p from 0 to 0.5. The effects of the governing parameters, such as frequency and amplitude of the pulsation, Richardson number, Ri, and aspect ratio of the cavity, L/H, on the flow field, temperature distribution, average Nusselt number and average entropy generation, are numerically analyzed. The results indicate that the heat transfer and entropy generation are strongly affected by the frequency and amplitude of the pulsation and this depends on the Richardson number and aspect ratio of the cavity. 12Enhancement of methane yield from cotton stalks by mechanical pre-treatment显示文摘Cotton stalks(CS)are lignocellulosic agricultural by-products,a potential source for biogas production,but pretreatment must be considered since hydrolysis is the rate-limiting stage for lignocellulosic biomass substrates.This study investigates the feasibility of mechanical pretreatment of CS to enhance methane production.Batch anaerobic digestion of CS samples with particle sizes ranging from 0.5 to 65 mm was carried out in 1 L eudiometer batch digesters for 48 days at 37◦C.Results showed that methane yield was inversely proportional to particle size,and the quality of biogas was good(54.0-55.2%CH_(4)).Significant increases in methane yield were observed with 20.3%and 26%for samples with a particle size of 3 mm and 0.5 mm,respectively,compared to untreated CS.The coefficient of anaerobic energy turnover was relatively low(20.2-25.5%).Reduction of the CS particle size to 3 mm or less is recommended to achieve effective methane conversion and decrease the retention time in an anaerobic digester from 31 to about 25 days.However,to offset the high energy demand required for grinding,further research should be conducted in combining size reduction with chemical and physicochemical pretreatment.Rafat Al Afif Christoph Pfeifer 2021Carbon Resources Conversion2021,4,1:1

15Effectiveness, safety, and drug sustainability of biologics in elderly patients with inflammatory bowel disease: A retrospective study显示文摘BACKGROUND Biologic therapy resulted in a significant positive impact on the management of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) however data on the efficacy and side effects of these therapies in the elderly is scant.AIM To evaluate retrospectively the drug sustainability, effectiveness, and safety of the biologic therapies in the elderly IBD population.METHODS Consecutive elderly(≥ 60 years old) IBD patients, treated with biologics [infliximab(IFX), adalimumab(ADAL), vedolizumab(VDZ), ustekinumab(UST)] followed at the McGill University Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Center were included between January 2000 and 2020.Efficacy was measured by clinical scores at 3, 6-9 and 12-18 mo after initiation of the biologic therapy. Patients completing induction therapy were included. Adverse events(AEs) or serious AE were collected during and within three months of stopping of the biologic therapy.RESULTS We identified a total of 147 elderly patients with IBD treated with biologicals during the study period, including 109 with Crohn’s disease and 38 with ulcerative colitis. Patients received the following biologicals: IFX(28.5%), ADAL(38.7%), VDZ(15.6%), UST(17%). The mean duration of biologic treatment was 157.5(SD = 148) wk. Parallel steroid therapy was given in 34% at baseline,19% at 3 mo, 16.3% at 6-9 mo and 6.5% at 12-18 mo. The remission rates at 3, 6-9 and 12-18 mo were not significantly different among biological therapies. Kaplan-Meyer analysis did not show statistical difference for drug sustainability(P = 0.195), time to adverse event(P = 0.158) or infection rates(P = 0.973) between the four biologics studied. The most common AEs that led to drug discontinuation were loss of response, infusion/injection reaction and infection.CONCLUSION Current biologics were not different regarding drug sustainability, effectiveness, and safety in the elderly IBD population.
