Modelling of multi-bodies in close proximity under water waves——Fluid resonance in narrow gaps显示文摘Viscous fluid model and potential flow model with and without artificial damping force(f=-μV,μ the damping coefficient and V the local averaging flow velocity) are employed in this work to investigate the phenomenon of fluid resonance in narrow gaps between multi-bodies in close proximity under water waves. The numerical results are compared with experimental data available in the literature. The comparison demonstrates that both the viscous fluid model and the potential flow model are able to predict the resonant frequency reasonably well. However the conventional potential flow model(without artificial damping term) significantly over-predicts the wave height in narrow gaps around the resonant frequency. In order to calibrate the appropriate damping coefficient used for the potential model and make it work as well as the viscous fluid model in predicting the resonant wave height in narrow gaps but with little computational efforts, the dependence of damping coefficient μ on the body geometric dimensions is examined considering the parameters of gap width Bg,body draft D,body breadth ratio Br and body number n(n = 2,3),where Br = BB/BA for the case of two bodies(Body A and Body B) with different breadths of BA and BB,respectively. It was confirmed that the damping coefficient used for the potential flow model is not sensitive to the geometric dimensions and spatial arrangement. It was found that μ∈ [0.4,0.5] may guarantee the variation of Hg/H0 with kh to be generally in good agreement with the experimental data and the results of viscous fluid model, where Hg is the excited wave height in narrow gaps under various dimensionless incident wave frequencies kh,H0 is the incident wave height,k = 2π/L is the wave number and h is the water depth. | LU Lin1,2,TENG Bin3,CHENG Liang 4,SUN Liang5 & CHEN XiaoBo6 1 Center for Deepwater Engineering,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 2 State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 3 State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 4 School of Civil and Resource Engineering,The University of Western Australia,Crawly 6003,Australia 5 Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering,Department of Civil Engineering,National University of Singapore,117576,Singapore 6 Research Department,Bureau Veritas,Neuilly-Sur-Seine,92570,France | 2011 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2011,54,1: | 29
Numerical simulations of self-propelled swimming of 3D bionic fish school显示文摘Numerical simulations of self-propelled swimming of a three dimensional bionic fish and fish school in a viscous fluid are carried out. This is done with the assistance of a parallel software package produced for 3D moving boundary problems. This computational fluid dynamics package combines the adaptive multi-grid finite volume method, the immersed boundary method and VOF (volume of fluid) method. By using the package results of the self-propelled swimming of a 3D bionic fish and fish school in a vis- cous fluid are obtained. With comparison to the existing experimental measurements of living fishes, the predicted structure of vortical wakes is in good agreement with the measurements. | WU ChuiJie1 & WANG Liang2 1 State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 2 Research Center for Fluid Dynamics, People’s Liberation Army University of Science and Technology, Nanjing 211101, China | 2009 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,3: | 23
Neuroprotection of aucubin in primary diabetic encephalopathy显示文摘Hippocampal neuronal apoptosis accompanied by impairment of cognitive function occurs in primary diabetic encephalopathy. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective mechanism of the iridoid glycoside, aucubin, using rats (n=8). Diabetes mellitus was induced in the rats by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg body weight). After 65 d, half of the DM rats were administered aucubin (5 mg/kg; i.p.) for 15 d, yielding treatment DM+A. A third group of rats received no strepto- zotocin or aucibin, and served as controls (CON). Encephalopathy was assessed using Y-maze be- havioral testing. Rats were euthanized on Day 87, and hippocampi were excised for visual (light and transmission electron microscopic) and immunochemical (Western blot; immunohistochemical) as- sessments of the CA1 subfield for apoptosis and expression of regulatory proteins Bcl-2 and Bax. Treatment responses to all the parameters examined (body weight, plasma glucose, Y-maze error rates, pyramidal cell ultrastructure, proportions of apoptotic cells, levels of expression of Bcl-2 and Bax, and survivability of neuronal cells) were identical: there were highly significant differences between DM and CON groups (P<0.001), but the effects were significantly moderated (P<0.01) in DM+A compared with DM. These findings confirm the association of apoptosis with the encephalopathic effects of diabetes mellitus, and suggest a major role of the expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax in the regulation of apop- totic cell death. All of the results suggest that aucubin could effectively inhibit apoptosis by modulating the expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax genes. | XUE HongYu1, JIN LiJi1,2, JIN Lei1, ZHANG Peng1, LI DanQing4, XIA YanQiu1, LU YaNan1 & XU YongPing1,3 1 Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 2 State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 3 Dalian SEM Bioengineer and Biotech Ltd., Dalian 116024, China 4 The Second Affiliated Hospital, Dalian Medical University, Dalian 116024, China | 2008 | Science China(Life Sciences)2008,51,6: | 22
Relation of chaos activity characteristics of the cardiac system with the evolution of species显示文摘According to the nonlinear theory, the experiments have been conducted on sample ECG (electrocardiogram) signals of healthy human beings, coronary heart disease patients and adult canines. On the basis of the analyses of the power spectra, the computation of the correlation dimension and the Lyapunov exponent to a large number of ECG signals, the following conclusions are shown: through the comparative research, (1) the analyses of the power spectra, the computation of the correlation dimension and the Lyapunov exponent to the ECG signals reflect the whole dynamic characteristics of the hearts, and they may become a new method of researching ECG quantitatively to an early diagnose of heart disease. (2) Under normal physiological conditions the cardiac activities are chaotic, while under pathologic conditions the cardiac activities approach regularity. (3) On the basis of the comparative research of human beings and canines, it is revealed that chaos may be a quantitative index to measure the evolution | WANG XingyuanSchool of Electronic and Information Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China | 2002 | Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,24: | 21
Full-scale measurements of dynamic response of suspension bridge subjected to environmental loads using GPS technology显示文摘Nowadays, there are many larger and taller engineering structures than in the past. These structures are commonly designed to be more flexible. Thus, they are sensitive to severe wind gust and earthquake tremor. For the dynamic response prediction, finite element (FE) modal updating and structural health monitoring, the dynamic characteristics of a structure are becoming increasingly important. The aim of this paper is to show an emerging tool-the real time kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS), which is used to measure and monitor the low-frequency vibration of Dalian BeiDa Bridge, a medium span suspension bridge. The modal analysis is firstly performed on the developed three-dimensional FE model according to the original blue prints of the bridge to provide the analytical frequencies and mode shapes. The field ambient vibration tests using the accelerometers on the bridge deck are conducted just prior to the use of the GPS system in order to validate the FE model. And then, the calibration test is done to assess the dynamic displacement measurement accuracy of the GPS in three orthogonal directions. The GPS signal properties, such as the amplitude, standard deviations (STD), power spectral density (PSD), and probability density functions (PDF), are studied in details. After that, a structural health monitoring system based on the GPS is devised and installed on the bridge to provide real-time measurement of deck movement. The output-only modal parameter identification is carried out by using the Periodogram method to investigate the responses of the bridge. The result shows that the spectral densities of the displacements measured by the GPS correspond well with the results by the FEM analysis and the accelerometer vibration test. It is concluded that the GPS method is reliable and useful to clarify the ambient vibration response behaviors of the flexible structures. The integration of the GPS and accelerometer methods results in a hybrid arrangement that can help to eliminate some disadvantages of the two devices used separately. | YI TingHua1,2, LI HongNan1 & GU Ming2 1State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 2State Key Laboratory for Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,2: | 18
Numerical Wave Channel with Absorbing Wave-Maker显示文摘The numerical wave channel has been developed based on the volume of fluid method (VOF) in conjunction with the Navier-Stokes equations. The absorbing wave-maker boundary on the left side of the channel is presented by prescribing velocity reference to linear wave-maker theory. The principle of which is that the numerical wave-maker is designed to move in a way that generates the required incident wave and cancels out any reflected wave that reach it at the same time. On the right side of the channel, the open boundary is set to permit incident waves to be transmitted freely. The parametric studies have been carried out at a range of ratios of water depth to wave length d/ L from 0.124 to 0.219, with wave height in the front of paddle/water depth ratio (H0 / d) from 0.1 to 0.3. Wave height, wave pressure distribution along the channel and velocity field are obtained for both open boundary condition and reflective boundary condition at the other end of the channel. | 7 | Mechanism of calcium mitigating membrane fouling in submerged membrane bioreactors显示文摘Two parallel membrane bioreactors (MBRs) were operated under different calcium dosages (168.5, 27 mg/L) to gain a better understanding of the mechanism of retarding membrane fouling by adding calcium. The results showed that the particle size of sludge flocs increased and the particle size distribution tended to be narrow at the optimum dosage (168.5 mg/L). Calcium was effective in decreasing loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) in microbial flocs and soluble microbial products (SMP) in the supernatant at the dosage of 168.5 mg/L by strengthening the neutralization and bridging of EPS with flocs. Furthermore, the amount of CODS and CODC decreased in both the mixed liquor and the fouling cake layer on the membrane surface. In order to compare the filtration characteristics of cake layers from the MBRs with the two calcium dosages, the specific cake resistance and the compressibility coefficient were measured. The specific cake resistance from the MBR with optimum dosage (168.5 mg/L) was distinctly lower than that with low dosage (27 mg/L). The compressibility coefficient of the cake layers under two dosages were respectively attained as 0.65, 0.91. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and three-dimensional confocal scanning laser microscope analysis (CLSM) images were utilized to observe the gel layer directly. | ZHANG Hanmin, XIA Jie, YANG Yang, WANG Zixing, YANG FenglinKey Laboratory of Industrial Ecology and Environmental Engineering, MOE, School of Environmental and Biological Science and Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China. | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,8: | 15
Effects of Predeformation on the Reverse Martensitic Transformation of TiNi Shape Memory Alloy显示文摘DSC was used to study the effects of predeformation on the reverse martensitic transformation of near-equiatomic TiNi alloy. Both the start temperature A. and the finish temperature Af of the reverse transformation increased with increasing degree of predeformation, but the algebraic difference between A. and Af decreased with increasing predeformation until it reached a minimum value, then remained unchanged with further deformation. Transformation heat also increased with increasing predeformation until it reached a maximum value, then decreased with further predeformation. | 10 | Inter-basin water transfer-supply model and risk analysis with consideration of rainfall forecast information显示文摘This paper develops a new inter-basin water transfer-supply and risk assessment model with consideration of rainfall forecast information. Firstly, based on the current state of reservoir and rainfall forecast information from the global forecast system (GFS), the actual diversion amount can be determined according to the inter-basin water transfer rules with the decision tree method; secondly, the reservoir supply operation system is used to distribute water resource of the inter-basin water transfer reservoir; finally, the integrated risk assessment model is built by selecting the reliability of water transfer, the reliability (water shortage risk), the resiliency and the vulnerability of water supply as risk analysis indexes. The case study shows that the inter-basin water transfer-supply model with rainfall forecast information considered can reduce the comprehensive risk and improve the utilization efficiency of water resource, as compared with conventional and optimal water distribution models. | XI ShuFeng1, WANG BenDe1, LIANG GuoHua1, LI XueSen2 & LOU LiLi3 1 School of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China 2 Management Bureau of Tanghe Reservoir, Liaoyang 111000, China 3 Institute of Dalian Water Science, Dalian 116013, China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,12: | 12
An effective and practical method for solving an unnegligible problem inherent in the current calculation model for multi-support seismic analysis of structures显示文摘In the seismic analysis of extended structures subject to spatially varying motions, the displacement input model instead of acceleration model is usually adopted for accurate results. In this paper, a more detailed and comprehensive analysis of the displacement input model is carried out and the research shows that there exists an unnegligible problem in the current displacement model, which leads to the irrationality and unconvergence of some calculated results such as base shear etc. Based on the situation, an effective method named massless rigid element (MRE) method is presented to solve the problem. Moreover, the rationality and accuracy of the method are further assessed and the method is applied to a transmission tower-line system project using the commercially available structural analysis software SAP2000. The theoretical and numerical analyses indicate that the MRE approach is not only feasible with sufficient computational accuracy but also practical and can be easily implemented using the commercially available finite element software such as SAP2000. | LIU GuoHuan2, GUO Wei1 & LI HongNan2 1 National Engineering Laboratory for High Speed Railway Construction, School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Central South University, Changsha 410075, China 2 Faculty of Infrastructure Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,7: | 12

An adaptive version of ghost-cell immersed boundary method for incompressible flows with complex stationary and moving boundaries显示文摘An adaptive version of immersed boundary method for simulating flows with complex stationary and moving boundaries is presented. The method employs a ghost-cell methodology which allows for a sharp representation of the immersed boundary. To simplify the implementation of the methodology,a volume-of-fluid method is introduced to identify the immersed boundary. In addition, the domain is spatially discretized using a tree-based discretization which is relatively simple to implement a fully flexible adaptive refinement strategy. Finally, the methodology is validated by comparing it with numerical and experimental results on three cases:(1) the flow passing a circular cylinder at Re=40 and Re=100,(2) a periodic oscillation of a circular cylinder in fluid at rest and(3) the self-propelled fish-like swimming at Re=6400. | WANG Liang1 & WU ChuiJie2,3 1 School of Science,PLA University of Science and Technology,Nanjing 211101,China 2 State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 3 School of Aeronautics and Astronautics,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China | 2010 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2010,53,5: | 11
Thermoelastic properties of sandwich materials with pin-reinforced foam cores显示文摘Pin-reinforced foam is a novel type of sandwich core materials formed by inserting pins(trusses) into a foam matrix to create a truss-like network reinforced foam core.Upon loading, the pins deform predominantly by local stretching whilst the deformation of foam is governed by local bending. This paper presents a theoretical study on the thermoelasticity of pin-reinforced foam sandwich cores. To calculate the effective thermoelastic properties of pin-reinforced foam cores, the energy-based homogenization approach is employed to develop a micromechanics-based model, calibrated by the existing experimental data.It is found that the stiffness of the sandwich core is mainly governed by pin reinforcements:the foam matrix contributes little to sandwich stiffness.Compared with traditional foam cores without pin reinforcements, the changes in inplane thermal expansion coefficients are not vigorous as a result of pin reinforcements, while the through-thickness thermal expansion coefficient changes significantly. It is also demonstrated that it is possible to design materials with zero or negative thermal expansion coefficients under such a context. | LU TianJian1,LIU Tao2,3 & DENG ZiChen2,4 1 MOE Key Laboratory of Strength and Vibration,School of Aerospace,Xi’an Jiaotong University,Xi’an 710049,China 2 Department of Engineering Mechanics,Northwestern Polytechnical University,Xi’an 710072,China 3 Department of Engineering,University of Cambridge,Cambridge CB2 1PZ,UK 4 State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis of Industrial Equipment,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China | 2008 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,12: | 10

Risk analysis of flood control operation mode with forecast information based on a combination of risk sources显示文摘Risk analysis of reservoir flood control operation mode with forecast information (FCOMFI) is an important basis for the design and implementation of FCOMFI. Most of current researches on this issue are incomplete as they only consider flood forecast errors, but not many other uncertainties in reservoir routing. In order to obtain an integrated risk rate of FCOMFI, this paper analyzes four uncertainties, i.e. hydrological, hydraulic, stage-storage uncertainty and time-delay uncertainty, as well as their probability distributions. On the basis of this analysis, an integrated risk analysis model of FCOMFI for reservoirs and its lower reach is established involving the above-mentioned four uncertainties, and this model is solved by Monte Carlo simulation based on Latin hypercube sampling. The simulation results, with Baiguishan reservoir as the example, show that the integrated risk rates of FCOMFI are less than those of the flood control operation mode without forecast information. | 17 | Analytical theory of flexural behavior of concrete beam reinforced with textile-combined steel显示文摘Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is a new high performance cementitious composite material, which not only has superior corrosion resistance but also can effectively limit the development of concrete cracks and make the crack width and spacing of concrete become smaller. However, due to the brittle feature of fiber materials, the TRC structural member has no distinct failure symptom when it arrives at its ultimate load.At the same time, ordinary reinforced concrete (RC) elements have large dead weight and can not efficiently restrict the expansion of the main crack of structures because of the restriction of their special cover thickness. In order to overcome the disadvantages of both the TRC and the RC,a new architecture reinforced with textile-combined steel is proposed in this study, making full use of the advantages of the above two structures. The cover concrete at the tension zone of an RC element is partially replaced with TRC and thus the steel reinforcements replaced with textiles are subtracted.Compared with the old one,the new structure has less dead weight and has the merits of service safety and good durability. The flexural development process of the proper beam with this new structure is investigated in this paper and based on the plane section assumption, analytical equations are derived by using nonlinear analysis theory, including the load-carrying capacity at different stages and moment-curvature relationship and mid-span deflection during the entire loading process.Comparison between the calculated and the experimental results reveals satisfactory agreement and thus verifies the feasibility of the equations. | XU ShiLang & YIN ShiPing Department of Civil Engineering,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,6: | 10
Microwave thermal remediation of crude oil contaminated soil enhanced by carbon fiber显示文摘Thermal remediation of the soil contaminated with crude oil using microwave heating enhanced by carbon fiber(CF) was explored. The contaminated soil was treated with 2.45 GHz microwave, and CF was added to improve the conversion of microwave energy into thermal energy to heat the soil.During microwave heating, the oil contaminant was removed from the soil matrix and recovered by a condensation system of ice-salt bath. The experimental results indicated that CF could effciently enhance the microwave heating of soil even with relatively low-dose.With 0.1 wt.%CF,the soil could be heated to approximately 700°C within 4 min using 800 W of microwave irradiation.Correspondingly, the contaminated soil could be highly cleaned up in a short time.Investigation of oil recovery showed that, during the remediation process, oil contaminant in the soil could be effciently recovered without causing significant secondary pollution. | LI Dawei,ZHANG Yaobin,QUAN Xie,ZHAO Yazhi Key Laboratory of Industrial Ecology and Environmental Engineering,Ministry of Education of China,School of Environmental and Biological Science and Technology,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,9: | 9
